A Conversation with Mr. Banneker Saturday, May 14; 1 - 3 p.m. The Friends of BBHPM, Inc. welcome Mr. Banneker’s arrival in the 21st century with a few questions about the climate 285 years after his birth. He notices it is warmer. We answer the questions by showing him how and what NASA sees from space. After taking it all in he can tell us what it means to our future. Walton-Raji, for beginning family historians. Participants will learn the basic steps from exploring family artifacts and documents to standard records such as census, vital records and other public records. Bring a lunch and laptop. Adults $10 members / $15 non-members Homeschool Nature Day Thursday, May 26; 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Mr. Banneker was a curious naturalist. Join us to hike his property and learn about some of his plants, animals and more through hands-on activities. Dress for the outdoors. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy following the program (optional). Homeschool Families with children ages 6 - 12 $5 per person (No charge for children 3 and under when attending with participating siblings) Useful Herbs of the Garden and Woodland Saturday, May 28; 10 - 11:30 a.m. Banneker’s mother, like other colonial women, valued cultivated and wild herbs for their medicinal, culinary and household uses. Join herbalist Rebecca Snow for a walk through the garden and woodland. Gain knowledge of the health benefits of common culinary and locally growing herbs in order to empower you and your family for improved health. Adults and children 5+ $3 members / $5 non-members / $10 family rate Garlic Mustard Gather Saturday, May 7; 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Hike the trails of Banneker’s Homestead to search out and destroy this easily identified invasive plant. Learn about the origins of and problems with garlic mustard and other invasives on our property. Ben didn’t have to do this 250 years ago, but he’d be proud of us for taking care of his property. Bags provided. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, bring garden gloves, water and sun protection. All Ages FREE Advance registration appreciated Helping Butterflies and Bees: Get Going on a Garden Saturday, May 7; 1 - 2:30 p.m. Our bees and butterflies are in trouble – find out how you can help as we explore the Banneker pollinator garden to learn how to create a native butterfly garden or pollinator patch in your yard. Find out what plants will survive deer and Catonsville clay and still look great. While in the garden we will also look for early season pollinators and butterflies. Take home a personalized garden design and a plant to get you started.
