0900 Connected Europe: Trends and Numbers

Parks Associates’ Vice President and Principal Analyst Kurt Scherf addresses global digital lifestyle trends – with a specific focus on Europe. Citing research from the new studies Customer Support in the Digital Home: Europe and Connected Home: Global Outlook, Kurt presents a primary perspective of the digital consumer, including adoption of connected products and services, usage, and interests.

Within this market, centralized connectivity is at the core of broadband service provider strategies. The presence of centralized and remotely managed customer premise equipment offers multiple benefits. Service providers gain operational efficiencies and enhanced customer support capabilities, and the consumer gets access to a host of new whole-home and multidevice features.

BENEFITS TO SERVICE PROVIDERSThe residential gateway contributes to the longer-term benefit of reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) among pay-television operators. They can manage their video services through the RG to mediate different content and rights management formats and distribute signals to lower-cost customer premise equipment or CE. The RG can also serve as an applications gateway, so operators can quickly and readily deploy value-added services and upgrades.

BENEFITS TO CONSUMERSConsumers benefit from a managed home network by receiving advanced services that allow distribution of content to a variety of devices – both fixed and mobile – over multiple access networks.

Early offerings that leverage the RG for multiplatform access are mainly technical support and lifestyle management services, including online backup and centralized management of antivirus and parental controls. The long-term benefits include near-limitless content options and home automation and health-related services.

For example, applications such as home control and health management will come later but gain prominence, particularly as telehealth, energy management, and security functions integrate functions that rely on the two-way capabilities of broadband communications.

RGs and home networking solutions create the possibility for future and more advanced value-added services. Consumers with these solutions are more receptive to additional VAS, and service providers will have the tools in place to meet this growing demand.

PANEL GUIDES0930 Defining the New Video Experience

Near- and long-term roadmap for television, video, and entertainment consumption from both CE and service perspectivesNew services as supplements to the core video experience Integrating mobile, online, and PC content into the three-screen ecosystem The emergence of 3D video and gaming solutions Cloud services to the set-top box Visual networking – bringing social networking to the TV

The roadmap of the rapidly changing video experience includes:

Long-term TransitionsHealth and wellness monitoring Home control and energy management Home monitoring and intercom

European consumers are accustomed to using the Internet as a source for video content, and with the number of advanced video devices in the home increasing, their expectations for video services are rising as well. Already, one-third of broadband households in the U.K. find widgets appealing.

In addition, consumers show a growing interest in media-sharing capabilities on their TVs (for example, the ability to view pictures from a photo-sharing site). These TV 2.0 applications could serve as the first generation of community and social networking applications and lead to the next stages in the evolution of video services. They could also help overcome the “free dilemma” in online video while also building the foundation for the long-term transitions, which will bring multiple service domains – health, home controls, monitoring – into the video experience.

PANEL GUIDES

1145 Evolution of the “Digital Furnace”: Residential Gateways and Set-top Boxes

The evolution of features that home hubs will support Support for features such as home monitoring, energy management, and health monitoring Network and hardware requirements for “future-proofed” home hubs The role of retail-purchased consumer electronics as compatible nodes

The market for set-top boxes (STBs) in Europe, particularly hybrid STBs, got a major boost from the transition to digital services. The STB is evolving into the primary point of entry for television services, including cable TV, DTH, and Telco/IPTV, but its role could easily go beyond video. Both the telcos and the cable operators are setting up their infrastructures to support sophisticated residential gateways (RGs), and the STB is a clear candidate for taking on many of the responsibilities currently assigned to the RG.

However, views within the industry are split on whether RG functions can be included in the set-top and vice versa. From Parks Associates’ view, a versatile gateway allows operators to enable multiple services without having to invest incremental CAPEX in additional devices. In addition, by retaining the RG within their domain, operators can manage the install and activation processes in a manner that minimizes later support costs.

As MSOs and telcos start to adopt an IP-based paradigm for video distribution, they will want to integrate multiple services into one device in order to control costs, have better management, and provide greater (and more walled-in) service options. The device in the home will take shape based on these needs.

PANEL GUIDES1430 Business Models for On-Demand Lifestyles

Monetizing online content The role of advertising and other revenue-generating programs Impact of new content protection technologiesUnderstanding the needs of content producers and owners Application stores, microtransactions, and the mobile provider

Internet Video and VoDIn terms of total users of online video services, Western Europe has an audience already 44% larger than in the U.S., and European consumers, particularly video users in Spain, are highly interested in content as long as it is free. The BBC iPlayer has become immensely popular (and is available to Virgin Media cable subscribers), and Yalp! is an effort by Telecom Italia that complements Alice IPTV service by providing additional programming to an online audience. In the U.S., Hulu, Comcast’s Fancast service, and the individual television broadcast networks offer similar features.

The challenge for over-the-top and traditional service providers is in generating premium or new revenues from these segments, and finding the answer to this question is critical in driving future market and subscriber growth.

Customer SupportCustomer support is one area where the challenges are formidable but have strong future potential. Carriers such as BT have shown initial promise, followed by lackluster results, with home support services with BT Home IT Advisor. While consumers are interested in receiving support services from providers, even on a paid basis, service providers continue to offer additional free services as competitive differentiators. Revenue opportunities will emerge as the services get more sophisticated.

PANEL GUIDES1600 Enabling Technologies: Connecting It All

Home networking architectures Device discovery software Media server solutions Conditional access and rights management User interfaces Software development and execution solutions Device and service management elements

There are two types of media use cases driving the digital/connected home concept – the Media Server Concept and the Cloud Media Concept.

The Media Server ConceptThe Media Server collects and shares content across devices in and outside of the home.

It can also perform content backup and security, and the device has the flexibility to accommodate different devices added now and in the future, including media-rendering devices such as cameras, camcorders, and MP3 players.

These devices can also reach out to pull in online video. The online video phenomenon has impacted consumer habits, particularly in Europe. Parks Associates’ research indicates that Western Europe actually has more active online video participants than the U.S. Much of the activity is peer-to-peer downloads from non-studio sanctioned Websites, but this activity establishes habits to influence future behavior, which could provide a boost for Cloud Media.

The Cloud Media Concept The Cloud Media Concept is based on cloud computing and virtualized services, which received press attention in October 2009 when a technical glitch caused widespread data loss for customers with T-Mobile’s Sidekick.

Still, this concept fits well with the increasingly mobile lifestyle of today’s consumers. Within the cloud media paradigm, devices receive premium services including entertainment, communications, and media from closed networks (cable, satellite, IPTV) and “over-the-top” services from the Internet.

Both U.S. and European consumers are interested in on-demand video, in the traditional sense and through online sources, which indicates, at least for the time being, the connected home will have a blend of these two concepts in its media habits, rather than having one concept over the other.

PANEL GUIDES1715 Wrapping it Up – Predictions for the Next Five Years

This panel addresses perspectives and predictions for five key digital lifestyles markets in Europe:

Broadcast and entertainment services Communications and broadband servicesHome networking Home monitoring and green-living technologiesDevice management and support services

The value of digital lifestyles solutions increases exponentially as the links among these individual spokes get connected.

Television and video services are enhanced by the introduction of home networks, which enable features like multiroom DVR, an application that resonates with consumers. Television service providers, in turn, benefit by integrating elements of digital media to provide more personalized content experiences and by having greater ability to target both content and advertisements to consumers.

Mobile communications are converging with other digital lifestyles elements both in the home (femtocells and unlicensed mobile access features) and within the access network (IMS). Telecom operators can ameliorate churn by keeping customers locked into a basic broadband service and build the foundation for future multiplatform value-added services focused on entertainment and communications features.

Digital media, gaming, and social networking will benefit from stronger links between end-user devices (the multiscreen approach) and from new business models, notably advertising. The former may be easier to accomplish than the latter, although there are questions as to which core technologies – from content creation to distribution to rendering – are critical. Furthermore, questions remain as to how effective advertising is within new media and which type of ad formats will produce greater revenue streams.

Home and health management are also getting more attention as wireless and powerline-based control systems are included in a growing number of products. As cultural shifts and government initiatives put more emphasis on improving energy and healthcare delivery and consumption, new opportunities will arise for technology companies developing energy management and digital health solutions.

Finally, the element of support wraps around all of the components within the digital lifestyles market – and provides a mechanism to ensure that all the spokes are operating and providing sufficient value to the end user. Improving call center operations will be a critical factor in allowing service providers to reduce operational expenditures and improve customer satisfaction, and these efforts will be the groundwork for future value-added services. For device makers under similar pressures to reduce incoming customer support call volumes, building in auto-configuration and troubleshooting tools to their connected products will be essential.
