Why EMERGE?

Growing up as a young person in the inner-city is difficult. There are numerous cultural and social influences

which make it difficult to engage African American/Urban adolescents in any form of intervention. Engaging

this particular group is further complicated by psychosocial and behavioral issues ie., substance abuse and

conduct problems.

Understanding that adolescence is a tumultuous period during which identity (self and racial) is developed, it

would be important to utilize protective factors to improve the outcomes of urban youth.

These factors include:

1. Developing positive self and cultural identities

2. Strengthening connection with family and communities

3. Exposing these youth to positive multicultural socialization experiences.

Emerge serves as a culturally syntonic mentoring and coaching program for urban youth that emphasizes

productive and upstanding navigation through life---particularly, during the transition from adolescence to

adulthood. Promoting excellence among urban adolescent youth through education, accountability, and

relationship in the context of cultural and sub-cultural influences.

Jonathan Jacobs is the Founding Principal of Ethos Grooming

Station for Men, LLC. Having attained a satisfying career as a professional in the Architectural field, in mid-2009 Jonathan decided to reinvent himself and pursue an entrepreneurial course. His longtime vision to change the culture of men’s grooming and to usher in a new era of gentlemen quickly spawned into the Ethos GSFM venture. Realizing that in order to truly be successful at implementing his vision, he knew he must find a way to not only reach his contemporaries with his vision, but also those of the younger generation. EMERGE has given him that opportunity. Jonathan was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After high school he graduated from Tulsa Technology Institute with honors and served as class President. While maintaining his focus on raising his young family, he moved to Philadelphia in 2002 to further his education within Architectural Design program at Drexel University.

Jonathan is a happily married husband and father of 16 years. He believes that the process of maintaining healthy relationships with his wife and two children has helped him develop important life skills as well as taught him many life lessons that have benefited him greatly. As Co-Director of EMERGE, he plans to utilize these varied learned skill sets to, not only benefit the EMERGE students, but the entire program as a whole.
