STUDYING ON THE MOVE:PROPERTY STUDENT GOES GLOBAL

The opportunity to see “property in action” has inspired Auckland

student Brendan Keenan to pick up his studies and take them to Hong Kong.

Brendan is in his third year of a four-year conjoint degree, studying property and commerce and majoring in commercial law. He is also one of many students participating in The University of Auckland’s “360° Auckland Abroad” programme, combining studies with travel. With its international reputation and connections, The University of Auckland offers a wide range of exchange programmes with leading universities worldwide, from Chile to China and from Singapore to Sweden.

Brendan will spend the first six months of 2006 studying at The University of Hong Kong, strengthening his degree with international experience.

The papers he completes in Hong Kong count towards his Auckland degree so despite spending time overseas, Brendan will still complete his studies at the end of next year.

He says the opportunity to immerse himself in a city where the property industry plays such a crucial role was too good to miss.

“The University is right in the middle of the city and studying there will be a fantastic way to see property in action as Hong Kong continues to grow and

change to meet the needs of the people. “While I will be taking mostly commerce

papers, what is offered in Hong Kong is quite different from what is offered here, so I expect to come away from there with a different skill set and perspective from other graduates.

“It is also an opportunity for me to develop greater insight into a culture and economy that plays an increasingly

significant role in New Zealand, both through the number of immigrants who are choosing to live here, and as a business partner.”

The US-born student plans to capitalise on his international portfolio and take his University of Auckland property degree to the world, practicing first in New Zealand before tackling the market in both the US and Asia.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has joined forces with “Universitas 21” universities and

is now able to offer Auckland property students greater overseas study opportunities. As The University of Auckland is a member of Universitas 21, an incorporated association of 17 leading universities

from 10 countries, and delivers a RICS-accredited property programme, students are now able to take part in an overseas study scheme undertaking part of their degree programme in another university or universities.

The RICS/U21 Overseas Study Scheme offers participating students not only academic and professional opportunities,

but also a range of experiences that will challenge the participating students at all levels and give them a chance to become a culturally aware citizen of the world, meet new people, travel to new landscapes, discover new personal strengths, and add an international dimension to their resume.

Participating students continue to pay fees at their home university while learning different academic methods and systems of study at universities that are leaders in their area of research. Living and studying overseas also offers students networking opportunities while enhancing their employment prospects. Further details on the scheme are available from www.rics.org

GRADUATION DINNER:A TIME FOR CELEBRATION AND REFLECTION

The Department of Property Annual Graduation Dinner on May 3

was another great success with the announcement of three new student prizes.

Over 300 students, staff and the property industry gathered to acknowledge student achievement, reward top scholars, celebrate the future of property and reflect on the past year.

Guests who braved the rain found the atmosphere lively and the champagne flowing in the beautifully decorated marquee on the grounds of Old Government House.

Over the course of the evening they were entertained by MC Rob Macdonald of Crockers Property Group, RICS NZ representative John Cameron and Dr Lester Levy, CEO of Excelerator: The NZ Leadership Institute.

A Bayleys Real Estate Group auction, run at high speed and with expert precision

by auctioneer Hayden Duncan, helped raise $17,000 for the Department. Property graduates and current students also played a significant role in the evening. The student reflections by Nigel Tucker, Irene Phang and Sacha Harrap gave guests an insight into the true personalities of Department staff and offered glowing accounts of the perennial favourite – the construction lecture.

Student Mark Hitchcock and his band DC3 provided background music while a video of the graduation procession was accompanied by Westlake Girls High School student Ellie Harris delivering a flawless rendition of Gaudeamus igitur.

The dinner also saw the announcement of three new student awards: The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Prize, and two memorial prizes, the Lesley Allison Memorial Prize and the Gerald Brown Memorial Prize.

Awarding the new prizes, Department of Property Senior Lecturer and Director of Industry Liaison, Deborah Levy, spoke at length of the valued contribution and impact made by graduate Lesley Allison and founding Professor Gerald Brown.

Lesley, who passed away suddenly in August last year, was the 2004 top undergraduate student and was remembered by Deborah “as a warm and talented student, well on her way to becoming a dynamic property professional.”

The Lesley Allison Memorial Prize is sponsored by Lesley’s

parents David and Jeanette, who presented the prize to recipient Simone Brown.

Gerald Brown was described by Deborah as a valued and highly respected colleague. “Gerald was one of the world’s celebrated property academics. As a supervisor and colleague he was a perfectionist, was always extremely generous with his assistance, was patient and would wait for his students to “see the light”, which they inevitably did. Apart from being such an outstanding scholar, he will be remembered by all his colleagues as a genuinely nice person, a great mate, a kind and warm human being and a gentle soul.”

The prize is sponsored by The University of Auckland Society Property Chapter with proceeds from past Graduation Dinners. Gerald’s wife Jan and children Jaquie and David presented the award to Chun Chuin Seah.

PROPERTY DEPARTMENT:EXTENDING THE BOUNDARIES

The Department of Property will be co-hosting the Twelfth Pacific Rim

Real Estate Society (PRRES) Conference from 22nd to 25th January 2006 at the Hyatt Regency, Auckland. For the first time in its history the PRRES conference will also double as the 2006 International Real Estate Society (IRES) Conference.

The theme of the conference is “Extending the Boundaries”, not only in the context of geographical boundaries but also boundaries relating to academic excellence and industry.

PRRES was established in 1993 to provide a formal focus for property researchers, educators and practitioners in the Pacific-Rim Region. PRRES now has over 120 members from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Korea.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the Business School to create a rich environment for the sharing of insights among some of the world’s leading property practitioners and researchers,” says conference organiser, Department of Property Senior Lecturer and Director of Industry Liaison, Deborah Levy.

Two prominent international keynote

speakers have been confirmed. The first is Professor Andrew Baum, Professor of Land Management at the University of Reading and Managing Director of Oxford Property Consultants (which undertakes international property investment research, consultancy and training).

The second is Sing-Cheong (S.C.) Lui, the founder and Managing Director of Pearl River-Hang Cheong Real Estate Consultants Ltd (of Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China). His company PRHC provides comprehensive land and property development consulting services for many leading local and foreign developers as well as the Guangzhou Municipal Government. Besides private business, S.C. is extremely active in academic circles and public service.

Gold sponsors include the Property Institute of New Zealand, The Australian Property Institute, Investment Property Databank (IPD) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

The conference has already proved popular, says Deborah, with around 80-100 property academics and researchers expected from countries including

the UK, US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. A postgraduate colloquium to encourage excellence in postgraduate research is also scheduled with $1000 scholarships available for the two full-time postgraduate students who submit the best summaries of their work

Practitioners are also being encouraged to attend the conference with the final day designated “industry day” and sponsored by global information business IPD. This will include a session devoted to successful joint venture research projects between universities and industry.

TEXAN GRADUATES RIDE INTO TOWN

The growing popularity of its property degree has

prompted the Department of Property to appoint four new staff.

Russell Peterson, Michael Rehm and Jeremy Stone joined the Department at the start of the academic year, while Michael’s wife Olga Filippova began teaching in the Department in June. All four completed their PhDs in Urban and Regional Science at Texas A&M University.

Head of Department, Associate Professor Dr Laurence Murphy, says the four new recruits have varied academic and professional backgrounds, and bring with them a range of skills.

“New staff also serve to strengthen our links with the international property and academic fields, which has advantages for staff and students alike.”

Russell first came to the Department of Property as a visiting academic in 2004. He was so impressed with what he found that he accepted the

offer of a teaching position.“The University of Auckland

Business School clearly realises the significant role property plays in the world economy, evidenced by its commitment in housing a department solely focused on property. Few academic institutions have such a

pioneering vision and this is one of the main reasons I wanted to work here.

“Being located in New Zealand also broadens my exposure to the exciting international property markets within the Pacific Rim.”

Russell previously taught Construction Science at Texas A&M, financial institutions and markets at The University of Texas at Arlington, and several business papers at Blinn College in Texas. He also ran his own commercial property development and consulting services company.

Jeremy Stone was most recently a visiting professor in

the Department of Business and Real Estate at Blinn College. His research interests include sustainable design

a n d d e v e l o p m e n t , entertainment and retail development and historic preservation in real estate development.

Jeremy says, “I came to Auckland because I can see that the Department of Property is at a crossroad. There is an opportunity

here to provide a unique blend of research with a very practical and useful education. I believe the Department has an exciting future in store.”

This is the first academic position for both Michael Rehm, lecturing in

construction, and his wife Olga Filippova, who is lecturing in property research methods.

Prior to coming to Auckland, the pair spent three-and-a-half years working at Scot Holland Estates in Kazakhstan as consultants in the real estate market. They say the opportunity

to teach at The University of Auckland and gain further international experience was “too good to miss”.

Imagine this for a timetable clash. You are invited to attend an

international congress in India, the exact same week your mid-semester exams take place. Impossible? Not when you study with the Department of Property.

Property student and Finance Director for AIESEC Auckland, David Benjamin, recently spent two weeks in India at the 57th AIESEC International Congress. With some departmental flexibility and hard work from David, he was able to sit his exams early, complete his study requirements and still take the time to pursue other endeavours.

AIESEC is the world’s largest student organisation, and an international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential

so as to have a positive impact on society. David has been involved with the local chapter since his first year at The University of Auckland. ”AIESEC really challenges you to develop unique skills and push yourself to the limit,” says David. “Because the Department was so flexible in allowing me to attend the Congress, I got to network with hundreds of other future leaders from around the world, and over 90 different cultures. I’m now involved in running a project currently spanning five countries.

“I simply would not have been able to do that without the Department’s support.”

Not one to waste time, David has already completed his BCom international business papers and is

halfway through the requirements for a BProp. Once those are completed, he plans to round out his conjoint with a Graduate Diploma in Finance.

“I have another three semesters to go and then want to start work in the property industry here, before looking at new opportunities overseas.”

A MESSAGEFROM OUR GOLD PLUS SPONSOR

New Zealand universities’ increasing need to be self-funded means that

now more than ever institutions are looking to the community for active involvement and financial support.

While some corporates fail to see the benefit of sponsorship, others are seizing the opportunity to play an active part in shaping the future of their industry.

When the Department of Property launched its endowment campaign in 2002, appealing to the industry for financial support, one of the first onboard was Knight Coldicutt, Barristers and Solicitors.

For the past three years the firm has been the sole Gold plus sponsor of the Department.

Knight Coldicutt partner, Kerry Knight, says there are many benefits that derive from being involved with the Department that produces the industry’s newest professionals.

“These graduates become the very people we work closely with as property law specialists and in some cases, they’re people we employ. The strength of the industry relies heavily on the strength of the graduates coming through.

“Our partnership with the Department is a means of ensuring graduates enter the industry with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful.

“Study in the fields of property and law require both theoretical and practical input. We see our partnership with the Department as a means of getting that balance right.

“By formalising that working relationship, we can sit alongside those who are developing and teaching

the programmes and be a voice of the industry.

“It is incredibly satisfying to be able to work alongside University staff knowing we are all headed in the same direction. We all want to deliver what is best for the students, and ultimately best for the industry.”

The Department has long enjoyed mutually beneficial partnerships with the property business community, notes Head of Department, Associate Professor Dr Laurence Murphy.

“Our involvement with industry, and the support it provides, means we can offer students business mentors, work experience, networking opportunities and – a favourite of staff and students alike – the Annual Property Graduation Dinner.”

He says industry partnerships provide a cornerstone in their successful delivery of programmes specific to the needs of industry.

“The strength of the Department comes from the strength of its relationships with industry and the profession,” he says.

“It is through their support and sponsorship that we are able to maintain our high standards of teaching and research, attract quality staff, and deliver an internationally accredited programme.

“As a result we know that our graduates are of the highest calibre and well equipped to gain employment both nationally and internationally. At the time of this year’s graduation, 90% of our graduating students were already employed.”

EACH SPONSORSHIP WILL ALLOW THE DEPARTMENT OF PROPERTY TO…

• Continue to offer an outstanding Bachelor of Property degree and produce high quality graduates

• Attract outstanding academic staff• Invest in new academic property programmes, with a focus on postgraduate

offerings• Develop theoretical research strengths• Develop research strengths to meet the needs of the property industry• Forge closer relationships with the property industry

Your support will help us to continue our development of a world-class Department of Property and in turn contribute towards the future of study and research into property in New Zealand. Please contact Deborah Levy at the Department of Property on(09) 373 7599 ext 87331 or [email protected] if you wish to help us achieve our vision.
