At year-end, I need to bid you aloha a hui hou. And this time my familiar farewell won’t mean a short-term parting.

This lifelong Islander is leaving Hawai‘i in the New Year for San Antonio, Texas, to spend time with a family member facing a health challenge.

Resigning from PBS Hawai‘i at this time wasn’t in my playbook, but life happens. After struggling with the idea of relocating, I soon realized what a gift and a blessing it is, to be there for my loved one. I’m preparing to stay a year or more, while hanging onto my home in Honolulu.

I’ll very much miss Hawai‘i nei and the caring, creative, capable individuals who govern, staff, volunteer and otherwise contribute to this public media organization, including many active viewers who question, engage and support. It’s amazing how close I feel to many viewers

and other stakeholders, even those I haven’t met in person but with whom I’ve communicated by phone, email or postal mail for years.

PBS Hawai‘i Board of Directors Chair Joanne Lo Grimes and Vice Chair Jason Haruki are leading a committee search for my successor. I hope and expect to be cheering station developments from 3,700 miles away.

My nearly 14 years in leadership at PBS Hawai‘i have seen sweeping changes, especially in technology, as we evolved from a one-way legacy broadcaster to an interactive multimedia, multi-channel enterprise with a robust local presence – including youth, with the guidance of their teachers, in HIKI NŌ: Hawai‘i’s New Wave of Storytellers.

Tumultuous times include the Great Recession; the loss of a longtime lease and the need to find a new home; fundraising to

buy land and build our current $30 million debt-free facility; the changing economy that collapsed Hawai‘i’s middle class; and of course, the still-unfolding pandemic.

Through it all, Islanders have appeared on PBS Hawai‘i, sharing ideas, differences, wisdom, vulnerabilities and strengths.

Over the years, I’ve seen changes not only in technology but in people. One of the most concerning to me, as a longtime journalist and as a citizen, is the increasing unwillingness or inability to agree on facts. Sometimes individuals don’t even see the need for facts, only feelings. And what does it mean that we have advocates who truly can’t see what the other sees? Their realities are that different.

Convening diverse voices is PBS Hawai‘i’s specialty, in the form of INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I, KĀKOU - Hawai‘i’s Town Hall and What’s it Going to Take? Putting together these live programs is a job that’s becoming simultaneously more difficult and more important.

As always, PBS Hawai‘i stands for convening diverse voices, understanding differences and seeking common ground; fact-based journalism; and universal education.

Lea Salonga in ConcertFriday, November 27 at 8:00 pm

Internationally famous for her powerhouse voice and perfect pitch, Lea Salonga burst onto the Broadway musical scene with her 1991 Tony Award-winning performance as Kim in Miss Saigon. She was the first Asian woman to win a Tony, and in addition, has won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards. Salonga portrayed Éponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway, and returned to the beloved show as Fantine in the 2006 revival. She also played the leading role of Mei-li, a Chinese immigrant in a reinterpretation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song. Most recently, she starred as Erzulie in the Tony Award-winning revival of Once on This Island.

In collaboration with the Center for Asian American Media, Great Performances presents Salonga

recorded in peak performance with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House in November of 2019, singing selections from her Broadway career, as well as hits from the animated films Aladdin and Mulan.

WHEN THEIR PLAYING DAYS WERE OVERTuesday, November 24 at 7:30 pm

This month on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, we feature four athletes who found success in their sports – and beyond:

Known as the “Bull of Kalihi,” the late Skippa Diaz remains an icon at his alma mater Farrington High School, where he was an all-star lineman and later, a beloved teacher and head football coach. A tough guy with a soft heart, Diaz enjoyed teaching and recalled, “I’m walking downtown, somebody said ‘Coach, how you doing?’ And this kid I taught 30-something years ago, and they don’t forget you.”

Bob Apisa also was a sports star at Farrington. He was drafted into the NFL following back-to-back national titles as part of the Michigan State University football team, but suffered a career-ending injury before he had a chance to play professionally. A chance encounter led him to the film industry. “Well, I was comfortable with myself … I thought it was a new adventure,” said Apisa.

Mahina Eleneki Hugo was a celebrated member of the 1987 University of Hawai‘i Wahine Volleyball national championship team. Later employed at La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls, she rose to Head of School. She said sports and her education career weren’t so different: “You know, there’s challenges to be had, there’s discipline, there’s others to be considered on the team, but each person has to do their responsibility in order to make the organization work.”

And being the talk of the town as a Punahou School football star in the 1950s was only a prelude for Al Harrington. He graduated from Stanford University and went on to a hyphenated career as an educator, actor (64 episodes as Detective Ben Kokua in the original Hawaii Five-O TV series) and Waikīkī showroom headliner. He says, “Sometimes we try to make things happen, and we don’t follow the pattern that is destined for us to follow.”

They are social and political, form hierarchies and friendships and can be very mischievous. Get to know the many species of primates, from the familiar chimpanzee and gorilla, to the more obscure species like the slow loris and the tarsier, in this three-part miniseries. This comedy, set in 1960s England, features a Tony-winning performance by James Corden. Part history, part travelogue, part memoir, this documentary tells the story of Shohei Ogawa (pictured), a deceased Japanese soldier who is honored by an American, John Meixell, who finds him with his diary in a battlefield cave and seeks to return the chronicle to the man’s family. Decades later, Meixell’s son uncovers new information and retraces his father’s gesture and visits Japan to meet the Ogawa clan today.

Follow home renovation expert Jonathan Scott (pictured) on his mission to flip the switch on how Americans access power. Eliades Ochoa: From Cuba to the WorldSaturday, November 21 at 8:00 pm

Trace the life and career of the acclaimed Cuban guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa, who rose to worldwide fame in the late 1990s as a member of the internationally renowned Buena Vista Social Club. Through photographs, archival footage and interviews with family, friends and fellow musicians, the film paints an intimate portrait of this legendary musician.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on many nonprofits, Congress included changes to charitable deductions in its March 2020 Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). The Act allows taxpayers who itemize to make tax-deductible charitable contributions of up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash gifts. For taxpayers who do not itemize deductions, the Act allows for a $300 above the line charitable deduction.

Here are some tax-advantaged ways you can make a vital contribution to PBS Hawai‘i:

Appreciated SecuritiesTransferring appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual

funds to PBS Hawai‘i is a great way to make a

charitable gift and can benefit you in two ways. When you donate publicly traded investments that have been held for over a year, you may avoid capital gains taxes. Plus, you can take the full fair market value of the gift on the date it is transferred as a charitable deduction.

IRA Charitable RolloverIf you are 70 ½ years old or older, you can give up to

$100,000 from your IRA directly to PBS Hawai‘i without having to pay income taxes on the money. Since a gift from your IRA generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, you can benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
