From Where I Sit:
Musings from Rev. Cindy Garis
This year, we celebrate 25 years of Oasis Ministries. What began as a prayer over a lunch conversation has spread over
the years and miles into excellent training programs and a nurturing community.
One of our Board members shared that, after looking at our website, a consultant commented, “Religion is a mile wide but an inch deep. But Oasis' says, come and grow deeper into God. Come. Stop. And in the stillness hear God's voice. Come grow deeper." He went on to share that Oasis helps people connect in a world that is increasingly disconnected. They are lonely in their homes, lonely in the church pews, and lonely at their work. The Board member reflected, “Longing to connect is what brought me to Oasis.”
Our theme for this past year was “Cultivating Connections.” Hopefully, we have begun to foster growth and build connections with you and your communities. This year, as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary we want to “Strengthen Connections.”
One of the ways we are proposing to do this is through “grace, gratitude and generosity,” the theme words for our 25th anniversary. For me, it begs the questions, “How do we embody generosity as an organization?” “How might we nurture gratitude in our communities?” And, “where do I experience grace as the foundation for growth?”
Where is God inviting you to reach beyond the loneliness and strengthen grace, gratitude and generous connections?
To assist you, within these pages, and on our website, you will find six year-long programs, days of retreat, and spiritual pilgrimages. Connect and be blessed and renewed on the journey! Peace,
P.S. Friends, as we celebrate our 25th anniversary, I say, “THANK YOU!” from the bottom of my heart, for I know that this has not been the sole effort of one or two people...it has been by the grace of God, a team of people and a community connected. Please continue to hold us in prayer and share the good news. Thank you for your continued support. May you be richly blessed.
PAUSING OVER LUNCH
Lunching at Penn State’s
Hershey Medical Center in 1988,
two forties ministers shared
their disappointments and their
dreams—small drops of hope in
desert time.
One said he hoped
to find a way to join the active
and contemplative life, a way
of living free while loving God.
“How would you find such a way,”
the other asked.
“Oh, it could
never be alone, only in community.”
“And where would you find such
a community?”
“Ah, most likely
it would not mean finding—rather
founding such a fluid group
as would enrich all communities.”
“And what would you call it?”
“Oasis!” the answer flowed
without a pause. Then, in holy
awe, both paused…
and have
been pausing ever since…
between their words…
and deeds.

Spiritual Direction for
Spiritual Guides Expanding Attention and Intention
This two-year training program in spiritual direction begins with an opening two-day retreat in October and concludes with a two-day retreat in May, with monthly day-long sessions each month in between. Since 1990, Oasis has been teaching people the art of spiritual direction. SDSG is especially suited to those who are seeking to deepen their practice of prayer and learn about being a spiritual companion to others. Through experiencing and practicing the disciplines of contemplative prayer, participants discover the richness of community, the intimacy of small groups, and the depth of spiritual direction.

Men4Directions
Men4Directions is a renewable year-long program of Oasis Ministries intended to help men grow in faith, self-awareness, and spiritual wholeness. The program includes small group community, quarterly retreats, and solo-time in the wilderness to engage with Spirit and Soul.
♦ Quarterly retreats
♦ Small group community
♦ Solitude in nature
♦ One-on-one spiritual direction
♦ Readings and reflections
♦ A contemporary vision quest
Why Men? We can all use help finding our way from time to time—men are no different. Men need the support of one another to be honest and real about life. Through small group discussions, monthly consultation with a "spiritual brother", and contemplative practice, men are encouraged to know themselves, listen to the still small voice within, and to honor their souls. The result could change lives and lead to a whole new world. Retreat Dates (intentionally coincide with Spirit & Seeds): August 15-17, 2013 November 1-2, 2013 February 21-22, 2014 May 2-5, 2014 Location: Krislund Camp & Conference Center (www.krislund.org) 189 Krislund Drive Madisonburg, PA 16852

"I am relatively new to men’s spirituality but was looking for a new direction in my spiritual life. My participation in M4D deepened and challenged me in ways that I am still exploring. The readings, poetry and journaling were all very helpful. But it was the community that was most helpful. Knowing that there were others who were both counting on me and praying for me was a support and helped me through the dry times in my spiritual life. Joel Blunk has been invaluable in his leadership. His ability to work with the Holy Spirit to touch the Christ in each of us has been such a blessing. I cannot remember ever being moved by the Spirit as deeply and frequently as I have through my participation in M4D. It is hard to state in words my full gratitude." ~ Rob Huffard
Uniquely for women...in partnership with the Wheelhouse Page 7
Spirit & Seeds: A Women's Pilgrimage through the Seasons Spirit and Seeds is a program for women of all ages and stages. It is a time of learning about and practicing how to best tend to the unique Spirit-given seeds in each of us. We come together in each season of the year to be attentive to God in the cycles of nature and in the cycles of our lives. As a community of women on a pilgrimage, we will spend time with the practices of gratitude, community, solitude and service.
Spirit and Seeds is for all women who are interested in watering and nurturing their Spirit-given seed that they can go "into the world, alive, offering their best."
The intent of Spirit and Seeds is to provide experiences for women to learn, experience and grow. We will learn about: the feminine side of God; our bodies as temples of God; and nature as word of God. We will experience ways to: connect with God; connect with our unique voices and gifts; and to connect with each other. We will grow in: our relationship with God; our understanding of our Spirit-given seeds and gifts; our community of support; and our commitment to continue to live from Spirit. Leadership: Jackie Naginey Hook and Kim Hunsiker, both offer leadership through the Wheelhouse, a ministry of State College Presbyterian Church. Please visit the website listed below for more details, including quarterly themes, leader bios, and to download a brochure. Questions for the leaders? This series of quiet retreat days is designed to offer support and community for your contemplative journey. Participants are invited to share their stories here, and are asked to bring their whole selves and an earnest desire for transformation to the group. Together we will step aside from our inner and outer chaos and make a clearing for God. Although the suggested readings are an important component of the program, keeping a mindful attitude between our monthly gatherings, and developing personal prayer practices will bring a greater richness to our sessions in community.

The evening before our third
retreat day of Journey Into
Silence, I told my husband that,
as a mother of four young
children, each retreat feels about
like one of those tiny paper cups
of water that people hand out
along the sides of a marathon. It
doesn't seem like much in the
face of the work and "race" of
living that exists between each pit
stop, but it's something and I'm
grateful for it. Sometimes I gulp
it down and other times I simply
enjoy the refreshing feeling of
spilling it on myself, either way it
is SOMETHING to keep me going
for the next leg of the journey.
Maybe a time will come when I
can sit and linger by cool
streams, but for now I'm grateful
for each and every sip.

Why support Oasis Ministries? Jeremy Bond sends Oasis checks from California a couple of times a year. We asked him to share why he gives when he is “not in the area.” This is Jeremy’s response:
Oasis and Me I don’t exactly remember how I learned of Oasis Ministries in the mid 1990’s, but I think I learned of it from a chance meeting with Kent Groff. At that time I served as Rector of St. Matthew Episcopal Church in Sunbury, PA and as Vicar of St. Mark Episcopal Church in next door Northumberland.
In those years I unexpectedly found myself sought out by several lay people as their spiritual director. This new experience opened me up to new learning. While I had worked with spiritual directors over the years on my own journey, I had not switched roles. Oasis looked like a good place to train and improve my abilities.
The couple of years I spent with the program proved very helpful. I enjoyed the variety of people with whom I studied, the suggested reading materials and the talented leaders. I finished in the spring of 1998 and continued to do spiritual direction with several learners until my retirement on August 1, 2003. When we moved from Pennsylvania to California in June of 2004 I left behind that aspect of ministry. But, I will always support Oasis. The Reverend Canon Jeremy Bond

“The journey is essential to the dream.”
– St. Francis of Assisi
Play and pray in this Quiet Day as we use our brains, hearts, courage, and sense of home to draw closer to God. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is our leaping off point, but the day will consist of listening deeply to how deeply we are connected - within ourselves, and in the community. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, we are reminded that this birth is an incarnational act; it is celebrating ‘God with skin on.’ Come apart for this quiet retreat where we will learn and experience how our prayers are active and incarnational. The focus of the retreat is on prayer; however, we will be drawing on themes from The Wizard of Oz to help us move through the day. Specific sessions include: +“ARE YOU A GOOD WITCH OR A BAD WITCH?” OR "PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN" – PRAYING OUR IDENTITY +“LIONS, TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY” – PRAYING OUR OBSTACLES AND FEARS +“FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD” – PRAYERS OF DIRECTION AND DISCERNMENT Join us as we pray and play together with activities and sessions that will offer you invitations for the day as well as elements and tools to take home. Jesus spoke, “Forgive them, they know not what they do.” Did he ask
his Father to forgive because he couldn’t? Is he asking God to forgive
us?... What did we do? During this retreat day, participants will have
time for personal reflection and small group sharing where we will look
at how we pray our guilt, grief and forgiveness. We will experience
movement on a path towards wholeness and healing where resistance,
relinquishment, and receiving are all necessary parts of the journey.

“Oasis has been just
that—a monthly
opportunity to drink
from the well.
Spiritually refreshed,
we go back to our lives,
taking its essence with
us.”
