DEAR FRIENDS,It has been an incredibly busy year at WXXI, and this month we are very excited to share with you one of our biggest new projects! Last May WXXI launched its first multi-media series, which followed world-renowned sculptor Albert Paley as he created 13 original pieces for installation on Park Avenue in New York City. The six-part web-only series shared the behind-the-scenes story. After the installation in mid-June, WXXI’s production team continued to shoot the sculptures and events surrounding the project, while capturing personal stories about the artist and his work from Paley himself, his wife Frances, his staff and community leaders. This month, witness the culmination of one of the most ambitious projects that any sculptor in the Fund for Park Avenue’s Temporary Public Art Collection has undertaken in Paley on Park Avenue: New York City, premiering Thursday, December 12 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV. The documentary, narrated by two-time Emmy Award winning journalist and photographer Jay Schadler, also airs on PBS stations across the country this winter.

This project is just one of the many things WXXI was able to bring our community—and communities across the country—this year thanks to support from members like you. Looking back at 2013, I hope you are as proud as I am of all that we have accomplished. This includes completing season 10 of our national health care series Second Opinion, taping several performances at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival to share with music lovers nationwide and generating a community discussion on race with the screenings of the PBS documentaries The March and Central Park Five at the Little Theatre and participation in the national RACE: Are We So Different exhibit. We also completed a successful Screen Saver Campaign for the Little Theatre to fund the purchase of digital projectors, new sound systems and other much-needed amenities. Our news department provided top-notch election coverage, including the hosting of a Democratic Primary Mayoral Debate. News reporter Hélène Biandudi Hofer reported live from South Sudan in a unique partnership between Rochester and the village of Mayen-Abun. Innovation Trail brought us extensive coverage on gun control, healthcare and the economy, while the newsroom and our Capitol News Bureau continued to provide in-depth coverage on local and state-wide issues that matter the most. Classical 91.5 filled our airwaves with beautiful music and special performances by the Gaudete Brass, the Ying Quartet, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Gateway Music Fest and many more. Our education department continued to provide resources and training to teachers, caregivers and parents in every district we serve.

As we look to 2014, we see a new year full of programs and events that promise to engage, enlighten and entertain our community. If you’d like to support our future endeavors, please make a year-end additional gift to help us ensure great things to come in the New Year and beyond. For more information on how to make a tax-deductible gift, please call our Membership Office at (585) 258-0200 or go to wxxi.org/support. On behalf of all of us at WXXI and The Little, we wish you and your family a joyful holiday season. Best regards,

FATHER BROWNSATURDAY, DECEMBER 28 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-Tv

Set in the 1950s in the heart of the beautiful English countryside, Mark Williams stars as Father Brown, the Catholic priest who also happens to have a particular talent for solving crimes, in this adaptation of GK Chesterton’s novels. Father Brown’s world is quintessentially English: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish churches. Many years spent hearing his parishioners’ confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Each episode sees the enigmatic priest investigate a crime in his own particular way. Full of humor and compassion, but with a big dramatic twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting while bringing a contemporary edge to the storytelling.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-Tv

Structured around three themes, Return to Downton explores “The Changing World of Downton Abbey,” “The Women of Downton Abbey” and “Love and Other Relationships at Downton Abbey.”

WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION MONDAY, DECEMBER 23 AT 8 PM

A holiday celebration on a spectacular scale — music, dance and renewal of spirit at the great turning point of the year. One of NPR’s most popular holiday specials returns with new talent and old friends. Malian singer Abdoulaye Diabate joins The Paul Winter Consort with Paul McCandless, the Drummers of The Force of Nature, Gospel vocalist Theresa Thomason, and the historic reassembly of the Paul Winter Sextet in the World’s Largest Gothic Cathedral — New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. WNYC’S John Schaefer hosts this NPR holiday broadcast favorite.

Winter Solstice Celebration is a contemporary take on ancient solstice rituals, when people came together during the longest night of the year to celebrate the return of the sun, as the Earth begins its rotational cycle back towards summer. Now in its 33rd year, the performance at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the world’s largest cathedral, is New York’s favorite holiday alternative to The Nutcracker and Radio City Christmas.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIvE IS BACK!Patrons, we heard your pleas, and we have answered! After repeated requests from many in the Little community, we have brought back an old favorite, National Theatre Live. This feature allows us to

screen live recordings of world-class theatre from London. In December, we’re proud to present two

screenings of Frankenstein, starring two dynamos of stage and screen, Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny

Lee Miller. On December 8 at 12:00 p.m., Cumberbatch plays the monster.

They swap roles on December 10 at 7:00 p.m., with Miller filling the monster’s

shoes. Spread the word, and come enjoy some big theatre in

your Little Theatre.

HIT PARADE OF NEW FILMSDecember is one of the Little’s biggest months of the year, with some of 2013’s best films on the bill. AmeRiCAN Hustle puts Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper together in a good ol’ FBI, Mafia, powerbroker con artist American mashup. iNsiDe llewYN DAvis is the latest masterpiece from the Coen brothers. In characteristic sardonic humor, it follows a folk singer as he struggles through 1961 Greenwich Village. August: OsAge COuNtY brings a star-studded cast, including the formidable Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ewan McGregor, under one roof to work out a family crisis.

Twenty-six years ago a small group of women organized sales of Fair Trade goods at local schools and churches. In 1987 the operation expanded to a storefront in Fairport. Seven years later One World Goods became a not-for-profit 501-C-3 Corporation in the State of New York with an all-volunteer Board of Directors. One World Goods gift store, now located in Pittsford Plaza, purchases goods from vendors who follow Fair Trade principles “The artisans who create products we feature receive a fair wage, work in a safe environment, and obtain financial and technical assistance,” explains store manager Robert Hazen. “The artisans are also encouraged to use environmentally sustainable production practices.” The end result is that One World Goods customers have the opportunity to purchase a quality product with the understanding that an equitable share of the purchase price went to the artisans who created the product. The decision for One World Goods to partner with WXXI was an opportunity to communicate to their customers in a noncommercial way. According to Hazen, “We feel our customers appreciate that we support public broadcasting through underwriting. We also believe WXXI’s audiences share the core set of values that drive Fair Trade.” One World Goods almost exclusively offers products from developing nations. Inventory changes regularly and frequently. A sample of items, including jewelry, clothing and accessories, home and garden, and collectibles are featured on their website: www.owgoods.org
