Programmes and Projects  The Govern ment of India has a dopted various schemes and programmes for accelerating the rate of economic growth, eradication of rural poverty through wage employment and self-employment, redistribution of land and security of land tenure, enhanced Minimum Needs Programme, protection of minorities, availability of opportunity for socio- economic uplift, and infrastructure development to help the poor. India is making sincere attempts to achieve the UN Millennium Goals especially pertaining to poverty eradication. The major interventions made by the Government of India for poverty eradication include: 1 Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojna (SGRY) One billion man-days of wage employment are envisaged to be generated every year. Under the Scheme, 5 million tones of food grains will be provided every year fr ee of cost to the State Governments and Union Territories. Earlier schemes of Employment Assurance (EAS) and  Jawahar Gra mSamridhi Yojna (JGSY) had been merged with SGRY. 2 Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) Keeping in view the fact that rura l roads are vital to economic growth and measures for poverty alleviation in the villages, the programme seeks to provide connectivity to all unconnected habitations in the rural areas with a popul ation of more than 500 people through good all weather ro ads by the  Tenth Plan Pe riod (2002-2007). In r espect of  hilly/special category states, the objective would be to connect habitations with a population of 250 persons and above. It is estimated that about

3 Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojna (PMGY)

It aims to achieve sustainable human developmentat the vil lage level.

4 Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojna(SGSY)

Its basic objective is to bring the poor familiesabove the poverty l ine by providing them income-generating assets through a mix of bank credit andgovernment subsidy. The programme aims atestablishing a large number of micro enterprises inrural areas based on the abi l i ty of the poor andresource endowment of each area.

5 National Social Assistance Programme(NSAP)

 The NSAP aims at prov iding social security in caseof old age, death of primary breadwinner andpregnancy. The goal of this programme is ensuringa minimum national standard of social assistance. 

6 Annapurna

 This scheme aims at providing food security to

meet the requirements of those senior cit izens (65years or above) who are destitute and have noregular means of income. The eligible persons areprovided 10 kg of food grains per month free of cost.
