Andy HoltR S Ireland The Real Lancashire Black Pudding Co.

Nick HuntDirector of Mid Pennine Arts

Andy Holt, the proprietor of The Real Black Pudding Co., was made as a Chevalier du Gôute-Boudin (Knight of the Black Pudding) in 1998. During the ceremony he promised to uphold the tradition of black pudding making, and since then he certainly has put the ‘Real Lancashire Black Pudding’ on the map. Whilst continuing to make traditional, multi award winning puddings in his native Rossendale, Andy makes White Puddings and the highly innovative V-Pud, the world’s only vegetarian ‘Black Pudding’.

www.rsireland.co.uk

Nick came to Pennine Lancashire in 1990, since when both Mid Pennine Arts and the area have been through some big changes. Nick grew up in the flatlands - school in Cambridge, a student in Norwich - and then spent the seven years of his first arts job helping establish the Norwich Arts Centre in a redundant mediaeval church. He worked for a few other arts agencies around East Anglia and then migrated north-west, getting to know Liverpool (the Everyman), Nottingham (the Festival) and Manchester (the Green Room) before settling here in the hills. Nick is responsible for leading the Mid Pennine Arts team and for overseeing all aspects of its work. Much of his time is spent on representing MPA and making connections - building partnerships and identifying the best opportunities for projects. Of late, this has meant putting the arts at the heart of regeneration and renewal for Pennine Lancashire. The recently

completed Panopticons project was a labour of love for Nick and he has been absolutely thrilled both by the creative results and by the national and international attention that the project has brought to Pennine Lancashire. “The Pennine Lancashire Festival of Food and Culture has the potential to build on Pennine Lancashire’s growing national and international profile by bringing together food producers, places to eat, tourism attractions and the partner organisations which support and fund the project. I am proud to be an ambassador for an initiative that highlights Pennine Lancashire’s many outstanding assets”.

Friday 7th August

Come along to discover more about the arts in Pennine Lancashire and the Festival of Food & Culture.

Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery is situated in a beautiful Victorian building in the town centre and best known for being a treasure house of the Hart bequest. Hart’s gift of coins, manuscripts and books cannot be matched by any public collection outside London and give the museum its international reputation. “Blackburn and Darwen may be best known for cotton, but this exhibition shows that there was much more to the towns than textiles.

Taking a fresh look at some of our non-textile industries, ‘All Made Here’ brings together original artefacts and newly recorded oral histories to find out just what it was like to work for such big names as Mullards, Northrop, Walpamur and Shaws.”

Sample fine wines and speciality tapas bites with a Lancastrian twist. Festival staff will be on hand to provide information, provide tickets for events and distribute free festival brochures.

Free admission to the museum.

Without doubt one the world’s craziest competitions, and arguably the wildest, wackiest challenge ever to grace the hills of Pennine Lancashire. Previous events brought out the crowds in force to laugh themselves silly as TV cameras and the press recorded the event for audiences all over the world from Australia to the Far East. 2008 was a fantastic family day out featuring grudge matches, water bombs, fancy dress, semi-pro wrestling exhibition bouts and big screen action. 2009 promises just as much slippery fun as the mischievous organisers add more lashings of Lancashire gravy to spruce up the meat and two veg. The winners will receive the glittering trophy to wallow in fame - if not fortune – as the World Gravy Wrestling Champions 2009. Teams and individuals are invited to apply to take part and entry is on a strictly first come first served basis. The dress code is ‘Fancy’ and ‘Entertaining’ and anything remotely rude will be disallowed on sight!
