Location: Cincinnati, OH
Project Dates: Feb 2017
Project Size: 40,000 Sq. Ft.
Project Owner: University of Cincinnati (UC)

Dubbed the University of Cincinnati’s “new front door to the community,” the 1819 Innovation Hub connects students and faculty with building tenants, who represent both businesses and nonprofits. To house the Hub, UC renovated a 133,000-square-foot structure built in 1929 that once housed a Sears store.
In addition to meeting areas, the Hub provides work spaces, including a 12,000-square-foot makerspace outfitted with hand tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, and computer numeric control (CNC) machines. Having flexible, multi-purpose spaces was critical and durability was also a concern.
A 40,000 square-foot floor area was overlaid with 2,600 bags of LevelFlor, TRU PC Polished Concrete and TRU Self-Leveling. Products were mixed using Hippo mixers and polished to a level 3 (semi-polished) state. The final surface has a high sheen and since glass walls were a highlight of the building’s redesign, the floor’s superior light reflectivity helped turn the historic structure into a modern, up-to-date space.
