WELCOME MESSAGE

FROM THE PRESIDENT

My dear Colleagues and Friends,

The European Association of Oral Medicine (EAOM) will hold its 14th biennial meeting in Gothenburg, alongside the World Workshop in Oral Medicine (WWOM) VII. We are honoured and delighted to host the WWOM VII, and look forward to listening to the findings of the various groups. It is a significant time for both organi-zations: WWOM is marking its 30th year since its establishment, and EAOM is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The EAOM Board and the Local Organizing Committee have been working tirelessly to prepare an exciting programme that brings together many highly renowned and talented speakers from a range of backgrounds. The scientific component of the meeting will include lectures, slide seminars, case and scientific presentations and interactive sessions to match the highest expectations of research and scholarship.

As a part of the satellite activities, we will proudly continue to offer interested den-tists and physicians the possibility to sit an examination for the EAOM Diploma.

Since its foundation, EAOM has grown and expanded steadily reflecting the incre-asing worldwide importance of Oral Medicine as a dental specialty. Amongst other reasons, this has convinced the EAOM Board to officially outline and present our viewpoint on the diagnosis and management of four of the most common oral dise-ases seen by specialists in Oral Medicine, in the form of position papers.

We can anticipate that in September in Gothenburg you will have the unique chance to meet up and network with many key international colleagues from across the world. Sadly, one of the founding fathers of EAOM, Professor Crispian Scully, passed away last year, and EAOM has chosen to honour his memory by naming the first key talk of the meeting after him.

I look forward to welcoming you to Gothenburg.

My very best wishes to you all, Professor Marco Carrozzo EAOM President

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 14th Biennial Congress of the European Association of Oral Medicine (EAOM) is honoured to welcome you all to Gothenburg. This is the second time Gothenburg hosts an EAOM congress. The first time, in 2000, almost 200 dele-gates attended the meeting. During the last 18 years the field of oral medicine has developed both regarding clinical care and research. This year, we wel-come more than 500 delegates from all over the world to the west coast of Sweden.

The scientific programme has the theme “Current challenges become future developments in oral medicine”. The delegates consist of prominent rese-archers in the field of oral medicine as well as renowned researchers in other fields of life sciences. The latest scientific results will be shared through both oral scientific presentations and a poster exhibition. Almost 200 posters will be at hand during Friday and Saturday. Clinical cases will also be presented.

An important part of an EAOM meeting is the clinico-pathological conference (CPC). In this session, a challenging clinical case is presented by a discussant that is unaware of the correct diagnosis. Together with the colleague that has submitted the case, a discussion follows that eventually will lead to a correct diagnosis. This session enables both cli-nicians and scientists to gain knowledge about rare cases and diagnostic pitfalls.

The EAOM congress is preceded by the World Workshop on Oral Medicine (WWOM) VII during the first days of the

week. WWOM members have pursued the challenging task to retrieve and com-pile state of the art on a number of sub-jects within the scope of oral medicine. The results from the workshop will be presented to the delegates attending the EAOM meeting. This will further increase the scientific level of the meeting. The LOC joins in the President´s statement that we are honoured to welcome the faculty from the WWOM VII to the 14th Biennial Congress of the EAOM. We in the LOC also extend a special thanks to the WWOM organizing committee for an excellent and enjoyable collaboration in the preparation for the two meetings.

EAOM and the LOC also sincerely welcome our sponsors and exhibitors. The companies and organizations that participate in EAOM 2018 are an impor-tant part of the meeting and makes the essential interaction between science, clinics and industry possible. We urge all delegates to visit the exhibition and dis-cuss with our sponsors and exhibitors.

The city of Gothenburg in the autumn can offer sunshine, but also wind and rain. The city is easy to get around in. In the city center you will find shopping, be-autiful parks and excellent restaurants.

The members of the Local Organizing Committee hope you will enjoy the congress and wish you a heartily welcome to Gothenburg and the west coast of Sweden.

Bengt Hasséus (Chair), Inger von Bültzingslöwen, Agne Nihlson Jairo Robledo-Sierra, Maria Bankvall Per-Olof Rödström, Mats Jontell (Senior Advisor), Jonas Sundberg, Lena Lindahl

The EAOM 2018 Congress Dinner will take place at Kajskjul 8, a venue located in the harbour area in the city centre. Kajskjul 8 was built on the quays along the railroad tracks around 1870. Ori-ginally used as a warehouse, the shed was then filled with all kinds of products, such as spices imported from the Orient as well as lumber from the forests of Värmland ( the region north of Gothen-burg), which would then be transported down to southern Europe and other places. It is a building with a lot of inte-resting history, nowdays used for events and dinners.

Dinner includes entertainment, a three course dinner and beverages.
