A Welcome from the HeadteacherWelcome to the 2017 Denbigh Celebra)on of Success Ceremony.
This Ceremony is our opportunity to celebrate the enthusiasm for learning, drive and determina)on to succeed that our students
possess and the outstanding academic results that these a*ributes bring them. We have the very highest expecta)ons of our
students in terms of their work ethic and academic a*ainment, and this is more than matched by their desire to learn and
improve. All the students here tonight have worked incredibly hard and have achieved examina)on results that bring credit to
themselves and the School as a whole.
We are delighted with how our students rose to the challenge of being the first year group to take the new GCSEs in English and
Mathema)cs with the 9 -1 gradings. Adap)ng to change in the curriculum and examina)on process can be a challenge but our
students, supported by our excellent staff, rose to the occasion to record excellent results. We were delighted to see that as the
very top grades fell na)onally under the new system, we saw the reverse, with a 60% increase on the na)onal figures at
Grade 9. In addi)on, 90% of students achieved the new Grade 4 pass in English or Mathema)cs, one of the
Government’s new key measures. Success con)nued in the Sixth Form with 50% of all A Level grades recorded being at the higher
levels of A* to B, which is a tremendous success.
This is the second year of the new Government scheme to measure the success of students and schools called ‘A*ainment 8’ and
‘Progress 8’. These new measures assess student a*ainment and progress across a broad range of subjects including English,
Maths, Science, Languages and Humani)es as the Government has moved away from focusing on just English and Maths. The
measures also take into account all grades achieved, not just Grade C, as has happened in the past. Last year we were delighted
that we topped the tables in Milton Keynes in terms of both of these measures, which demonstrated that not only did our
students outperform those in all other schools, but that our students made progress whatever their star)ng point. We will hear
later in the year how we have performed against other Schools in Milton Keynes in 2017.
We have used the a*ainment and progress that our Year 11 and Year 13 students have made as the basis for tonight’s ceremony.
We will be celebra)ng those students who have achieved the highest results in the GCSE and A Level examina)ons in the
summer as well as those who have made the most progress during their )me with us. We will also be giving out two School
Community awards, the ‘Lucy Hawthorne Ci)zenship Award’ and the ‘Loman Shield’, which recognise those students who
through their enthusiasm and commitment have contributed to the wider life of the School.
On an evening such as this the impact of the commitment, support and encouragement given to our students by their teachers,
parents and guardians should also be recognised as it is so integral to the students’ success. I congratulate all our award winners
tonight and acknowledge the contribu)on they have made to the success of Denbigh School. I am excep)onally proud of
them all.
