    INTRODUCTION

    The Project Elephant (PE) was launched bythe Government of India under theMinistry of Environment and

    Forests(MOEF) in 1992 to provideFinancial and technical support ofwildlife management efforts by states oftheir free ranging population of wildAsian Elephants.

    NEED FOR THE PROJECT

    When the survey was done by the governmentagency on the population of elephant ,thefigures revealed the need of such a project tosave elephants. The survey confirm the rapiddecrease in the population of elephant due to

    hunting and poaching, killing for their tusk,decrease in their natural habitat and impact ofmodernization.

    To ensure long term survival of populations ofelephants in their natural habitats.

    To support research of the ecology and

    management of elephants.

    To create conservation awareness among localpeople.

    MIKE

    acronym for Monitoring of illegal killing of elephants.

    Objectives of MIKE are :to measure levels and trends in the illegal hunting of

    elephants

    to determine changes in these trends over time

    to determine the factors causing or associated with

    such changes
