New Year’s Day Concert from Vienna
Saturday, January 2 at 10pm
Despite the global pandemic, the Vienna Philharmonic is giving its 2021 New Year’s Day Concert from the “Golden Hall” of Vienna’s fabled Musikverein. WCLV 104.9 will bring it to Northeast Ohioans on Saturday, January 2. This recorded concert will feature Viennese favorites — including waltzes, polkas and marches by the Strauss family — plus a few surprises. This year, the concert is conducted by the esteemed Riccardo Muti, and hosted by Lisa Mullins of NPR affiliate WBUR in Boston.

Masterpiece: All Creatures Great and Small
Sunday, January 10 at 9pm
James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire get a glorious new adaptation in a seven-part series based on his beloved stories. The series begins when Herriot interviews for the job with harried veterinarian Siegfried Farnon. He soon discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners — and the local farmers are a tough crowd to please. The 1970s adaptation, which aired on public broadcasting, was a favorite of millions of viewers.

They warn that federal debt will undermine the nation’s economic future and more.
UNITED STATES–CHINA SPACE RACE
Tuesday, January 26 at 10pm
The Space Race galvanized internationalsupport for scientific achievement. Since the historic Apollo 11 mission, the United States has maintained its status as the world’s leading nation in space. But now, China is ramping up its national space industry. Would a new United States–China space race be good for humanity? Or would this competition destroy any hope of international peace and cohesion in the future?

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION CONCERT
Monday, January 18 at 8pm
While this year’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert with The Cleveland Orchestra has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, WCLV 104.9 will bring you last year’s celebration in a very special re-broadcast. The 2020 concert was the Orchestra’s 40th MLK, Jr. concert, and featured selections by such prominent African American composers as Florence Price, Duke Ellington and Adolphus Hailstork. Tune in to hear traditional hymns and spirituals, including “Deep River” and “We Shall Overcome.” The program concludes with James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing” — widely known as the Black national anthem. Now is the perfect time to revisit a historic concert by The Cleveland Orchestra.

There is no institution more critical in the fight for racial equity than education. Yet, our education system remains subject to the very ailments that perpetuate structures of inequity and exclusion. For example, in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), Black students are 1.7 times more likely to be suspended than white students. Conversely, white students in CMSD are 1.9 times more likely to be enrolled in honors programs than Black students.
The problem persists on the state level. Recently, the Ohio State Board of Education passed a resolution to “condemn racism and advance equity and opportunity for Black students, Indigenous students and students of color.” Last month, The City Club of Cleveland and ideastream hosted an online forum discussing the resolution. On Friday, December 4, the event addressed the new efforts in place to chart a path towards equity for all Ohio students. Moderated by Dan Moulthrop, the forum featured panelists Paolo DeMaria, Laura Kohler and Renée T. Willis, Ph.D.

It is presented by professional people without frills — who are dedicated to keeping us informed with facts and figures. Although the news is not always pleasant to hear, we know it helps us continue to be informed citizens of this nation. Thank you for all your work.” – Stephen and Bonnie Lau
