Maximum number of credits permitted with a condoned fail (core modules excluded) None
Are students permitted to take any additional credits, as per regulation A3; 5.10? No
Are students permitted to take a substitute module, as per regulation A3; 20.7? No
Are there are any exceptions to the regulations regarding credits, progression or award requirements? (where relevant the information should also differentiate the particular requirements of pathways within a programme or nested/exit awards)
Programme approval 2012/13
PAF Initially Approved:
There are 4 core/compulsory modules in all totalling 120 credits. Students must pass all 4 core/compulsory modules to complete the PG dip in Endodontics.
Modules 1 and 2 are usually taken in year 1 and modules 3 and 4 in year 2. Students may apply to amend the normal modular structure with prior approval of
the programme director. Students may choose to exit after successful completion (pass) of modules 1 and 2 (60 credits) in the taught modules and will be
eligible for the award of PGCert in Dental Studies. Individual details of modules 1-4 are in the module specifications.
Satisfactory completion/pass of modules 1 and 2 are a pre-requisite before progressing to module 3 and 4. Modules 1 and 2 are co-requisites of each other
likewise are modules 3 and 4.
Within each module, each student must have satisfactorily completed the pre-requisites to be eligible to sit the examinations.(Please see module specification
for details)
Students must pass all four modules with an overall mark of 50% in each in order to be awarded the Diploma. Compensation will NOT be permitted within
modules, each individual element of assessment must be passed with a mark of 50%. The percentage weighting for the calculation of merit and distinction will
directly reflect the proportion of credits allocated to each module in relation to the overall credit taken within each programme/award, with classification
thresholds set according to the core scheme as set out in the “Credit Framework Regulations” of King’s College London.
Within a module if a student, on the first attempt fails one element of the assessment process outlined in the module specification paperwork they can resit
that element of the module prior to those modules/next modules starting again. If a student fails a second attempt they will not be able to sit again without
consideration for extenuating circumstances by the examination board(KCL regulations A3 section 17 and 18) .
Should students fail both elements of the examination within a module they will not be permitted to resit either element. In extenuating circumstances, the
examination board could allow the candidate to repeat the module and its co-requisite module before being allowed to sit the exam a final time.
Students must enter all end of year module examinations relevant to their year of study. Requests to withdraw from any module examinations must be
received in writing using the Mitigating Circumstances Form (NEA) at least 7 days prior to the examination. (KCL regulations A3 section 17 and 18)
.
Other relevant information to explain the programme structure Please note that new students enrolling on the information provided on this section of the PAF will have these regulations stipulated throughout their programme of study. The only exception to this will be if there are changes made by Professional, Regulatory or Statutory Bodies that are noted to this programme.

PROGRAMME APPROVAL FORM SECTION 6 – EXTERNAL SPECIALIST ADVICE
1. Report of the external specialist Please include comments on the following: The nature of the interaction with the Department/School ie attendance at programme planning meetings, electronic communication, scrutiny of documentation This appears adequate although I am unable to determine how students feed back into the course. The Course organisers may wish to look at the GDC’s guidance on QA PGE. It is also unclear as to how the students will be able to access literature to support written submission or assessment preparation when not on site. The extent to which the programme meets a defined market need There is a clear current and emerging need for endodontics at a sub-specialty level based outwith a hospital setting. Subject content The subject content is appropriate but may need minor modifications during 2015-16 to reflect any changes associated with current NHS Eng work on ‘level 2 practitioners’. The planned RV date will facilitate this. There also appears little reference to surgical endodontics. Engagement with the various points of reference of the national quality assurance framework such as the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications and subject benchmark statements, if applicable – see previous Engagement with the requirements of a professional, regulatory or statutory body, if applicable The course organisers have referred to the limited links where appropriate Any other comments The entry requirement is simply registration with GDC and the course is aimed at ‘newly qualified’ practitioners with ‘no postgraduate experience’. The Course organisers may wish to look at this and possibly aim for a practitioner who has slightly more experience before entering the course e.g. minimum of 2 years postgraduate. Since there are clinical contacts the nature of registration with the GDC should also be clarified – is there a need for full registration? Name: Karl Bishop …………………………. Signature*:…………………….……. 2. Response of the department
Dear Karl Many thanks for your feedback. We will take these onboard and ensure that the specifications address these issues and that these are also addressed in the students' "Programme Handbook". Regarding learning materials, the Programme Director will be providing detailed information through coursebooks, journal clubs etc. In addition, as a postgraduate student they will have access to all the on-line teaching material form the Distance Learning Programmes, in particular the MSc in Endodontics and MClinDent in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics. Kind regards and Best wishes Mark Mark Packer Director of Education (Clinical Curriculum)
