As part of its Wild WestCollection airing throughoutJanuary, American Experiencepremiers “Billy the Kid,” thestory of the orphan teen who be-came the most wanted man inthe West. On April 28th, 1881, 21-year-old Henry McCarty, aliasBilly the Kid, just days from be-ing hanged for murder, out-foxed his jailors and electrifiedthe nation with the latest in along line of daring escapes. Just
a few weeks later, the notorious young outlaw was gunned downby the ambitious sheriff Pat Garrett. Demonized by the lawmanwho killed him, the Kid was soon mythologized by a never-end-ing stream of dime-store romances and later, big-screen dramas. But in all the narratives, Billy the Kid’s real story has been obscured.
Born to impoverished Irish immigrants, the Kid led ahardscrabble, itinerant life that became harder still when hismother died of tuberculosis. He came of age in a lawless cor-ner of New Mexico, where an Irish immigrant ring held a vise-like grip on all money-making endeavors and the Mexican popu-lation was frequently cheated out of their property without re-course to the courts.
Caught in the middle of a many-centuries-old Irish-Englishconflict playing out on the plains of the Southwest, the Kid cap-tured national attention with his reckless violence. His fascina-tion with Mexican culture, his flair for Spanish, and his disdainfor the Anglo authorities made him a hero of sorts to the His-panic community, who hid him when the law came looking andmourned him when he was gone.
“Billy the Kid” on American Experience airs Tuesday, January10th at 8:00 p.m. It repeats Monday, January 16th at 9:00 p.m.
The Wild West Collection onAmerican Experience includes“Custer’s Last Stand,” the finalact of General George Custer’slarger-than-life career played outon a grand stage with a spell-bound public engrossed in thedrama.
On June 26th, 1876, near theLittle Bighorn River in MontanaTerritory, General GeorgeArmstrong Custer ordered hissoldiers to drive back a largearmy of Lakota and Cheyennewarriors. The battle pitted twolarger-than-life antagonistsagainst one another: Sitting Bull, the charismatic and politically savvy leader of the Plains Indians, andCuster, one of the Union’s greatest cavalry officers and a man with areputation for fearless and often reckless courage.
By day’s end, Custer and nearly a third of his army were dead. Thisbiography of one of the most charismatic and contradictory Americanleaders of the 19th century takes viewers on a journey from Custer’smemorable charge at Gettysburg, which turned the tide of the battle,to his lonely, untimely death on the windswept plains of the West.Along the way, viewers learn how, time and time again, the supremelyambitious son of a blacksmith ricocheted from triumph to disaster, frombattlefield heroism to impetuous escapade.
In the end, Custer’s reputation was saved by the wife he adored, whoalmost single-handedly turned the Battle of the Little Bighorn into oneof the most iconic events in American history and mythologizedCuster’s role, turning it into a tale of heroic sacrifice against all costsin the service of a country with only the most noble of motives.
“Custer’s Last Stand” on American Experience can be seen Tuesday,January 17th at 7:00 p.m. It repeats Sunday, January 22nd at 9:00 p.m.
The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz is the amazingstory of how an intrepid American adventurer and abrilliant self-taught Mexican artist transformed a dy-ing desert village into a home for world-class ceramics.
When anthropologist Spencer MacCallum walkedinto a second-hand store in Deming, New Mexico, in1976 and bought three pieces of pottery, he had no ideathat he was about to embark on a journey that wouldlead to the revival of an ancient art form.
Finding his way to Mata Ortiz, México, MacCallumpartnered with self-taught artist Juan Quezada andslowly they created an industry that today is known

world-wide for its interpretations of a centuries-oldstyle of ceramics and for stunning post-modern worksas well. Not only did MacCallum help Quezada creategreat art, but Mata Ortiz, population 2500, now has 400working potters. The economic development that has oc-curred in the village has allowed parents to climb out ofpoverty and send their children to school instead of work.
The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz tells the improb-able story of how Quezada (without a kiln or a potter’swheel and using only found materials) and MacCallumboth experienced creative and personal breakthroughswhich led to dazzling, innovating works by Quezadaand a passing of the torch to younger, award-winningartists, such as Diego Valles.
The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz airs Sunday, Janu-ary 1st at 10:00 a.m. and Monday, January 23rd at 9:00 p.m.

In 1943 a squadron of Lancaster bombers staged one ofthe most audacious raids in history—destroying two gigan-tic dams in Germany’s industrial heartland and cutting thewater supply to arms factories—with a revolutionary bounc-ing bomb invented by British engineer Barnes Wallis.
Wallis and the pilots of 617 Squadron—a lively mix ofBritons, Australians, Americans, and Canadians—werehailed as heroes and dealt a mighty blow to the German warmachine.
In “Bombing Hitler’s Dams,” a two-hour episode, Novarecreates the extreme engineering challenges faced by Wallisand the pilots with the aid of six spectacular experiments. Acrack team of experts including dam engineers, explosivesspecialists, mechanics, and aircrew step into the shoes of theDambusters and attempt to overcome each obstacle in turn.
“Bombing Hitler’s Dams” on Nova will be broadcastWednesday, January 11th at 8:00 p.m. The program repeatsSaturday, January 14th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, January15th at 12:00 midnight.
Deadliest Volcanoes
During World War II, Hitler’s scientists developed terrifying newweapons of mass destruction. Alarmed by rumors about advanced rock-ets and missiles, Allied intelligence recruited a team of brilliant minds fromBritish universities and Hollywood studios to a country house near Lon-don. Here, they secretly pored over millions of air photos shot at great riskover German territory by specially converted, high-flying Spitfires.
Peering at the photos through 3D stereoscopes, the team spotted tell-tale clues that revealed hidden Nazi rocket bases. The photos led to dev-astating Allied bombing raids that were crucial setbacks to the Germanrocket program and helped ensure the success of the D-Day landings.
With 3D graphics that recreate exactly what the photo spies saw,Nova’s “3D Spies of WWII” tells the suspenseful, previously untold storyof air photo intelligence that played a vital role in defeating Hitler.
“3D Spies of WWII” on Nova can be seen Wednesday, January 18that 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 21st at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, January22nd at 12:00 midnight.
In October 2009, a striking portrait of a young woman in Renaissancedress made world news headlines. Originally sold two years before foraround $20,000, the portrait is now thought to be an undiscovered mas-terwork by Leonardo da Vinci worth more than $100 million. How didcutting edge imaging analysis help tie the portrait to Leonardo?
In “Mystery of a Masterpiece,” Nova introduces a new breed of expertswho are approaching “cold case” art mysteries as if they were crime scenes, determined to discover “who committed the art,” and follows art sleuthsas they deploy new techniques to combat the multi-billion dollar crimi-nal market in stolen and fraudulent art.
“Mystery of a Masterpiece” on Nova can be seen Wednesday, Janu-ary 25th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday,January 29th at 12:00 midnight.
Are scientists getting close to predicting volcanic erup-tions, potentially saving thousands of lives? On the frontlines of volcano research, scientists use new tools and tech-niques that are starting to reveal what makes a volcano tick.In “Deadliest Volcanoes,” Nova travels with scientists whoare attempting to discover how likely volcanoes are toerupt, when eruptions might happen, and how deadly theycould prove to be.
Millions of people around the world live in the shadow ofactive volcanoes. Under constant threat of massive volcaniceruptions, their homes and their lives are daily at risk fromthese sleeping giants. From Japan’s Mount Fuji to the “Sleep-ing Giant” submerged beneath Naples to the Yellowstone“supervolcano” in the United States, scientists from aroundthe world reveal the spectacular danger posed by the world’sdeadliest volcanoes.
“Deadliest Volcanoes” on Nova airs Wednesday, January4th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 7th at 10:00 p.m., andSunday, January 8th at 12:00 midnight.

Martin Luther, a two-part series, re-counts how Luther’s attack on the all-pow-erful Catholic Church was a knife to theheart of an empire that had endured for morethan a thousand years. Nailing his treatise tothe doors of Wittenberg Cathedral, this pre-viously obscure German monk changed theworld forever, unleashing forces thatplunged Europe into war and chaos.
In 1483, Martin Luther is born into aworld dominated by the Catholic Church. After entering the monastery, Luther be-comes increasingly doubtful that the churchcan actually offer him salvation. His viewscrystallize further when he travels to Romeand finds the capital of Catholicismswamped in corruption. Wracked by de-spair, Luther finds release in the pages of theBible, discovering that his own individualfaith will guarantee his salvation. In his fa-mous 95 Theses, he attacks the practice ofselling Indulgences, putting himself on an ir-reversible path to conflict with the mostpowerful institution of the day.
In part two, the Catholic Church uses allof its might to try to silence Luther. Pro-tected by his local ruler, Frederick the Wise,

One of the most phenomenally popularseries in Masterpiece history is back for anexciting new second season: “DowntonAbbey II” resumes its story of love and in-trigue at an English country estate, now mo-bilized for the trauma of war. With a return-ing cast that includes Dame Maggie Smith,Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville,Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, SiobhanFinneran, and many more, the new dramaunfolds over seven weeks on MasterpieceClassic.
Last season opened with the sinking ofthe Titanic in 1912, which had dire conse-quences for Downton Abbey. The new sea-son picks up in the middle of another disas-ter, World War I, which affected every as-pect of life in England, accelerating the so-cial change that was already transforming anage-old system of class and privilege.
The second season promises to be as sat-isfying as the first, with thwarted and re-kindled romances, forgotten and fresh scan-dals, and enough new plot twists to weave atapestry with Lord Grantham’s family crest.
“Downton Abbey II” on MasterpieceClassic can be seen Sundays at 8:00 p.m.beginning January 8th. The series repeats Fri-day nights at various times (check A to Z).

Luther continues to write radical critiques ofthe church. In the process, he develops anew system of faith that places the freedomof the individual believer above the ritualsof the church. Aided by the newly inventedprinting press, his ideas spread rapidly.Risking torture and execution, Luther pro-claims his inalienable right to believe whathe wishes. His stand inspires revolutionacross Europe, overturning the thousand-year-old hegemony of the church.
Filmed across Europe—from rustic ruralGermany to the opulence of Vatican City—Martin Luther is the dramatic story of thecollapse of the medieval world and the birthof the modern age. Liam Neeson narrates.
Martin Luther will be broadcast Mon-day, January 2nd at 9:00 p.m. (Pt. 1) andMonday, January 9th at 9:00 p.m. (Pt. 2).The series repeats Sundays at 10:00 a.m.beginning January 8th.

Both Dish Network and DirecTV Satellite services are now carrying KENW-TV in theAlbuquerque-Santa Fe Designated Market Area (DMA). This DMA includes all countiesin New Mexico except Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, Union, and Dona Ana. DirecTV is carryingthe KENW-TV High Definitions Channel (HD 3-1) on its HD channel 3 and the KENW-TV Standard Definition (SD 3-2) on channel 3. Dish Network is carrying the KENW-TVSD signal on its channel 3.
The Nielsen Company decides which counties go into the various DMAs. At the presenttime, there are 210 DMAs in the United States. In population size, the Albuquerque-SantaFe DMA is the 45th largest in the U.S. because it takes in most of the State of New Mexico.Nielsen determines the counties in a DMA by which television stations the viewers in thatcounty are watching.
By Nielsen rules, DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers in Union, Quay, Curry, andRoosevelt counties will receive the Amarillo PBS station. In all other counties of NewMexico, except for Dona Ana, subscribers will receive PBS from KENW-TV (Portales)and KNME-TV (Albuquerque). Dona Ana is in the El Paso DMA, and those subscriberswill receive PBS from KRWG-TV (Las Cruces) and KCOS-TV (El Paso).
