PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVESMLS program Goals:

· To provide students with an outstanding educational level according to national standards in medical laboratory sciences leading to a Bachelor’s degree.

· To equip the students with competencies required to work professionally in their career as medical laboratory specialist.

· To prepare students to adopt the professional code of ethics for practice in the healthcare environment

Major Objectives of the program:

PROGRAM GENERAL INFORMATION

· Program title and code:Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) / (FCMS-PL1)

· Total credit hours needed for completion of the program: 126 CH.

· Award granted on completion of the program : Post completion of the program requirements, the student is awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

· Major tracks/pathways or specializations within the program :None

· Professional occupations (licensed occupations, if any) for which graduates are prepared:On completion of the MLS program:

• Medical laboratory graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills that allow them to work as medical laboratory specialist. They are prepared to work in laboratory-based settings after earning the Saudi Commission for Health Specialist (SCHS) license. For instance, governmental hospitals, private hospitals, research centers and lab-instrument companies; in addition to the fertility centers and pharmaceutical companies.

• Our graduates will be generally skilled in completing all types of analysis required in the lab at different sections including: Microbiology, Blood Bank, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Serology as well as histopathology and cytology.

• Academic career is also such a golden opportunity for competent graduates who are able to express their skills in teaching and educating new juniors in colleges and universities.

General Competencies required for MLS graduates

Professional knowledge

· Describe the principles underlying all testing performed in the clinical laboratories, which include the pathological indications for conducting the required clinical test

· Interpret a wide array of the clinical output values and explain the normal and abnormal results

· Appraise any new technologies introduced in order to maximize their best practice according to current advances in the field

· Apply theoretical understanding of quality assurance effectively; including precision and accuracy, as well as running calibration procedures and QC checks in all sections of the laboratory

· Demonstrate continuing education as a function of growth and development to become professionally competent

Professional skills

· Demonstrate full compliance with the bylaws and regulations of the organization

· Demonstrate integrity, honesty and trustworthiness inside and outside the laboratory

· Capable to perform a wide range of clinical routine tests according to the highest standards applied in the field, including analytical tests on body fluids, and other specimens safely, with the ability to report and interpret the results

· Able to participate in the decision-making to introduce and implement new procedures including evaluation of the new instruments

· Able to correlate clinical laboratory outcomes with the differential diagnosis

This course focuses on the English language skills required for students with basic level of English. It integrates all four skills reading, writing, listening and speaking .It includes materials and activities required for proper teaching and learning of English language for this level.

• Course title and code: Chemistry for Health Sciences (CHEM 111)

B Objectives

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The course is designed to revises and consolidates the student’s knowledge of general chemistry.

Students learn the basic concepts of organic chemistry so that they can apply this basic knowledge to those chemically understood aspects of clinical sciences.

C Course Description

The course focuses on structure of atom and Chemical bonding and Equations also taking brief information for some of chemistry branches like Electrochemistry, Kinetics chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Organic chemistry is required for understanding biochemistry.

B Objectives

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The main objective of the course is to revise, consolidate and expand some of the basic rules, Operations and function in mathematics, thus enabling the student to cope with the courses. The statistics component in particular aims to help the students to draw the correct conclusions from scientific and medical data, which he will encounter during his clinical studies.

C Course Description

The course focuses on the essential basic mathematical requirements of science course taught in the pre-clinical year. Emphasis is placed on giving the students a board perspective of elementary mathematical terms and operation, on the basis that a sound knowledge of mathematics and its practical applications is critical for the student’s progress in the basic sciences and, later, in the clinical subjects.

B Objectives

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The course aims to interpret the overall scientific biological events including structure and functional components of generalized prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, basic chemical processes of life, the major structures of the digestive system, basic metabolic rate and type of dietary nutrition. It develops students’ ability to prepare, present and evaluate problem solving skill related to the biological science. The course revises and consolidates the student knowledge of biology covered by high school.

C Course Description

This course outlines some important principles underlying biological processes. It begins with a discussion of the properties of the living organisms which lead to cytological studies covering aspects of cell structure, cell membrane, and membrane transport processes followed by cell division including gametogenesis. Emphasis placed on the biological roles of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Also, digestion, absorption, the chemical nature of foods, assessment of nutritional status, introduction to human genetics, cellular respiration and other related topics. On completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels.

والتاءات، وأنواع األفعال، وأحوالها من حيث اإلعراب والبناء، وأنواع الخبر في الجملة

االسمية، ومعاني األفعال والحروف الناسخة.

وكذلك مساعدته على تحليل النصوص واألساليب تحليال نحويا، ولغويا، ودالليا،

والتمييز بين دالالت األلفاظ والتراكيب، والترادف والتضاد، وصيغ المفرد والمثنى

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

In addition, it provides the students with basics of nucleic acids metabolism. The course identifies the specific tissues in the body as well as the intracellular sites where the major metabolic pathways occur. 1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The main purpose of this course is to provide students with required knowledge and skills to define the science of microbiology and discusses its history. It also it prepares the students to deal with techniques and methods used to differentiate between the different microorganisms including the pathogenic and nonpathogenic forms. In addition to, identification of the cell structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cellular metabolism and methods of reproduction such as bacteria. Moreover, basic immunology, and epidemiology will be introduced in this course.

Also, the course incorporates a practical study unit to equip students with the required basic skills which covers some of the fundamental principles and techniques met in the lectures.

This course will focus on important basic topics which are preparatory to other courses in Medical laboratory technology and clinical curriculum, that include;

- Host-parasite relationships and the role of the opportunistic pathogens in humans

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The main purpose of this course is to provide student with required knowledge and skills required to deal with human bacterial infections and equips the students with the techniques and methods implemented clinically to identify and isolate the causative agent for a bacterial infection and provide the proper antibiotic treatment for such an infection.

C Course Description

This course tailored to deal with most of the bacterial diseases as related to body system. It includes the following;

• Advance study of host-parasite relationship

• Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and laboratory diagnosis of different bacterial infections of different body sites.

• It also includes the theoretical and practical aspects of antimicrobial agents, their modes of action, methods of evaluation and susceptibility testing and mechanisms of microbial resistance.

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The main purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge required to understand viral infections including structure, tropism, pathogenesis and mechanisms and most importantly diagnosis in the laboratory settings, including cell culture, serology and molecular techniques.

C Course Description

This course deals with the fundamental principles and detailed knowledge of medically important viruses and the interaction of these viruses with host cells during viral infection. Also, it emphasizes on viral infections and their relationship to disease in humans. General topics include virus structure, virus replication, virus pathogenesis, and cultivation of viruses, laboratory diagnosis of viruses, treatment and control of viruses. Viral laboratory diagnosis of pathogenic viruses includes preparation of the sample for viral testing, choice of the appropriate technique for diagnosis of viral infection. Laboratory techniques include antigen and antibodies detection, virus isolation and molecular techniques.

The course involves the basic principle of total quality management perspective for a laboratory testing service and application of quality assurance program in clinical laboratory. Quality control basics provide the essentials for performing statistical QC procedure in service laboratories. It covers the principles, terminology, and practices of common QC procedures, such as the Levey-Jennings control charts and the Westgard multirole technique.
