WelcomeDear Friends,

The new year is off to a great start for the MJCC! Our membership is higher than anticipated, and we are delighted that you are a part of our growing community. Our priority is outstanding service to you in all of the programs and services that we offer, and we are excited at the growth that we have seen, not only in our numbers, but in our offerings.

If you haven’t yet done so, try out a class in our newly refurbished Studio II. The flooding in December provided the perfect opportunity to upgrade the space. The studio now has a new sub-floor, high-tech flooring, and a bright, fresh paint job. We are grateful to our members for their patience and flexibility during the time that Studio II was unavailable. We think our new space was worth the wait and hope you agree! For our racquetball enthusiasts, the repairs to Courts 1 and 2, the last of our major flood-related repairs, should be completed soon.

Our new fitness offerings are proving to be very popular. These include two new Les Mills classes, CXWORXTM and BODYATTACKTM, which are guaranteed to enhance your level of fitness. They aren’t as scary as they sound, and those in the classes represent a broad range of individuals. We’re also extremely excited to launch a brand new program this quarter, entitled “Heart to Start Rx.” Offered in conjunction with physicians and staff members at Providence’s Heart and Vascular Institute, this eight-week program is designed to foster heart health for individuals seeking both preventive and rehabilitative services. The program offers a combination of classroom sessions and fitness training, developed

by cardiologist Dr. James Beckerman and his team, and it utilizes trainers and instructors from our staff and from Providence. You can find further details on page 20.

Finally, we are delighted with the continued expansion of our educational, cultural, arts and social offerings. We’re excited about a variety of new on-campus offerings. In March, our Jewish authors series will feature three engaging writers, each of whom will talk about their newest works. Thanks to the Jewish Book Council for their assistance in bringing these authors to the MJCC. Our off-campus “J Without Walls” offerings are expanding as well, with Shabbat-in-a-Box gatherings planned on the East Side for young adults and our new monthly Dance Davenning program, offered on the East Side at TaborSpace in collaboration with the UnShul.

The critical ingredient to the success of every one of these programs is you, of course. We hope you’ll explore our new offerings, both on campus and off, and give us your feedback!

Warm regards,

Steve AlbertExecutive Director

Swim LessonsSwim Assessment (ages 13 and under)The MJCC aquatics department is dedicated to teaching children to swim and stay safe in our pools. We have an outstanding aquatic facility that allows kids to enjoy the water safely under the close supervision of certified lifeguards. We require a swim assessment for each child under the age of 13. The swim assessment consists of swimming the length of the pool with arm strokes, climbing out, jumping back in, and swimming backstroke the length of the pool. Please contact our aquatics department for any questions regarding swim assessments. Children who are unable to pass the swim assessment, will be required to wear a life jacket.

Although the MJCC offers class levels such as Angelfish and Blowfish together, we teach to each child’s ability. (See page 7 for swim lesson levels.) On occasion, we split or combine the classes based on skill level.

Note: swim diapers required for children not yet potty trained.

Swim Lessons Auto-Enroll Swim lesson registration is easier and more convenient than ever! Enroll in the program and your child will be automatically enrolled through the spring. There is no auto-enroll in the summer.

• Once you register for the first time, you never have to re-register for as long as your child remains enrolled.

• Once you enroll and choose a method of payment, fees are automatically charged two weeks prior to the start of a new session.

• As long as a student remains enrolled in a level, they keep their day and lesson time until they move to the next level.

• Be sure to check the auto-enroll box on your next activity registration form.

Annual FundMJCC is a nonprofit organization that exists and thrives due to the generous support of the community. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations to provide the remainder. Contributions support additional programming in all areas: fitness; aquatics; sports and recreation; cultural arts; educational offerings; and family, teen, and young adult programs – as well as scholarships for memberships and day camp. We are committed to ensuring that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay.

Each year, we have two fundraisers to raise the funds needed to ensure that we can offer a full range of high quality programs to the community. The first is our Friends of the Center Brunch. This year, the brunch took place on February 21, and it featured best-selling author, journalist, and columnist, A.J. Jacobs. We are extremely grateful to everyone who attended the event. If you were unable to join us, you can also make a Mitzvah Moment pledge on-line. The second is our annual campaign. This launched during the month of December and continues through our fiscal year, which ends on June 30. If you have not yet made a contribution, we urge you to consider a gift to the MJCC during our annual campaign. All gifts, of any size, matter greatly, and our ability to secure grants depends, in part, on the community’s level of participation in our annual campaign.

Think about what the J means to you. We bring the community together and have an impact on people’s lives through a range of programs found nowhere else in Oregon.

Thank you for supporting the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.
