Project Title : CSI Pre-Algebra: Coordinate Plane

Standard Focus: Geometry & Spatial Sense Time Range : 1-3 Days

Supplies : Pencil and Paper

Topics of Focus :

- Ordered Paris

- Using Tables to Sketch Functions

- Transformation of Points

- Quadrants

The Number System

6.NS

6b. Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.

The Number System

6.NS 6c. Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.

The Number System

6.NS

8. Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

Geometry 6.G

3. Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Procedures:

A.) Student will be given the letter from Chief Harris, the possible suspects, and crime scene puzzles.

B.) Students will work in pairs or individually to solve the crime.

C.) Students will determine which suspect should be arrested.

D.) Students will create a portfolio of evidence proving that they have arrested the right person and will demonstrate their understanding of their mathematical content present in the problem.

*E.) Students can present their evidence to the class as an oral presentation.

*Extensions

CSI Pre-Algebra: Coordinate Plane Detectives,

A thief working under the alias “the Fifth Quadrant” has traveled to the end of the earth to rock the world -- Antarctica. It is believed that the Fifth Quadrant is a member of the evil genius group, the Mathemagicians. From what the detectives have gathered thus far from the previous thefts, the Mathemagicians are building a world conquering device.

Fortunately, the Fifth Quadrant has left behind a trail of notes and a cryptic text message that she/he has told us will calculate toward her/his favorite number. Thus far there are six suspects that police have questioned. It is hoped that someone with a relatively strong number sense can crack some codes that have puzzled the detectives on the case so far.

Your job is to bring the Fifth Quadrant to justice and save the planet. You need to be prepared to state your case and demonstrate your understanding of the following skills that the Fifth Quadrant is known to use in his notes.

- Ordered Paris

- Using Tables to Sketch Functions

- Transformation of Points

- Quadrants

Be sure to include:

- Other examples of the concepts

- Definitions

- Any other relevant information.

This is not a time to be sloppy. The slightest miscalculation or illegible footnote could result in a not guilty verdict. Oh, did I mention that use of a calculator might prematurely set off his world conquering device? Good luck to you, gumshoe.

Scene #1 Australian Claim of Antarctica The Fifth Quadrant smuggled a bulldozer onto Antarctica and left with 9,000 pounds of ice. In the snow, investigators found the following note.

Who says there can’t be 5 quadrants? Oh, your math teacher? Oh, the English Language? Oh, common sense? No

matter. I AM the Fifth Quadrant and I’m going to pummel you with ordered pairs and coordinate planes until you surrender. For my first puzzle, I have a secret code.

Connect the coordinates for each shape in order to reveal your first clue (equal to 100)

Shape 1: (-1, -1), (0, 1), (1, -1), (-1, -1)

Shape 2: (-1, -2), (1, -2), (2, -4), (4, -4), (1, 2), (-1, 2), (-4, -4), (-2, -4), (-1, -2)

____ = 100

Scene #2 French Claim of Antarctica

A research center was broken into and $5,000 of excavation equipment was taken.

For the next puzzle, we shall only use the Fifth Quadrant’s favorite quadrant -- the first quadrant.

Label the axis and plot the points from the table. Is the data linear or quadratic?

Scene #3 Chilean Claim of Antarctica

Researchers discovered that the largest family of penguins was penguin-napped from their home. It is suspected that the Fifth Quadrant may use their newest egg in the World Conquering Device.

While I did expect to see a whole bunch of penguins, I didn’t expect for them to talk and wear costumes. I guess that’s something they don’t want you to know about Antarctica or else everyone will move there.

These four penguins have routines and will travel the same path each day (which happens to be a math function). There are 5 spots to catch fish today. How many will catch a fish on their path?

Use a table to determine points on the path of the function, plot them on the coordinate plane and sketch and label each line or curve.

How many penguins will catch a fish?

Scene #4 The South Pole -- Antarctica

The top secret headquarters of Santa Claus was broken into the entire inventory of toys for the good girls and boys was taken! The Fifth Quadrant was immediately put on the Naughty List.

Ever wonder where Santa’s Workshop was? I found the big secret. It’s actually on the South Pole. All that North Pole talk is just one big fake out. Santa needs to round up his nine reindeer, but where are they? It might be surprising, but Santa only speaks in ordered pairs (that’s why his sleigh has a GPS).

At which point are there no reindeer?

Scene #5 Norwegian Claim of Antarctica

Although the details are sketchy, the Fifth Quadrant came upon the home of a previously unknown alien race. The aliens were shaken by the encounter and the lost their proton plasma laser destroyer!

Another surprise! It turns out aliens live here too.

They also use a plotting system not quite like ours.

They are trying to complete their

Scene #6 Orcadas Base -- Argentine Claim of Antarctica

The oldest established station on Antarctica, the Orcadas Base was completely stolen! In its place, the Fifth Quadrant left this final note.

A South Pole Expedition North, South, East and West are not a lot of help on

Antarctica. In order to get from base to base, you will need to follow directions. You will start at Orcadas Base and work from there. Where will you end?
