I. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Develops comprehension and grammar skills

2. Speak with correct pronunciation, enunciation, stress and intonation.

3. Equip teachers with knowledge of the grammatical system of English.

4. Establish contexts which will facilitate effective communication in the four language skills.

5. Deliver speeches with confidence and correct structures.

This course work evaluates learning outcomes 1, 2, 3,4 and 5.

II. SHORT COURSEWORK OBJECTIVES:

1. develop theirs comprehension and grammar skills;

2. develop their speaking skill;

3. increase their confidence and ability to communicate effectively in English;

4. raise awareness on the importance of English for communication; and

5. upgrade their personal language competence and performance in English.

III. Task – Short coursework (100%)

TASK 1: Features of Spoken English (40%)

1. You are required to work individually.

2. Search the internet and other reading materials and print out at least two relevant articles for the following:

a. pronunciation

b. stress

c. rhythm

d. intonation

e. public speaking

f. Characteristics of a good speaker

3. Read, highlight and present the main ideas of each of the article in the form of a graphic organizers.

TASK 2: Preparing Speech (50 %)

1. Based on the ideas that you get from the articles above, prepare a speech of any topic you choose of not less

than five minutes (in written form).

2. Record your speech on an audio tape or CD-ROM.

TASK 3: Written Reflection (10 %)

1. Write an individual reflection in about 100 words on the activity. In the reflection, discuss the strengths and

weaknesses of your activity and how it helps you improve your English.

C. Detailed Requirements for Coursework

1. Cite the source of the text and any references you have used, using the APA format.

2. No duplication of assignments from other coursework is allowed.

3. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.

4. Your work should be typewritten with one and a half spacing and font Arial, size 12.

5. The cover page should have the following information:

a. Name

b. Index number and ID

c. Class/ Group

d. Lecturer's name

6. You should adhere to the deadline. Without an approved extension of time, late submission will be dealt with

severely.
