INSIDE THE SCORE BIOGRAPHIESCHARLEY SAMSON, host

In his multiple roles as program annotator, radio host and pre-concert lecturer, Charley Samson is a communicator about music. With characteristic dry humor, he revels in the human dimensions of the music. “After all,’’ he says, “statues didn’t write this music; human beings did.’’ He was on the music faculty at Metropolitan State College of Denver for 13 years. He has written program notes for the Colorado Symphony, the Young Artists Orchestra, the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, the Longmont Symphony, the Oakland-East Bay Symphony and others. He is

the host for the Arapahoe Philharmonic and the Denver Brass. After working for KADX, Samson joined KVOD in 1970. He stayed for 19 years. After a stint as music director, he was named program director in 1986. He now produces “Colorado Spotlight” programs at Colorado Public Radio. Since 1990 he has been the pronouncer at the Colorado State Spelling Bee finals. Samson attended Mullen High School in Denver, and later the University of Colorado at Boulder and at Denver, Regis College, the University of Denver, Metropolitan State College and the University of Northern Colorado. He received degrees from some of them.

POPS BIOGRAPHIESANDRES LOPERA, conductor

Colombian conductor Andres Lopera is one of the leading Latin-American artists in the United States with nearly a decade of engagements in both North and South America. A passionate conductor who believes in the transformational power of music, Lopera is now the Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Symphony having formerly led the Oregon Symphony, Toledo Symphony, New World Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, and Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared with professional and youth orchestras throughout Central and South America,

including Honduras, where he led the Youth Orchestra of the Americas in a musical camp for both young and professional musicians. In 2012, Lopera was appointed Music Director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, for which he oversaw 12 different orchestral ensembles with more than 450 students. Also an accomplished trombonist, Lopera’s musical development started with the Red de Bandas de Antioquia and Red de Escuelas de Musica de Medellin, both El Sistema like programs developed in Colombia. Lopera earned a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from New England Conservatory of Music and in Trombone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to these programs, he was awarded degrees in Conducting and Trombone from the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia. His principal teachers were Hugh Wolff and David Loebel, with additional studies with Ludovic Morlot, Michael Tilson Thomas and Marin Alsop.

DEVIN DESANTIS, vocalist

Devin DeSantis is a Colorado native who hails from Arvada, and is a former member of the Colorado Children’s Chorale He practically grew up on the Boettcher stage as a member of the Colorado Children’s Chorale. He began his solo career with Colorado Symphony at the age of 11 in Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, conducted by Marin Alsop. Favorite professional credits include Tommy in The Who’s Tommy (Jeff Award Nomination Best Actor) and Marius in Les Miserables (Jeff Award Nomination Best Supporting Actor), Dr. Frankenstein in Young

Frankenstein, Corny Collins in Hairspray, Buddy in the first regional production of Side Show, White Christmas, Camelot, Nanki-Poo in Hot Mikado, Frederic in Pirates of Penzance, Matthew in Altar Boyz Chicago, Judas in Godspell, Jimmy Powers in City of Angels, the world premiere of The Three Musketeers at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Anyone Can Whistle starring Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald, and The Most Happy Fella starring George Hearn. He was a singer for four years in The Radio City Christmas Spectacular. He has also performed in England with Chamber Opera Chicago at the Shanklin Theatre on the Isle of Wight and at the Theatre Royal Winchester. He is a proud graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Music, member of Actor’s Equity, and a founding member/Associate Artistic Director of the Chicago Artists Chorale currently in its second season.

Allison Sill is thrilled to be in Colorado for her first time performing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra! Previous credits include: Laurey in Oklahoma (Paramount Theatre); Les Misérables, Camelot, and Inga in Young Frankenstein (Drury Lane Oakbrook); Miss Sandra in All Shook Up (Theatre at the Center); Rose in The Secret Garden (Court Theatre); and Seussical (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). MARY LOUISE BURKE, associate director, Colorado Symphony ChorusMary Louise Burke is in her 22nd season as Associate Chorus Director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. In addition to assisting Chorus Director Duain Wolfe, she also prepares the chorus for various Colorado Symphony pops concerts and special chorus projects. She is also Associate Director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, conducting the Concert Choir and acting as vocal coach for the Chorale. With an expertise in vocal technique, Burke frequently does seminars in vocal and choral techniques for area church and community choirs. She is the Assistant Music Minister at Montview

Presbyterian Church and has taught classes in “Find Your Authentic Voice” at the University of Denver. She has a Doctorate in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado.

COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS

2015/16 Colorado Symphony season marks the 32nd year of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Colorado Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of 180 volunteers joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts.The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, where it has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing many great masterworks under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman. The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent Hyperion release of the Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem and Hough’s Missa Mirabilis. In 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the chorus, Duain Wolfe conducted the chorus on a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague. The Chorus will return to Europe in 2016 for concerts in Paris, Strasbourg and Munich. POPS BIOGRAPHIESSCOTT TERRELL, conductor

Conductor Scott Terrell is Music Director of the Lexington Philharmonic, appointed to that position in 2009. During his tenure, Mr. Terrell has reinvigorated and raised the artistic level of the orchestra, expanded collaborations, and grown audiences through a greater diversity of repertoire and creative programs. Maestro Terrell has simultaneously maintained a healthy schedule of recent guest conducting with the Opera Hong Kong, Arizona Opera, Colorado Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. Upcoming engagements

include a debut with National Arts Centre Orchestra, and leading William Bolcom’s opera A WEDDING at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Terrell has led with many prestigious international organizations including Opera Colorado, Minnesota Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Milwaukee Symphony, Spoleto Festival, Naples Philharmonic, Eugene Symphony, Richmond Symphony, South Dakota Symphony, and the Kalamazoo Symphony. Previously, he served as Resident Conductor and Director of Educational Programs of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Prior to that, Mr. Terrell was Assistant Conductor of Minnesota Orchestra from 1998-2003, where he conducted hundreds of the Minnesota Orchestra’s performances including Casual Classics, Pops, Opera, Young People’s Concerts, Composer’s Institute and summer Concerts. In the summer of 2000, Terrell was chosen as a fellowship conductor for the inaugural season of the American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival under Music Director, David Zinman. At the conclusion of that summer, Terrell was awarded the Aspen Conducting Prize, an award only given for exemplary musicianship and promise.
