Master of Business Administration (MBA Japan)

Program revision – Executive Summary

The faculty of Management revised its MBA program requirements starting with the 2020-2021 academic

year. In particular, they introduced a flexible-length program that lets students complete the MBA

requirements in a shorter period of time. The new program “de-integrates” several co-taught classes into

individual subject-matter classes, to make it easier to update course syllabi to keep pace with research and

practice. It adds several new courses, such as an experiential course and a course on leadership &

professional skills, in line with student and market demand.

The Desautels Faculty of Management offers a Master of Business Administration in Japan. Students are

admitted based on the same criteria used for the class in Montreal, and the course material is delivered

through intensive weekend classes to students who continue to work while pursuing their degree.

Under Japanese law, McGill offers this program as the “Japanese campus of a foreign university.”

Compliance with that law involves offering the same program requirements through the Japanese campus

as through the foreign one. This means that, since we revised the MBA program requirements last year,

we must now revise the MBA Japan program requirements to bring them in line with what was approved

for the Montreal campus.

The Japanese academic year starts in April, and foreign universities have a one-year grace period to bring

programs into sync to reflect these calendar differences. Thus this revision would come into effect for the

cohort who will start the program in April 2021.

For a major program revision, this executive summary is short. That reflects the content of this revision:

we are simply bringing this program into harmony with the revisions to the primary MBA program that

SCTP approved in the spring of 2019.
