ForewordThe program focus on smart energy was both timely and relevant to the Australian economy. There is clearly an imperative to move to a cleaner more sustainable energy future, and with our partners, we have endeavoured to support a range of innovative solutions that will make a lasting and positive impact on the energy usage, management and production.

This report looks at the inaugural Startupbootcamp program. This has been the first step of an exciting innovation journey that we are embarking on with our partners to help create the future of energy.

Trevor TownsendCEOStartupbootcamp Australia

It is has been a great privilege to work with so many passionate and knowledge professionals during the inaugural Startupbootcamp accelerator program in Melbourne. With our major partners; EnergyAustralia, Spotless and DiUS, we were able to provide a world class program to the most visionary and high-calibre international entrepreneurs in the energy sector.

We would also like to thank the support of our global partners; AWS and CISCO, our supporting partners; KHQ Lawyers, Pitcher Partners and M+C, along with the 200+ mentors and many guest speakers who gave their time and expertise which made the program such as a success.

We launched the program with a vision to run a world class accelerator program in Melbourne. With the strong support of the Australian and Victorian Governments, via a LaunchVic grant and NISA grant for two experts in residence, we believe that we have met our goals to strengthen the Melbourne ecosystem, build diversity via our international focus, and commence the journey to developing Melbourne as the leading ecosystem for smart energy startups.

InnovationThe Australian energy system is in transition. We’re moving towards a cleaner future where consumers are empowered. However, our existing infrastructure and technologies are struggling to keep pace. This problem is not unique to Australia. All around the world utilities and consumers are facing the same challenges of energy affordability, energy reliability, environmental impact and a growing desire to live sustainably. There has never been a better time for disruption.

During our theme setting workshops with partners, we fine-tuned our understanding of smart energy in order to arrive at the following eight key focus areas. This was the framework we used to focus our search for innovative startups.

Key Focus Areas

Big data and advanced analytics is the utilisation of hardware and software solutions designed to process large volumes of data (in the range of hundreds of terabytes) to unearth actionable insights. Big Data is a feature of the energy system but the true value of big data has not been realised.

6. Big Data & Advanced Analytics

AI is a field of computer science dedicated to solving cognitive problems commonly associated with human intelligence, such as learning, problem solving, and pattern recognition. AI and ML (a subset of AI) is probably the most transformative technological leap forward for humankind since electricity itself.

7. AI & ML

A cryptographically-secured shared ledger and database that allows multiple parties to write to it, without any single one of them controlling and owning it - blockchain, or distributed ledger technology, is a new paradigm in the way data, transactions and records are managed, disrupting many age-old industries at a fundamental level.

8. Blockchain

According to the International Energy Agency, improved energy efficiency in buildings, industrial processes and transportation could reduce the world's energy needs in 2050 by one third, and help control global emissions of greenhouse gases. The technology stack including AI and connectivity is catching up to accelerate the improved usage of energy in all sectors.

1. Better Energy Usage

Grids are getting smarter and the cost curve of technologies such as solar and storage is reducing, enabling a wider adoption of the prosumer model. We see grid independence as a natural evolution of these trends where companies and households will look to control their own energy production and consumption.

2. Grid Independence

A smart building is any structure that uses automated processes to automatically control the building's operations including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, security and other systems. The smart buildings deliver more accurate and useful information for improving operations and providing the best experiences for tenants.

3. Smart Buildings & Infrastructure

New technologies like the blockchain are empowering consumers to share and trade electricity with one another and receive payment in real-time from an automated and secure settlement system. The technology is leading to a greater return on investment and lowering of bills.

4. Energy Sharing & Trading

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data within the existing Internet infrastructure.

5. IoT & Connectivity

Lead By ExampleTo communicate to the world and be proud of the work we are doing supporting entrepreneurship and accelerating innovation.

Grow the Startup EcosystemMelbourne has made great strides in becoming a hub for startups. Startupbootcamp wants to continue to play an important part in growing this ecosystem through community engagement and by bringing world leading startups to Melbourne.

To create commercial growth opportunities through investments and partnerships between startups and local companies.

Commercial Growth

Share, Implement, and Advance InnovationTo learn and implement the innovations of our startups through local and national partnerships with companies, universities, and government entities. The collaborative process will advance innovation for all parties.

Melbourne #1 for Smart EnergyTo make Melbourne a global leader in the smart energy sector as well as growing the startup ecosystem in Melbourne.

Our VisionStartupbootcamp is very proud to be in Australia and especially in Melbourne.

Melbourne has a vibrant and rapidly evolving startup ecosystem supported by some of the world’s top universities and research laboratories giving it a number of advantages in the region. It’s ranked fourth globally as a knowledge hub and rapidly becoming the tech capital of Australia. Major U.S. tech companies like Zendesk, Slack, Square, Hired, Stripe and GoPro chose Melbourne to establish their Asia Pacific headquarters.

With the help of our partners and the government of Victoria, Startupbootcamp wants to continue in helping create a startup ecosystem in Melbourne that can develop people who in turn can build great companies and these companies can create disruptive world changing technologies.

The most important part of accelerating a startup is finding the right talent. Since technologies are rapidly changing, each new scouting process gives us a view of the top talent and technologies to ensure we remain relevant.

For our first cohort, the process began with a three month application and scouting phase where we travelled around the world to ensure we met the best Smart Energy innovators. This resulted in 20 startups who we invited to the final selection round.

From this, we selected the top 10 startups who became the first cohort of the Startupbootcamp Program.

Our Local Partners

Our Global Partners

Together we have raised the bar for accelerators, creating Melbourne’s first truly global program. This would not have been possible without the energy, dedication and time shown by our partners, IIRs, EIRs, mentors, and the Startupbootcamp team. For that we thank you all.

We would also like to thank the startups who joined us from around the globe to spend 3 months in Melbourne. They placed an immense amount of trust in us to accelerate their teams.

We will continue to be there for our startups as they go onto the next stages of their development.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to recruiting and working with our next cohort later this year.

Please share these successes in your organisations and let us continue to create, innovate, and disrupt!
