Nicholas Jarecki’s feature-film debut is a taut, morally thorny thriller with a timely edge. Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is a Wall Street supremo desperate to offload his empire before his massive financial losses are uncovered – by his daughter and heir (Brit Marling), by his wife (Susan Sarandon) and by his business associates. When a bloody error results in the death of his mistress (Laetitia Casta), he attempts a cover-up with the help of a young friend (Nate Parker), but the investigating detective (Tim Roth) smells dirt. Will Miller’s crimes be punished or will his wealth protect him? 15+

Rowdy RathoreRowdy Rathore marks Akshay Kumar’s return to action films after seven years. The movie tells the story of Shiva (Kumar), a small-time thief who is in love with the beautiful Paro (Sonakshi Sinha). Shiva is happy with his lot, until a little girl enters his life, claiming to be his daughter. Investigation reveals that Shiva has a lookalike in Vikram Singh Rathore, a police officer, who happens to be the girl’s father. When Rathore is murdered in an act of vengeance, Shiva takes on the identity of the slain cop and goes about dispensing justice (as violently as possible). Rowdy Rathore makes no excuses for its masala storyline, with everything

from outlandish costumes, long song-and-dance sequences and highly exaggerated acton scenes. The film was aggressively promoted with garish, brightly coloured posters – designed in the style popular in India in the 1970s and 1980s – and all manner of silly taglines, including “Don’t Angry Me!” and “Phaulad Ki Aulad” (Son of Iron). The film is a remake of the Telugu movie Vikramarkudu, and is directed by Prabhu Deva. In 2008, Khan was doing what most aspiring filmmakers did in Bolly-wood – assisting other directors and counting down to her big break. It was then that she heard of this town with its own Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

“They were cleverly using these popular film icons for local prob-lems and issues disguised in pop-ular film satires,” says Khan, 30. “These films dealt with local prob-lems of gutkha and alcohol, with the social messages piggy-backing on them.” She adds that because the town is 80 per cent Muslim, the industry’s films are popular on the Muslim side but the Hindus don’t even know it exists.

Khan and her small crew followed Nasir for four months as he made Malegaon Ka Superman. The su-perhero character in Nasir’s movie comes to Malegaon to rectify local addiction issues in the town, while the villain is a proprietor of a gutkha factory who wants to get everyone addicted. Apart from addiction, Na-sir’s films have dealt with a number of topical problems such as the stig-ma attached to leprosy, rocketing inflation and high taxes.

Most of the actors have other full-time jobs and they do Nasir’s movies as a hobby, filming during holidays. Shafique Sheikh, the lead actor in Malegaon Ka Superman, however, took leave from his job as a loom factory worker to act in the film. To keep budgets low, Nasir uses bul-lock carts for cranes and cameras are mounted on bicycles for action shots. The graphics are cheesy and cheap-looking.

Nasir says: “All of us travel togeth-er and just eat murmura (puffed rice) and sev (a local snack). We buy the costumes from the Chor Bazaar (one of the largest flea markets in India). Lo-cations are mostly free be-cause the people know us, and we get some friends to work for free.”

Akram Khan, who plays the villain in Malegaon Ka Superman, is also the film’s ed itor a nd mu lt it ask s further by composing its songs and score.

The Muslim women of Malegaon don’t appear in

front of the camera though. “And so they would write the script in a way that avoids having women charac-ters,” says Khan.

The satires are screened at small video halls – Malegaon has 14 of them. The films are all the rage in a tiny nearby town called Khandish because of the dialect of Urdu they use, as well as in far-off cities such as Lucknow and Hyderabad, which are comfortable with Urdu.

Compared with Nasir’s early days when he had to produce a film with a mere 50,000-rupee budget, his mov-ies have now received enough atten-tion and financial support for him to double his budget. Today, he even has a television show, Malegaon Ka Chintu, based on a character from the town. Produced by the actress Deepti Bhatnagar, it is screened by India’s SAB TV channel.

Khan never thought the documen-tary, financed by producers based in Singapore, would get this much at-tention, or even ever see a commer-cial release.

All was not well with Malegaon’s leading man, though. Sheikh, the 28-year-old actor who played Super-man, was addicted to gutkha him-

self and died of mouth ca ncer 12 hours a f ter the film’s premiere last September.

Although still dealing with the death of his close friend, Nasir says he remains excit-ed for the future of his film industry. At the documen-tary’s June 29 premiere, no less than the Gangs of Was-seypur filmmaker Anurag Kashyap attended and in-augurated its release.

“I never even thought that I would get to see this in my small life in a small vil-lage,” Nasir says.

Ujala Ali Khan loves art, photography, books, dancing and all things desi. Watch for her Desi Girl column every Tuesday on our Bollywood pagefilmThe Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has praised for Sheikh Nasir’s spoof film Malegaon Ka Superman, about the ill-effects of tobacco, tweeting: ‘Saw it. What a fantastic film! Really loved it! Go for it!’

Before Sheikh Nasir founded Mollywood, the forgotten town of Malegaon escaped a dreary existence via its small video parlours and theatres.

There were and still are Bollywood fan clubs everywhere, especially dedicated to certain ever-popular actors.

On Fridays, after the prayers, there is a stampede to the cinemas. According

to the Supermen of Malegaon filmmaker Faiza Ahmad

Khan, the first Agneepath film from 1990, starring

Mithun Chakraborty and Amitabh Bachchan, remains a favourite and is still played regularly in Malegaon. In fact, she relates, fans

of Charkraborthy will sit together on one side of the

cinema, while the Bachchan fans are on the other – both

groups competing over who can cheer the loudest whenever their idols appear on the big screen. Some even set off actual fireworks inside the hall. Outside the screening rooms are signs that say “Pathake le jaana mana hai” (no firecrack-ers in the theatre).

Chakraborthy’s fan club even has a headquarters, a little space of worship plastered with his pictures and a TV that plays only his films. Its members all sport his haircut and dress like him.

Sheikh Nasir had June 29 all figured out. He gathered more than a dozen of his friends, family and colleagues and rode a bus to Mumbai, about four hours away from his hometown of Malegaon.

Nasir travelled from the small town, a mill and textile city, to attend the com-mercial release of a documentary film, titled Supermen of Malegaon, which chronicles his pioneering role in Male-goan’s tiny, low-budget but popular spoof-film industry known as Molly-wood.

Years back, Malegaon’s power loom economy took a hit because of power cuts and a lack of decent wages. By sparking a mini cinematic revolution, Nasir, 35, was the cushion that sof-tened the blow of economic depression in the film-crazy town. Predominantly Muslim, it is divided by a river – with the Hindus on one side and Muslims on the other.

It all began 13 years ago when Nasir picked up a small VHS camcorder. A self-confessed movie junkie, he owned a video parlour that screened popular Hindi movies, as well as Jackie Chan, Charlie Chaplin and James Bond titles for the townsfolk. He also made post-ers, by hand, of all the films that he put up for screening – posters of city life, of Arnold Schwarzenegger and other be-loved actors.

Not surprisingly, his regular, exces-sive diet of movies seeded an ambition in him to become a filmmaker. So Nasir started to take Bollywood super hits and gave them his own spoof storyline and wacky dialogue. He would get his neighbours to act in them and edited the footage in his friend’s studio.

His first movie, titled Malegaon Ke Sholay and released in 2002, was a hi-larious take on the 1975 cult ac-tion-adventure Sholay. Nasir shot the film on his camcorder with a budg-et of 50,000 Indian rupees (Dh3,300). He quips he made a couple of lakhs off a movie that he produced on a lark.

Nasir’s Molly wood is now several films old: Malegaon Ke Karan Arjun, Malegaon Ka Ghajini, Malegaon Ka Ran-geela, Malegaon Ka Don – and the list goes on. In 2009, he and his crew decid-ed to go off-shore, to Hollywood, and make Malegaon Ka Superman. It is the making of this movie that the director Faiza Ahmad Khan chose to document and celebrate in Supermen of Malegaon.

Meera Gopal peeks inside the world of Mollywood – the film industry in the small Indian town of Malegaon that creates spoof versions of famous flicks – and its latest offering

Three more Mollywood spoof films • Malegaon Ke Sholay (2002)Sholay (1975), by far the most popular film in India’s history, is a quintessential revenge action-drama re-plete with violence, guns, songs and romance. The satirical version changed the name of Gabbar Singh, one of Hindi cinema’s most singularly malevolent villains, to Rubber Singh and the female lead was Basmati instead of Basanti.

• Malegaon Ki Lagaan (2004)Based on the 2001 film Lagaan, which told the story of a village op-pressed by high taxes, set in a time when India was still ruled by the British. The movie’s centrepiece was a cricket match that would decide whether the small town would have to continue paying high taxes. Malegaon’s spoof version features a British ruler who forces the veg-etarian Indian maharaja to swallow an egg, and if he doesn’t, then his village’s power supply would be cut off and the taxes would triple. The king refuses and a cricket battle ensues.

• Koi Hil Gaya (2009)Back in 2003, Koi... Mil Gaya, starring Hrithik Ro-shan, screened to packed theatres as one of Bolly-wood’s first “alien” movies – it was based on a story similar to Steven Spiel-berg’s ET. The cute and cuddly alien in the original movie used sunlight as its fuel and Nasir’s parody had the alien creature depend-ent on chicken tikka and vada pav (a popular Ma-harashtrian snack). Playing the lead role was Mahmood Shah, the town’s Roshan lookalike who, in real life, is a painter.

I might act in the film, too.” Born and raised in California, the 30-year-old New York University graduate moved to Mumbai in 2009 intending to direct a film, but ended up star-ring in 3 Idiots, which won him acting trophies from the IIFA and the Screen Awards. – IANS

ú 4. Karan Johar talks new dance gig The filmmaker Karan Johar, a judge in the celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, says although he’s not a dancer, his experience behind the screen has made him understand the art form. “I have shot about 50 songs. Dance is integral to Indian cinema,” Johar said. “It’s not about rules, but the passion you bring.” He will be joined by the actress Madhuri Dixit (pictured with Johar) and the choreographer Remo D’Souza on the panel. “While Remo is the master of his craft and Madhuri is a master executor, I’ll talk about the concept and the energy the artists bring to the table.” – IANS

ú 5. Sharman Joshi: I’m here for the long runSharman Joshi, who makes his lead actor debut in the forthcom-ing film Ferrari Ki Sawaari, says he intends to make 10 quality films in his career. “I’m not here to prove anything to anyone except to myself. I want to be part of at least 10 great films in my career as an actor. I think Ferrari is going to be one of those,” Joshi said. “I’m here for the long run – 30 to 40 years is the minimum you should expect out of me.” Ferrari Ki Sa-waari, about a boy who dreams of becoming a cricket player, is directed by Rajesh Mapuskar and will premiere in Indian cinemas on Friday. – IANS

McConaughey, 42, invited just two dozen close friends and relatives, reported E! News. The family re-cently moved to Texas, where he was born and raised.

ú 2. Thom Yorke and Jack White to collaborate? The Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke hinted at a potential collaboration with Jack White on Friday, while performing at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, according to The Holly-wood Reporter. “This song is for Jack White,” Yorke said, before launching into the band’s hit Supercollider. “We saw him yesterday, but we can’t tell you why. ú 3. “Sinatra” sings for Abu DhabiA highlight of the packed Rat Pack tribute concert at Adnec on Friday night was when Roman Marek (performing as Frank Sinatra) adapted the song My Kind of Town for Abu Dhabi: “Now this could only happen to a guy like me, and only happen in a town like this,” he be-gan, prompting laughs. “This is my kind of town, Abu Dhabi … ” Marek continued singing, replac-ing Chicago with the UAE capital, while images of Abu Dhabi flashed on the screen behind him.

ú 4. Jazz guitarist Pete Cosey diesPete Cosey, an innovative guitarist who brought his distinctive distorted sound to recordings with Miles Davis, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, has died of complications from surgery. He was 68. In the 1960s, Cosey was a member of the studio band at Chess Records in Chicago, where he played with Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. ú 5. Aniston and Theroux working on spoof filmJennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux are producing a short film meant to parody the paparazzi interest and tabloid coverage they’ve received since they began dating last year. The movie is expected to target the non-stop speculation about Aniston getting married or pregnant. Theroux is reportedly writing and directing the project with Aniston, with filming scheduled in July. – IANS

High-flying new Indian film brings healing touch to GujaratThe Indian-American director Prashant Bhargava is making waves at international festivals for his debut feature film Patang, which tells the story of a family transformed by India’s largest kite festival, in the state of Gujarat.

“What touched me about Gu-jarat was the way people handled

tragedy – riots, natural disasters. And kite-flying played such an im-portant role in providing that mo-mentum to persevere,” said Bhar-gava. “Kite-flying was a purifying experience for them.”

In the film, a successful Delhi businessman takes his rebellious daughter on a trip back to his

childhood home for the festival, where they end up confronting their fractured relationship.

The cast is made up of non-ac-tors; Bhargava did a three-month acting workshop with them. “I would tell them to roam around town for two weeks, do whatever they want to find their character.

Go to chai shops, listen to people, watch how they spoke. That was the way we worked,” he said.

Born and raised in Chicago, Bhargava has previously directed music videos and commercials, evident in the film’s lyrical and visual qualities.

“For the first time, here’s a film

showcasing Ahmedabad in a positive light, not the riots,” he said. “It’s very Indian in roots, very musical.”

Patang has screened in festi-vals in Berlin, New York, Hawaii, Washington and Granada. It will be shown in cinemas around the US on Friday. – IANS

Ryan Gosling was a proud son as he watched his mother graduate from Ontario’s Brock University last week. To avoid attention, the actor sat at the back of a packed auditorium in Canada and refused an interview request by a local paper, saying: ‘This is my mom’s day’

‘Indian cinema is completing 100 years and I’m proud to say that my family has been part of the industry for 80 years, starting from Prithviraj to Shammi and Raj, then me and Randhir and now our kids Ranbir, Kareena and Karisma. I hope the tradition continues’ – Rishi Kapoor

ADFF brings you one of the greatest hollywood musicals ever made: Singin’ in the Rain, co-directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen; along with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney’s spellbinding adventure through an undersea world aboard the mysterious Nautilus; and Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean’s masterpiece of wartime adventure filmed across Jordan, Morocco and Spain. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of post-independence Algerian cinema, ADFF presents a programme in association with the Algerian Agency for Cultural Outreach. The selection includes two landmark films that put Algeria front and centre on the international stage: Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers and Costa-Gavras’ Z, both of which garnered Academy

Awards and had a strong influence on socially conscious films around the world. Also included are rare screenings of films that inspired a national Algerian cinema: Chronicle of the Years of Embers by Mohammed Lakhdar hamina, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes; Opium and the Baton by Ahmed Rachedi; and the delightful comedy Inspector Tahar’s Holiday by Moussa haddad.

South Korean cinema has undergone a resurgence since the late 1990s, often attributed to foreign-content quotas that allow homegrown films to prosper. Whatever the reason, the world has awakened to the multi-faceted creativity of South Korean filmmakers. The last decade has seen exponential growth of the country’s share of the international box office despite storytelling styles quite

different from typical hollywood fare. This small, tight-knit industry demonstrates rich diversity, originality and the ability to please audiences and critics alike. Our selection includes films that have marked a breakthrough in popular and critical acclaim, including Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area, Kim Ki-duk’s Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring and Kim Jee-won’s The Good, the Bad and the Weird; as well as new works

by some of today’s most exciting directors: Choo Chang-min’s Masquerade, hong Sang-soo’s In Another Country and Jo Sung-hee’s A Werewolf Boy.

REINVENT YOURSELF

Every woman has a Rendez-Vous, with herself. The Rendez-Vous Night & Day timepiece is entirely crafted and gemset

at the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. Its automatic movement keeps pace with the constant changes in a woman’s life, as she perpetually

reinvents herself. Rendez-Vous is more than a watch, it is a state of mind.
