Mit der Konzertreihe summer jazz in the city beleben zahlreiche nationale und interna-tionale Jazz Acts die Abende der beliebten Sommer-Open-Air-Konzertserie in Bad Gastein. Von Juni bis September finden die Jazzkonzerte bei schö-nem Wetter unter freiem Himmel im Bad Gasteiner Merangarten statt. Neben arrivierten Stars bietet summer jazz in the city vornehmlich jungen, aufstrebenden und innovativen Musikern aus dem In- und Ausland, sowie den Rising Stars der nationalen und internationalen Jazzszene ein Podium. Die kuratorische Betreuung der Konzertreihe wird vom Sägewerk, dem bekannten Jazztempel und Konzertveranstalter im Gasteiner Tal, übernom-men. Bei schlechtem Wetter finden die Konzerte im Bad Gasteiner Grand Hotel de l’Europe statt. Swinging sounds in the midst of the Alps – jazz on those balmy summer nights. With the concert series summer jazz in the city, numerous Austrian and international jazz acts add zest to the evenings of the popular summer-time, open-air concert series in Bad Gastein. From June to September, jazz concerts take place - at nice weather - under the open skies of the Meran Garten in Bad Gastein. Aside from established stars, summer jazz in the city primarily gives a stage to young, ambitious, innovative musicians from home and abroad, as well as rising stars of the national and international jazz scene. The curatorship of the concert series is handled by the Sägewerk, the famous jazz temple and concert organizer in Gastein valley. In case of bad weather, the concerts take place at the Grand Hotel de l’Europe in Bad Gastein.

So eigenwillig wie der Bandname klingt auch die musikalische Mischung aus Jazz, Folklore, Pop und experimentellen Klängen, mit der „Dee Dolen“ von Tirol aus seit zehn Jahren die internatio-nale Jazz-Szene bereichern. Sängerin Ingrid Moser und Gitarrist Achim Kirchmair kombinieren jazziges Tirolerdeutsch mit tem-peramentvoll Südamerikanischem, nordisch anmutende Melan-cholie mit hochenergetischen Rhythmen. Mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit bewegen sich „Dee Dolen“ zwischen allen Stilen und entziehen sich mit ihrem mitunter hypnotisch wirkenden „Dolen“-Sound elegant jeglicher Schubladisierung.

As idiosyncratic as the band’s name itself, so, too, is the musical blend of jazz, folk, pop and experimental sounds with which “Dee Dolen” from Tyrol has been enriching the international jazz scene for the last ten years. Vocalist Ingrid Moser and guitarist Achim Kirchmair combine jazzy Tyrolean German with temperamental South American, melancholy Nordic accents and high-energy rhythms. With somnambulistic assuredness, “Dee Dolen” move with ease between all styles and, with their occasionally hypnotic “Dolen” sound, are able to elegantly avoid being pigeonholed in any way.

Mit der seltenen Kombination von Fagott und Steirischer Har-monika sind Blaubauer schon durch ihr Instrumentarium speziell. Mit Matthias Loibner und seiner Drehleier gewinnen sie zusätzlich an klanglicher Vielfalt. Im Geist von Bartoks „imaginärer Folklore“ wühlen Blaubauer in alpinen und balkanesken Traditionen, schaf-fen sich ein Repertoire aus beseelten Jodlern, serbischen Dorf-liedern, Austropop-Raritäten und Eigenem, mit Ausflügen in die kollektive Improvisation.

With the rare combination of bassoon and Styrian accordion, Blaubauer are already very special even just in terms of their in-strumentation. With Matthias Loibner and his hurdy-gurdy, they add even greater variety of sound. In the spirit of Bartok’s “folklore imaginaire”, Blaubauer delve into Alpine and Balkan traditions, creating for themselves a repertoire of soulful yodels, Serbian vil-lage songs, Austropop rarities and music that is purely and sim-ply their own, with forays into collective improvisation.

Mit „moods“ lassen Michaela Rabitsch, Sängerin und einzige Top-Jazztrompeterin Österreichs und ihr kongenialer Partner, der Gitarrist Robert Pawlik Inspirationen aus Afrika, aus Kuba, aber auch aus ihrer Wiener Heimat in ihre brillianten Songs einfließen. Sie präsentieren Jazz mit eingängigen Melodien, starken Harmonien, groovenden Rhythmen und abwechslungsreichen Improvisationen in einem aus-gewogenen vokal – instrumentalen Mix. Melancholisch–subtil, dann wieder voll energetischer Kraft, geheimnisvoll, offensiv – so „launisch“ wie das Leben nun mal ist. Mit Texten, direkt aus dem Leben gegriffen, berühren sie mit Tunes, die alle Facetten des Daseins durchspielen.

Geschichten gekonnt zu erzählen und dabei das Publikum auf abwechslungsreiche musikalische Reisen mitzunehmen ist eine der Qualitäten des Quartett des Saxophonisten Werner Zangerle. Als Mitglieder seines Quartetts unterstützen ihn Philipp Jagschitz an den Tasten, Andreas Waelti am Bass und Klemens Marktl am Schlagzeug. Zangerle schreibt für sein Quartett, stimmungsvolle Stücke die einen Rahmen abstecken, aber auch viel Raum lassen, Raum den seine Mitmusiker und er gekonnt nutzen um ihn ge-meinsam mit Musik zu füllen. Musik, die aus dem vollen schöpft.

One of the remarkable qualities of saxophonist Werner Zangerle’s quartet is the ability to tell stories skilfully and bring the audience along on a musical journey of boundless variety. As members of the quartet, he is supported by Philipp Jagschitz on the keyboard, Andreas Waelti on bass and Klemens Marktl, percussion. Zangerle writes pieces for his quartet that have clearly defined parameters, yet leave lots of room, room that he and his musicians are skilfully able to fill together. Music that draws on practically inexhaustible resources.

Bei LE BANG BANG ist die minimalistische Besetzung mit Stimme und Kontrabass komplett. Stefanie Boltz breitet mit ihrer weiten Stimme eine erstaunliche Farbpalette aus. Sie beltet soulig, haucht und flüstert, improvisiert mit Text und Sounds. Ihren Ausdrucks-reichtum stellt sie dabei ganz in den Dienst der jeweiligen Song-Geschichte. Sven Faller verwandelt den Bass in ein Orchester, trommelt virtuos, streicht elegisch oder verwendet elektronische Effektgeräte. Verblüffend schnell wechselt er zwischen grooven-dem Fundament und lyrisch-melodischem Kontrapunkt. Ein hoch-musikalisches Zwiegespräch ohne stilistische Vorbehalte.

With LE BANG BANG, the minimalist instrumentation of voice and bass is all you could ever need or wish for. Her vocal breadth al-lows Stefanie Boltz to spread an astonishing color palette. She belts out Soul with the best of them, she breathes and whispers, improvises with text and sounds; though she always puts her rich-ness of expression completely at the service of the story behind the song. Sven Faller transforms the bass into an orchestra, drums virtuosically, strokes elegiacally, or uses equipment to create elec-tronic effects. He switches between a groovy foundation and lyri-cally melodic counterpoint with astonishing speed; a highly musi-cal dialogue without any stylistic constraints.

Aus den Jazzit Tuesday Sessions heraus entstand Franz Tratt-ners Fun(k) Orchestra, wo er mitunter die Impressionen seiner Aufenthalte in New York City verarbeitet. In seinem Ensemble, das Fun & Funk - wie der Titel schon beschreibt - wunderbar verbindet, fließen auch die Einflüsse seiner Mitmusiker, die einen repräsentativen Querschnitt der Salzburger Jazzszene darstellen, ein. So wird das Fun(k) Orchestra ein mitreißendes, organisches Gefüge, das einlädt, einen lauen Sommerabend groovig-swin-gend zu verbringen. It was from the Jazzit Tuesday sessions that Franz Trattner’s Fun(k) Orchestra arose, where he occasionally processes impressions from his stays in New York City. In his ensemble, which wonder-fully combines fun and funk as the title describes, also flows the influences of his fellow musicians, a representative cross-section of the Salzburg jazz scene. The Fun(k) Orchestra becomes a captivating, organic fabric, which invites you to spend a groovy, swinging, balmy summer evening.

Ihr Duo-Debüt „Á Deux“ aus dem Frühjahr 2009 kombinierte „atem-beraubend herbsüße Akkordeonklänge und ein Cello, das wie ein Kontrabass marschieren kann“ zu „Eurojazz vom Besten“, wie der SPIEGEL schrieb. Auszeichnungen ließen nicht lange auf sich war-ten: Das renommierte Klassik- Magazin FONO FORUM wählte das Album zur CD des Monats. Dass das kongeniale Doppel nach vier Jahren kontinuierlicher Zusammenarbeit und hunderten Konzerten immer noch auf der Erfolgsspur ist, zeigt „Silk Road“: Neugier und Mut sind die herausragenden Tugenden, die Paier und Valcic erneut antreiben.

Their debut as a duo, “Á Deux” from spring 2009, combined “breathtaking bitter-sweet accordion sounds and a cello that can march like a double bass”, to represent “Eurojazz at its best”, as SPIEGEL reported. Distinctions were not long in the offing: Re-nowned classical music magazine FONO FORUM selected the CD as their “Album of the Month”. The fact that this ingenuous duo is still on the track to success, after four years of continuous collabo-ration and hundreds of concerts, is clearly shown by “Silk Road”: Curiosity and courage are the outstanding virtues that continue to drive both Paier and Valcic.

Im Sommer 2012 formierte sich die Jazz-Band namens „wunder-land“ und kreiert eigenständig-kreativen urbanen Sound: Wun-derland erzählt Geschichten. Erlebnisse, die überraschen und berühren. Dabei entsteht ein Zauber, der von der Bühne auf das Publikum übergeht und Phantasien erweckt. Musikalisch ist Wun-derland ein Cocktail aus Soul, Latin Jazz und Singer-Songwriter. Dieser Mix bietet große Möglichkeiten, Emotionen über Stimme und Sounds auszudrücken. Alice Gerschpacher tanzt mit ihrer Stimme im Rhythmus von jazz- & brazil-emotions. Auf charismati-sche, sinnliche und gleichzeitig unprätentiöse Art und Weise.

In summer 2012, the jazz band known as “Wunderland” formed and created their own very individual urban sound: Wunderland shares stories and experiences that surprise and touch. The result is a kind of magic that spreads from the stage to the audience and awakens the imagination. Musically, Wunderland is a cocktail of Soul, Latin Jazz and Singer-Songwriter. This mix offers great opportunities for expressing emotions by means of voice and sounds. Alice Gerschpacher dances with her voice in the rhythm of Jazz and Brazilian emotions; in a way that is charismatic, sen-sual, yet unpretentious.

Das Hauptanliegen der Smart Metal Hornets ist es, in rhythmischer, harmonischer, melodischer und formaler Hinsicht traditionelles Ma-terial aus verschiedenen musikalischen Bereichen innovativ, originell und nicht zuletzt humorvoll aufzuarbeiten und zu fusionieren, wobei sich diese Fusion in der letzten Zeit immer mehr auf die bodenstän-dige Volksmusik konzentriert. Dies geschieht einerseits durch die etwas ungewöhnliche Besetzung, andererseits durch das eigen-willige Programm-Konzept, welches zum Großteil aus Eigenkom-positionen und durchwegs aus eigenen Arrangements besteht. Die musikalische Grundabsicht ist mit einem Wort allerdings leichter zu beschreiben als in dieser Besetzung zu realisieren, nämlich: Groove!

The main goal of Smart Metal Hornets is to take the rhythms, har-monies, melodies and forms of traditional material from different mu-sic realms, and to then to reinterpret and fuse them innovatively, originally and, not least, with a sense of humor. Most recently, this fusion has focused more and more on regional folk music. On the one hand, this is brought about by the unusual instrumentation, on the other by the unconventional program concept, which partially consists of their own compositions and always their own arrange-ments. The underlying musical direction is probably best described in one word, namely: Groove!
