Low Carbon Electricity Generation

To minimise the impacts of our operations on the environment HK Electric is committed to the production and supply of sustainable electricity
Solar Power
In 2012 HK Electric expands the solar power system at Lamma Power Station the largest photovoltaic installation in Hong Kong commissioned in 2010 producing more than one million units of green electricity so far System capacity has been increased from 550 kW to 1 MW featuring more than 8600 thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) modules
The expanded solar power system will generate more than 11 million units of green electricity annually and reduce 915 tonnes CO2 emission equivalent to planting more than 39000 trees
Advantages of Tandem Junction TFPV technology bull A combination of amorphous silicon and microcrystalline
for enhancement of solar spectrum absorption to increase conversion efficiency
bull Better performance under weaker sunlight and hot weather conditions
bull Measures only 1200 the thickness of traditional silicon materials
bull Requires fewer materials and less energy to produce giving better cost-effectiveness
bull Negligible environmental impacts for the whole life cycle

塊薄膜光伏板所組成
整個太陽能光伏系統每年可生產超過一百一十萬度
綠色電力可減少九百一十五公噸二氧化碳排放
相當於種植超過三萬九千棵樹木

Wind Power
HK Electricrsquos 800 kW Lamma Winds has been producing about one million units of green electricity and offsetting 800 tonnes of CO2
emission every year on average
Riding on the success of Lamma Winds HK Electric is developing a 100 MW class offshore wind farm off Lamma Island It is the first offshore wind farm project in Asia adopting LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology on a wind monitoring station The station is powered by small wind turbines and solar PV panels with a total capacity of more than 3000 W
Upon completion the wind farm is set to produce enough energy for 50000 families representing about 1-2 of HK Electricrsquos annual electricity output It is expected to offset annually the usage of 62000 tonnes of coal and 150000 tonnes of CO2 emission
Natural Gas
Natural gas burns with 50 less CO2 emission than coal To further reduce the carbon intensity of our operations we have increased our gas-fired power generation to over 30 of our power output in 2011 enabling us to reduce about 134 CO2 emission as compared to 2005 level prior to introducing natural gas

Promoting Electric Vehicles
We expand the use of electric vehicles (EVs) to help reduce roadside emissions Up to end 2011 our EV fleet has increased to 38 vehicles which include private cars 16-seater light buses scooter mini pickup trucks and mini goods vans for operational use on HK Island and in Lamma Power Station We plan to add more EVs to the fleet in the coming years
In support of the Government to promote the use of EVs HK Electric has set up seven EV standard charging stations and three quick charging stations Another EV quick charging station at Yue Wan Estate Car Park will be commissioned at end 2012
We have also equipped a lorry with PV panels to power its air-conditioning system the first conversion project approved by the Transport Department for road use which would help improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle We will extend the installation of the same system to two more vans in 2012
Since the first carbon audit conducted in 2007 the carbon footprint of our Head Office has been reduced by 20 Moreover 7 to 15 of carbon footprint reduction were recorded for the buildings of Lamma Power Station

Being also a ldquoCarbon Audit bull Green Partnerrdquo we conduct regular carbon audits in specified office premises and implement a wide range of energy-saving measures across our various operations
To enhance the transparency and disclosure on our GHG emissions inventory we commissioned an independent accreditation body to verify the Companyrsquos GHG assertion

Energy Audits and Surveys
HK Electric provides a free-of-charge energy audit service to our commercial and industrial customers to help them improve energy efficiency at their business premises
ldquoElectricityHomerdquo and ldquoEnergy Surveyrdquo programmes are available at our corporate website to assist domestic customers in achieving energy efficiency and conservation
In addition an online carbon calculator is available on our website for customers to calculate their own carbon footprint generated from electricity consumption
e-billing
Customers may access our ldquoAccount-On-Linerdquo service on the company website or via the ldquoHK Electric Low Carbon Apprdquo to view their past 25-month electricity consumption records and billing information They are also encouraged to receive e-bills to reduce paper By doing so every customer can help reduce 620g CO2 emission per year
Domestic customers may also find information about ldquoCO2 emission per unit of electricity consumedrdquo and ldquoper capita consumption for HK Electric domestic customersrdquo on the bills useful in reminding them of their carbon footprint

Spreading the Low Carbon Message
We reach out to students and the community at large promoting energy conservation and the use of renewable energy (RE)
Smart Power Campaign
Carrying a different theme each year the Smart Power Campaign provides educational activities for school children and the public to promote energy saving and care for the environment
Participants are encouraged to learn how to use electricity in a smart and efficient manner and to adopt a low carbon lifestyle that reduces their carbon footprint
HK Electric Clean Energy Fund
Established in 2006 HK Electric Clean Energy Fund encourages the study and development of RE applications and low carbon life in local schools To date the Fund has sponsored 86 projects by kindergartens local schools and tertiary institutes to explore and learn about RE technologies
We have also launched the ldquoCleanEnergymiddotiSharerdquo networking platform to promote environmental education and share knowledge on RE with Hong Kong youths through seminars and school visits

We care for the community we serve and contribute to a harmonious and sustainable society through supporting various low carbon initiatives
Fishermen Go Low Carbon
HK Electric encourages the local fishing industry to use RE and cut carbon emission by sponsoring the installation of micro-solar panels on their vessels
About 500 fishing vessels and maricultural rafts have been equipped with two photovoltaic panels each of 30 watts to power basic electrical appliances and reduce the use of diesel oil
Green Hong Kong Green
To enhance the ecological value of Hong Kong and Lamma islands and promote sustainable development and environmental education HK Electric and the Conservancy Association join hands to roll out the Green Hong Kong Green programme in 2012 Eight eco-heritage routes on Hong Kong and Lamma islands have been developed with educational panels en-route and over 150 voluntary eco-leaders trained to conduct eco-tours for the public

HK Electric Clean Energy Fund
Established in 2006 HK Electric Clean Energy Fund encourages the study and development of RE applications and low carbon life in local schools To date the Fund has sponsored 86 projects by kindergartens local schools and tertiary institutes to explore and learn about RE technologies
We have also launched the ldquoCleanEnergymiddotiSharerdquo networking platform to promote environmental education and share knowledge on RE with Hong Kong youths through seminars and school visits

About 500 fishing vessels and maricultural rafts have been equipped with two photovoltaic panels each of 30 watts to power basic electrical appliances and reduce the use of diesel oil

To enhance the ecological value of Hong Kong and Lamma islands and promote sustainable development and environmental education HK Electric and the Conservancy Association join hands to roll out the Green Hong Kong Green programme in 2012 Eight eco-heritage routes on Hong Kong and Lamma islands have been developed with educational panels en-route and over 150 voluntary eco-leaders trained to conduct eco-tours for the public

Wind Power
HK Electricrsquos 800 kW Lamma Winds has been producing about one million units of green electricity and offsetting 800 tonnes of CO2
emission every year on average
Riding on the success of Lamma Winds HK Electric is developing a 100 MW class offshore wind farm off Lamma Island It is the first offshore wind farm project in Asia adopting LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology on a wind monitoring station The station is powered by small wind turbines and solar PV panels with a total capacity of more than 3000 W
Upon completion the wind farm is set to produce enough energy for 50000 families representing about 1-2 of HK Electricrsquos annual electricity output It is expected to offset annually the usage of 62000 tonnes of coal and 150000 tonnes of CO2 emission
Natural Gas
Natural gas burns with 50 less CO2 emission than coal To further reduce the carbon intensity of our operations we have increased our gas-fired power generation to over 30 of our power output in 2011 enabling us to reduce about 134 CO2 emission as compared to 2005 level prior to introducing natural gas

Promoting Electric Vehicles
We expand the use of electric vehicles (EVs) to help reduce roadside emissions Up to end 2011 our EV fleet has increased to 38 vehicles which include private cars 16-seater light buses scooter mini pickup trucks and mini goods vans for operational use on HK Island and in Lamma Power Station We plan to add more EVs to the fleet in the coming years
In support of the Government to promote the use of EVs HK Electric has set up seven EV standard charging stations and three quick charging stations Another EV quick charging station at Yue Wan Estate Car Park will be commissioned at end 2012
We have also equipped a lorry with PV panels to power its air-conditioning system the first conversion project approved by the Transport Department for road use which would help improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle We will extend the installation of the same system to two more vans in 2012
Since the first carbon audit conducted in 2007 the carbon footprint of our Head Office has been reduced by 20 Moreover 7 to 15 of carbon footprint reduction were recorded for the buildings of Lamma Power Station

Carbon Disclosure and Carbon Audit
As a participant of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) HK Electric discloses every year our GHG emission position and our efforts in reducing GHG emissions
Being also a ldquoCarbon Audit bull Green Partnerrdquo we conduct regular carbon audits in specified office premises and implement a wide range of energy-saving measures across our various operations
To enhance the transparency and disclosure on our GHG emissions inventory we commissioned an independent accreditation body to verify the Companyrsquos GHG assertion

Energy Audits and Surveys
HK Electric provides a free-of-charge energy audit service to our commercial and industrial customers to help them improve energy efficiency at their business premises
ldquoElectricityHomerdquo and ldquoEnergy Surveyrdquo programmes are available at our corporate website to assist domestic customers in achieving energy efficiency and conservation
In addition an online carbon calculator is available on our website for customers to calculate their own carbon footprint generated from electricity consumption
e-billing
Customers may access our ldquoAccount-On-Linerdquo service on the company website or via the ldquoHK Electric Low Carbon Apprdquo to view their past 25-month electricity consumption records and billing information They are also encouraged to receive e-bills to reduce paper By doing so every customer can help reduce 620g CO2 emission per year
Domestic customers may also find information about ldquoCO2 emission per unit of electricity consumedrdquo and ldquoper capita consumption for HK Electric domestic customersrdquo on the bills useful in reminding them of their carbon footprint

Carrying a different theme each year the Smart Power Campaign provides educational activities for school children and the public to promote energy saving and care for the environment
Participants are encouraged to learn how to use electricity in a smart and efficient manner and to adopt a low carbon lifestyle that reduces their carbon footprint
HK Electric Clean Energy Fund
Established in 2006 HK Electric Clean Energy Fund encourages the study and development of RE applications and low carbon life in local schools To date the Fund has sponsored 86 projects by kindergartens local schools and tertiary institutes to explore and learn about RE technologies
We have also launched the ldquoCleanEnergymiddotiSharerdquo networking platform to promote environmental education and share knowledge on RE with Hong Kong youths through seminars and school visits

To enhance the ecological value of Hong Kong and Lamma islands and promote sustainable development and environmental education HK Electric and the Conservancy Association join hands to roll out the Green Hong Kong Green programme in 2012 Eight eco-heritage routes on Hong Kong and Lamma islands have been developed with educational panels en-route and over 150 voluntary eco-leaders trained to conduct eco-tours for the public
