DEAN RODNEY COOLIDGE "Deano"President of Senior Class; Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; Thespians 3, 4;A. A. Show 2, 4; French Club 3, 4; President of French Club 4;Camera Club 3, 4; President of Camera Club 3; Debating Club2, 3, 4.

Always has that infernal camera with him. Alwayscatching the "glamour gals" unawares. That's "Deano".Between attempting to explain how his homework didn'tfinish itself, and trying to explain to "Theady" how hehappened to take her books home, "Deano", we are sure, has the makings of a true lawyer.

"I like work; it fascinates me. I can sit and lookat it for hours."

TOFIE ALFRED GEORGE "Tof"Debating Club 2, 3, 4; Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; Christmas Play 3;Thespians 4; Glee Club 1, 2; Operetta 1, 2; A Cappella Choir 3;A. A. Show 2, 4; Vice-President of Class 2, 3, 4; YearbookCommittee 4.

If it's not Prom tickets, or Play tickets, it's oranges orbananas—but you can be sure "Tof" will try to sell yousomething. He never has any trouble with homeworkbecause he can always argue with the teacher until thebell rings. This makes him a successful debating manand a hard nut for the teachers to crack.

"Chained in the market-place he stood —a man of giant frame."

ANN BABETTE SCOTT "Scottie"Glee Club 1; Orchestra 1, 2, 3, 4; Treasurer of Class 1; DramaticClub 2, 3, 4; Treasurer of Dramatic Club 3; Christmas Pageant2; Dramatic Club Play 3; Prom Committee 3; Intramural Basket-ball 3, 4; A. A. Show 4; Yearbook Committee 4; Secretary ofClass 4.

We surely admire anyone that can get anything out of abass fiddle, and Ann sure struts her stuff in Orchestra. We all like her sunny disposition, but a resident ofGuernseytown seems to have been simply dazzled by it.

"There is nothing in which the power of art is shownso much as in playing on the liddle."

HELEN ANN POPOVICH "Pop"Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Choir 4; Operetta 2; Debating Club 2, 3, 4;Dramatic Club 2, 3; Dramatic Club Play 2; French Club 3, 4;Vice-President French Club 4; Class Treasurer 3, 4; Yearbook 4;Intramural Basketball 2; Intramural Softball 2; Student Council3, 4; President Student Council 4; Assistant Editor of Handbook 3.

"Most always busy and buried in work,Helen's still cheerful and gay;

As treasury keeper for last year and thisHer motto is, "Class dues—please pay."

"Let us, then, be up and doing."

HOWARD EDWARD ANDE "Howie"Diplomats 1, 2, 3, 4.

Always at home at the piano, Howie is our class "boogie-woogie" boy. Although we're sure he isn't a woman-hater, he doesn't spend much time with the girls. Dailydoing his good deeds, Howie is a true Boy Scout.

"Kitten on the keys."

RUTH ELIZABETH ANDERSON "Ruthie"Intramural Basketball 2; Intramural Baseball 2.

Although we generally see her with her head stuck in abook, Ruth makes a wonderful center for the girls' basket-ball team in Bethlehem. She is tall enough to flip theball in the basket without the least difficulty. Not havinghad enough of school, Ruth hopes to become a teacher. She certainly gets enough practice helping the rest ofthe Latin class decode homework.

"Is she as quiet as she appears?"

DONALD CLIFFORD ATWOOD "Don" "Harry" "D.A."Glee Club 1, 2, 3; A Cappella Choir 3; Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Diplomats2, 3, 4; Operetta 1, 2; Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; Debating Club 2, 3;Soccer 2; A. A. Council 3; A. A. Show 3, 4; Prom Committee 4.

Whether mixing milkshakes behind the counter, or cuttingcapers on the dance floor, "D.A." can be found in themiddle of it all. When "Don" and "Eggie" get together,we can be sure to hear some quaint singing and somefancy sliding on the slide trombone. One of "Don's"characteristics is his little laugh which fairly shakes thewhole building."Did ye not hear it?—No! 'twas but the wind or the car

rattling o'er the stony street."

RANDALL THOMAS AUSTIN "Ranny"Glee Club 1; Orchestra 1, 2, 3; Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Diplomats 1, 2,3, 4; Dramatic Club 1; Track 1, 2, 3; Soccer 1, 2, 3, 4; A. A.Council 1, 2; A. A. Show 1, 2; Ways and Means Committee 3;Prom Committee 4.

Rat-a-tat-tat, rat-a-tat-tat—that's the sound of "Ranny's"drum as he beats out time for the band. And that's notall he can do; Ranny plays the xylophone too. Yes,Austin is a pretty busy fellow, what with drums, Joyce, chemistry, xylophone, Joyce, soccer, track, and besidesall that—Joyce.

"I love to meditate on anything but books,"

STANLEY JOSEPH BARKAUSKAS "Stas"Baseball 2, 3, 4.

The quietest corner of any classroom will be the onewhere "Stas" is at work. However, everyone takes noticewhen he starts winning honors on the baseball diamond, and we can safely say it isn't every Senior who canpilot an airplane.

"His airship keeps her course."

GEORGE URWIN BARNES "Barney"Barnes joined us only this year, but already more thanone fair damsel is displaying the souvenir of a date.Where did you get all those rings and pins, George?

"O maiden fair! O maiden tail!"

JULIA MARY BAROLAK "Julie"Ways and Means Committee 4.

"Julie"—sounds Southern, doesn't it? Even if she is fromNorth of the Mason and Dixon line, "Julie" is as refresh-ing as any bonafide belle. She seems to know a greatdeal about "beau catching", and is rather clever at it.

"Two of a trade, lass, never agree."

BARBARA RUTH BEACH "Bobbie" "Beache" "Blondie"Intramural Basketball 2, 3, 4; Intramural Baseball 2.

"Beachie", blonde and blue-eyed, is quite an expert atflirting. Barbara enjoys the movies and you can besure that she never goes alone. We would like to read"Bobbie's" diary, especially the Saturday-night page!

"The course of true love never runs smooth."

DONALD LEE BEACH "Don"Don is the fellow who goes riding to and from schoolin Mac's "Blue Beetle," but sometimes takes a day offto enjoy the fresh air(?) Don't be surprised if you seeDon doing just that very thing in a new airplane someday.

"My body is here but my mind isn't."

INEZ LOUISE BERGLUND "Nez"Intramural Basketball 3, 4.

Shiny golden blonde hair and calm, blue eyes; look forthose and you can't miss her. Inez' quiet beauty isreflected in her every action and her thoughtfulness to-ward others. With the practice she has had in typingfor "Inkspots", she will make someone not only a lovely, but efficient secretary(?)

"The blush is beautiful but sometimesmighty inconvenient."

MARGARET RUTH BLACK "Margy"Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Orchestra 1, 2, 3; Debating Club 2, 3, 4;Intramural Basketball 2, 4; Chairman Banquet Committee 4;Milk Committee 3; Dramatic Club 2; Yearbook 4; Choir 3, 4;Student Council 4.

Margy gallops through her course as easily as she gallopsup hill on Major, her horse. With her alto voice and herviolin she supports our musical organizations faithfully.

"Comes Major and his mistress Margy."

ELIZABETH MAY BOOTH "Betty" "Booty"Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Intramural Basketball 2, 3, 4; Dramatic

Club 2; Intramural Softball 2.

Betty looks placid enough, but we are warned that apeppery temper lurks near the surface. Her favoritepastime is dancing, especially at barn dances. Could itbe a farmer?

"She doesn't blush; she just gefs red."

Here's another member of our class who wants to be asecretary. But "Vi" isn't going to be the ordinary type, she hopes to be a medical secretary. We hope youruniform does for you what a uniform does for a soldier.

"The secret of success is constancy to the purpose."

ALICE MAY BRADSHAW "Al"Intramural Basketball 2; Intramural Baseball 2.

Sparkling brown eyes — an enchanting smile — and apleasing personality — that's Alice. "Al" is fond ofsports, and we might add that she is good at them.

"A country gal with city chaim."

ELIZABETH ANNE BRYAN BettyGlee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Debating Club 2, 3, 4; Dramatic Club 2,3, 4; Ring Committee 3; Operetta 2; Yearbook 4; A CappellaChoir 3, 4; Piano Club 2, 3.

"Is that Lily Pons we hear or just Betty exercising hertonsils?" (At any rate, it sounds very operatic.) Whenyou can't find "Bet" trilling the piano keys, batting butter-flies for Biology or drawing fancy hats on her Geometrypapers, just look for a curly brown cocker spaniel andBetty will be puffing along behind.

"A man's best friend is his dog."

DONALD BUCKINGHAM "Buckie""Buckie" can be seen most anytime playing ball in theback yard with the rest of the family. Sports seem tobe his chief interest now but he hasn't broadcast whathe'd like to do after graduation.

"Casey at the bat."

THOMAS ANTHONY CANFIELDTommy would like to shoot the

"Tom" "Tommy"to shoot the "guy" who invented

school. Every morning he crosses his fingers, hopingthat he will be able to slip and slide over the day's work.Well, Tom, there's very little of it left to put up with.

"I would 'twere bedtime, and all well."

GERTRUDE MARIA CANTIN "Gert" "Gerty" "Trudy"Glee Club 1; Yearbook Committee 4.

"Gert" is one of the busiest girls we know, what withstudies, typing, and all the work she does outside ofschool. Surprisingly enough, one of her pet weaknessesis pure white hair. With a good-looking escort alwaysavailable, "Trudy" is never at home of a Saturday night.

"Busy as a Bee."

NINA ROSETTA CHRISMAN "Chris" "Crickets"Orchestra 1, 2, 3, 4; Tumbling Team 2; Glee Club 2, 3;Easeball 2.

It would be hard not to think of Nina in connection withthe orchestra, as she has been a faithful violinist sinceher freshman year. She is planning on being a nurse, and we are sure her sunny smile will keep the patientsin a cheerful mood.

"Always willing to help a hiend."

CAROLYN SHIRLEY COOKGlee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Debating Club 3,Orchestra 1, 2, 3, 4.

"Peggy" is most interested in athletics during school. However, outside of school, her out-of-town friends keepher busy. "Peg", one of the tallest girls in our class, makes a swell basketball player, and is an ideal, all-around friend.

"She craves excitement."

HENRIETTA MARY COPES "Hetta"Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; Intramural Basketball 2, 3; IntramuralBaseball 2; Glee Club 1, 2, 3.

Although she doesn't miss much that goes on around her,Hetta is quite a conversationalist. At least Mrs. Mobergthinks so. At any rate she is a whiz at typing andshorthand, and should make an ideal secretary forsome lucky boss.

"Conversing, I forget all time."

LIVINGSTON VAN RENSSELEAR CROWELL"Livvy" "Liv"

Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Orchestra 1, 2; Glee Club 1, 2; Dramttic Club2, 3, 4; Basketball 2, 3; Baseball 2, 3; Class President 1; A. A.4; Prom Committee 4.

Although a faithful member of the band, we find it diffu-cult to recognize "Liv" when the band plays becausehe is always wrapped up in a Sousaphone. We wonderhow he gets enough wind to blow such a contraption."Liv" seems to have many interests, especially the onein Oakville.

"And the band plays on."

ANGELINE CATHRINE CURULLA "Angie" "Shorty"Glee Club 1, 2, 3; Dramatic Club 2; A. A. Show 2; IntramuralBasketball 2, 3, 4; Intramural Baseball 2, 3, 4; Inkspots Staff 4.

"Au, come on, buy an Inkspots" — is what you can hear"Angie" saying on Friday mornings, and her papers sellwith a bang! But besides being a super-salesman,"Shorty" is a whiz at jitterbugging, and to top that sherates as an A-l cook!

"Oh I am a cooi: and a captain bold."

A. Show 2, 4; CompetitivePlay 3; Dramatic Club Play 2.

Responsible for many of the weird noises and gay stagesets in our plays, "Dates" can be found in his sparetimesitting on a step-ladder, hoisting curtains or paintingscenery. After all big events, he is seen "cutting a rug"on the dance floor — a different girl every time!!

"Variety is the spice of life."

ARTHUR JAMES DeCARUFEL "Art" "Shindler"Dramatic Club 2; Track 4.

"Art" is a likeable lad from this end of the new StraitsTurnpike Speedway. If you should call at his home and heisn't there, the next best place to look is at AveryLamphier's. He is there as much as he is at home.

"Up and play the game."

DANIEL ROCCO DELLACAMERA "Danny" "Roccy"Photography Club 3.

ARLINE ELIZABETH DERRY "Neene"Intramural Basketball 3, 4.

"Neene," with her pal "Cobina" is always seen doingthe polka. Probably her skill in this field accounts forrhythmical speed on the typewriter. What's the bigattraction in Bridgeport, "Neene"?

"Life of the party."

ROSE ANTOINETTE FAMIGLIETTI "Rosie"Glee Club 1, 3; Intramural Basketball 2; Intramural Baseball 2.

ELAINE MAZIE FENN "Fennie" "Kid"If you're looking for Elaine — you can be almost sureto find her in her new, blue Ford. "Fennie" was a "NewYorker", but now, after being in W.H.S. for almostfour years, she's a true-blue Watertownian.

"As she sat in the low-backed car."

DANA KINGSBURY FRANKLIN "Dane" "Franky"Dramatic Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1; Soccer Team 3, 4; TrackTeam 3.

JANE DOROTHEA FULLER "Phil"Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Orchestra 1, 2; Debating Club 2, 3, 4;"Inkspots" 4; Intramural Basketball.

There are many important things to be said of this lass. For one thing, she is very, very ticklish. And if you heara sharp, piercing squeal come from the study hall youcan well imagine who it is. Then, too, she just lovespies. Jane won't have to worry about getting thembecause a fortune teller once said she would marry awealthy man. Here's hoping, Jane!

"Merrily merrily, I live now."

ARNOLD HENRY GARMSOrchestra 1, 2, 3, 4; Play Committee 4.

Most of us associate Arnold with either his violin or acertain very small blonde. If he isn't scraping awayin our orchestra, he's at it down in Waterbury.

"Music hath charms."

LEWIS PALMER GARTHWAITE "Lew"Baseball 1, 2, 3, 4.

Lew polices third base on the baseball diamond andyou can be sure he gets his man. We wonder whetherhe will be our famous major leaguer, with a salaryadequate to support a wife?

"Take me out to the ball game."

ERNESTINE JEANETTE GAUTHIER "Ernie"Bubbling over with smiles and giggles, "Ernie" spreadscheerfulness wherever she goes, and contributes morethan her two-cents-worth to the enthusiastic rooting atthe basketball games. MILLICENT GREASON "Moo-Moo" "Millie-Mouse"Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; Dramatic Club Play 3; Debating Club3, 4; Camera Club 3, 4; Prom Committee 3; Yearbook Committee4; Banquet Committee 4.

Cats are about the only thing she doesn't like. Yes,"Millie" is one of the most personable members of theclass. Since she came to school there hasn't been oneday when "Millie" wasn't flitting around with a grin anda cheerful greeting for everyone. If it is true that aperson's personality reflects in his face, "Millie" shouldgo "miles on her smiles."

"An infectious smile."

Ruthie is a little blonde who comes from Oakville, butshe knows Waterbury just as well, especially the southend of the city. What can be the attraction there,"Blondie"? Ruth plans to go to college to study account-ing. All other things taken into account, it will surelybe a co-ed school — eh what?

"Small, but Oh my!"

MARY HELEN GRUHUSKAS "Mare" "Cobina"Intramural Basketball 3, 4.

"Mare" spends most of her sought-after time in Johnny's,on the receiving end of the production of sodas. Asrumor would have it, Mary is quite proud of one of oldNew England's sons — a fellow from Maine, to bespecif c.

"I don't have to count calories; I just enjoy them."

"The strength of twenty men"

GERMAIN JACK HEBERT "Jack"Milk Committee 3.

Jack may be heard quite frequently asking the question,"What's homework?" That is easy to understand, as bothworking in the shop and coming to school don't leavehim much time to get acquainted with it. He makes upfor lost assignments in class, however, and we're surehe'll be a good airplane mechanic.

"All work and no play doesn't make Jack a dull boy."

CLAIRE RITA HEVEY "Billy"Glee Club 1, 2, 3.

Although Claire has a pleasing personality, her out-standing characteristic is her talent as an artist (favoritesubject — dogs). A sense of humor and a sunny smilemake her welcome to all her classmates. Whenever thereis something that needs doing, Claire lends a willinghand.

Fortunately, allthese sports aren't played at the same season of theyear, or poor "Micky" would be a nervous wreck!! Andthat's not all, for anytime you go into "Johnny's", "Mike"is there to fix up your favorite soda.

"Busy, here and there."

VERONICA B. J. KORZENESKI "Babe"Dramatic Club 3, 4; Intramural Basketball 2; Intramural Baseball 2.

If the ladder of success were in the water, Babe wouldcertainly swim to the top. She's going to be a great dealof competition for you champions, so look out! Babe cando some fancy basket-balling too, and she pounds amean typewriter.

"Bright is the ring of words when the rightperson rings them."

EVELYN MARTHA KULIKAUSKAS "Evie"Glee Club 2, 3, 4; Intramural 2.

With a friendly disposition such as "Evie" possesses, who wouldn't make a success of being an autographhunter? Evie has been a class spirited sort all through, and is always a good subject for a salesman, whether itbe stationery, a play ticket or just a Thursday cupcake.

"Unruffled, I go along."

RITA JOSEPHINE LANEVILLE "Ree" "Au Reet"Glee Club 1, 2, 3; Senior Play Committee.

"Ree", a seemingly quiet girl, is really loads of fun. Wealways thought we would see "Ree's" brown hair undera nurse's cap, but evidently her plans have been changedsince a tall blond came into her life.

"It is a woman's privilege to change her mind."

PETER ARTHUR LEHOTSKI"Adolph's Nephew" "Nosey"

Photography Club; Airplane Model Club.

"Nosey" goes around picking peoples' pockets—notbecause he's a pick-pocket, but just to see what's there. With curiosity one of his outstanding characteristics, Petermust know the contents of every can in the First NationalStore, where he works.

"Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfactionbrought it back."

JANE BEDELL LEWIS "Janie" "Brat" "Puss"Intramural Basketball 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; A. A. Council 4.

"Janie" would be a huge success in the business world, but we believe the domestic world will get her first. Agirl who goes for roller-skating and dancing with en-thusiasm is little, lively Jane.

"She knows what she wants, and she gets it."

If you happen to meet a lass with freckles, a grin, andglasses perched on top of her head, you can be surethat it is Sue. We have often thought Sue should hirea truck to carry her armful of books. Luckily, Susanlives only a short distance from the school.

"I am a lover and have not found my thing to love."

LOUISE CAROLINE LORENSEN "Liz"Glee Club 1, 2, 3; Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; French Club 4; DramaticClub Play 3; Vice-President Dramatic Club 4; Secretary FrenchClub 4; Prom Committee 4.

"Want a piece?" This is Louise's favorite expression, especially during English class, when she is trying toget rid of her inevitable chocolate candy. "Liz" can beidentified by her Nordic beauty, and she is never seenwith a hair out of place.

"Of charming disposition."

RUTH EDNA LUND "Lundy" "Rufus"Glee Club 1, 2, 3; A Cappella Choir 3, 4; Operetta 1, 2; DramaticClub 1, 2, 3, 4; Thespians 4; A. A. Show 2, 4.

Who is the girl that has a sense of humor which overflowsat every chance? Who's the girl who is always tryingto think up ways to postpone English Assignments? Whois the one who always adds zest to the Glee Club andChoir? Why it's "Lundy" of course, we never couldmistake her.

"Why worry? I don't."

DORIS ROSETTA LYNN "Dot" "Links"Intramural Basketball 4.

We all have certain classes which we just don't enjoy, and "Dot" is no exception. This doesn't bother "Links"any — if she doesn't like the class she just doesn't attendit. However, in her attendance she tends to lighten upthe class with her wit.

"Nothing hinders me, or daunts me."

PAUL HENRY MADDOX "Pauly"

Paul is the meek looking, bespectacled little Senior whoalways seems to get his work done on time. This doesn'tmake him uninteresting on the the contrary; well, just ask the girls who ride down with him every morningon the Bethlehem bus!

"A wink is as good as a nod to the wise."

In any scene of activity, "Kate" is usually right in themiddle, either arguing or supporting the "cause" whole-heartedly. "Kay" is a credit to her team-mates in anysports competition, and certainly "puts them over" whilepitching.

"Skillful in every sport."

"We are ready to try our fortunes to the last man."

JEAN STRANG McBRIDE "Gee-un" "Mickle"Intramural Basketball 2, 3; Editor-in-Chief "Inkspots" 4.

Being our class "baby" certainly doesn't keep Jean fromrating as one of our top "Brain-storms." Nothing seemstoo difficult for "Mickle", and heading the publicationof "Inkspots" is just taken in her stride. WILLIAM CHALMERS McBRIDE "Bill"Banquet Committee 4; Track.

Bill is the never ending source of wisecracks whichenliven all our classes. He's even better on the TrackTeam where he piles up points for dear old W. H. S. Itis unusual to hear that Bill has his homework done, butit doesn't seem to worry him very much.

"I cross my bridges when I come to them."

George seems to have eaten more than his share inearlier years, and the overdose of vitamins seems to standhim in good stead on the athletic field. But his lifeisn't all sports. Girls and dancing manage to claim alarge slice of his time.

"Good things don't always come in small packages."

If Mac ever gets a new car, I'm sure we'll all be dis-appointed, for we always think of him with his beautifulblue "Beetle!" There can be no better job than thatof a salesman for Mac after seeing how he handledthose Christmas trees last December! He is alwayscalm and seldom in a hurry, although he's quite a flashon the basketball floor.

"I'm in no great hurry, I'll get there sometime."

WESLEY CHARLES MESKON "Wes""Wes" rides to school with Ruppel in the little jalopyeach morning, all the way from Bethlehem. When notdoing school work "Wes" practices farming and he isa faithful member of the "Bethlehem Bashful Bossie4-H Club."

ROGER PHILIP MILOT "Roge"Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4; Thespians 4; A. A. Show 2, 4; DramaticClub Play 3; Prom Committee 3, 4; Horse and Saddle Club 4;Yearbook Committee 4.

"Roge"is quite an artist too, as you can see from his colorfulposters and glamouristic styles. He certainly makesmost of us appear lazy with all the work he has doneduring his four years here. Where do you get all thatsurplus energy, "Roge"?

"Only empty cans make loud noises."

BERNICE GRISWOLD PALMATIER "Bern" "Bernie"Intramural Basketball 2.

"Number plee-uze" — You are likely to hear that from"Bernie" one of these days, for she is going to be atelephone operator. Jean is definitely not a "fireside sitter" like most of us,for she is a fresh-air fiend. CLASS HISTORYOne bright afternoon in early September, 1938, a long train pulled out of the station

on the first of many afternoon runs that season. It was the longest train in the history of

the railroad, and this was because no other train had had to carry so many passengers.

The same track was used by three other trains, but they were much shorter and ran all

at once in the morning. This one was infinitely superior. It was a newer model, and was

so long it needed the whole track, and needed it all afternoon. Chief Engineer Crowell

and Fireman Masi kept up the speed while Conductor Scott wheedled the modest fares from

the passengers. It wasn't very difficult to keep on schedule as long as Dispatcher Deland

was on the job. The long shiny engine had barely learned how to make steam when a

hurricane struck and nearly blew it off the rails. Only a few fallen trees delayed the trip,

but the travelers later learned that other trains were damaged or completely wrecked.

Some of the passengers liked to sing, so they formed a Glee Club which met once a

week in the station when the cars were being assembled in the Round House. The railroad

company didn't like the congestion in the station so they planned some new cars and

switches. Then everything could run all at once.

A station peppered with shamrocks housed a St. Patrick's Day party, and the commuters

had a high old time dancing and eating. The puffing engine stopped in June and let every-

one rest for the summer, but the ticket men supplied everyone with transfers for the next

season.

September, 1939, found the passenger list not quite so long and a little altered, but

most of the crowd was there, and it still filled the longest train which left the station. This

time everyone had to be more careful. The new switches weren't done and the engine had

to keep clear of two other trains and go in the morning. A still newer outfit had the

afternoon run, and those who had slept so soundly until noon the year before had to

hurry to catch it at eight. Dispatcher Masi was always there to eye the timetables, but

Engineer Pape had difficulty arriving on time to start it. Finally Fireman George would

heap on the coal and the breathless commuters handed their tickets to Conductor Dayton

for another speedy trip.

There was always a lot of work at Sixth Period Station, including a new but energetic

band. The gang was always ready for a party and even paid extra for night trips to games,

debates, and the theater. In the spring they hailed taxicabs and drove to the country for

picnics, and loaded themselves with punch and hot dogs. By the time vacation arrived

CLASS HISTORYthey were all pretty tired and didn't even mind the fact that they would not be enjoying

each other's company for twelve weeks.

September, 1940, found almost all the old commuters on the platform with their transfers

when the train was ready to pull out for the first time that fall. Fireman George was again

on hand and Engineer Clarke started the engine rolling. The new tracks were now complete

and all the travelers went in the morning. Dispatcher Smith handed timetables to everyone

while Conductor Popovich collected the still higher fares. The company was getting low on

cash so milk was sold to the passengers to bring it in. Every time Lunch Period Station

came into view, pockets were emptied in the daily search for a nickel.

Entertainment was plentiful that winter too. The Masquers and Thespians gave several

performances, and some of the debaters went on the air. All the passengers were fond

of basketball, and many night trips were taken to games. In the spring there was a gala

dance, and if possible, more picnics than ever before. For some strange reason most of

the people are immune to repeated overdoses of Coca-Cola and dill pickles, and there

were few ill effects. In spite of the fun, it was a relief to stop and wait for fall.

In September, 1941, the station again hummed with activity. The four-year-old train

was now the oldest in the roundhouse, and its daily occupants were the oldest of the crowd

who watched the clocks on the waiting-room walls. Everyone grumbled a bit to discover

that the fares had gone up again, but purses and pockets were turned inside out to hunt

for extra change. Veteran Fireman George showed the ropes to Engineer Coolidge, assisted

by Conductor Popovich. The schedule was arranged by Dispatcher Scott.

It was very hard to make the station by eight each day, especially when War Time

made it necessary to wake up in the dark. When Sixth Period Station was reached, many

of the passengers had to board other trains and busses on business trips, as they were

involved in The Janus Publishing Company or the R. R. Finance Board.

A dizzy whirl of plays, parties, games, exams, and defense work left all the commuters

rather out of breath, but they recovered in time to have one last dance in the station. They

were all reluctant to take their final transfers from the Railroad Board and see their train

puff down the track without them, but as soon as it was out of sight they ran in all directions

for other trains and busses to begin a hundred new adventures.

BASKETBALL

Sixteen victories out of twenty starts is the tribe's record for the season of1941-42. Led by Captain "Smiley" Zuraitis the team smashed its way towin in some of the most thrilling games ever seen in the W.H.S. gym.The Indians were qualified for the Class B tournament for the first timesince they were placed in that class. One of the closest games of the seasonwas played with Milford, the first tournament game, and Watertown camehome with the laurels. Although we didn't come out so well in the second, the boys fought hard and we proudly say that the school never had abetter team.

GLEE CLUB

The Glee Club turned out for the first meeting in full numbers andelected Lucia Smith as President, Ruth Peck as Secretary, and WilliamEustace, Librarian.

Our new director, Miss Letsky, started with spirituals and Russian folk-songs, which are always fun to sing. For a while the shortage of boysworried her, but she has now learned that an exceedingly small minorityof tenors and basses is a chronic condition in Watertown High.

An outgrowth of the Glee Club, the A Cappella Choir, is only a littleover a year old. Its members are those from the larger group who enjoyworking on more difficult music without accompaniment. They sing at occa-sions such as graduation when the whole Glee Club would involve toomany people.

While it hasn't a great deal to do with singing, another small musicalorganization might be mentioned here. It is called the Piano Club, and itspurpose is to encourage correct practicing among its members. Technicalproblems of the individuals are worked out, and sight-reading is stressedduring the weekly meetings.

BAND AND ORCHESTRA

In spite of the queer blares and hoots that have grated on our ear's

when the band or orchestra has been in rehearsal, the sounds managed

to blend harmoniously at the public performances. The band lent a patriotic

. background to several assembly programs, and hopes to perform in theMay concert.

The Seniors' melodrama was supplied with renditions of "Daisey Belle",

"Man on the Flying Trapeze", and "A Bird in a Gilded Cage" by a few

members of the orchestra. The whole group plans to play for the graduation

exercises.

The officers for the band are President, Donald Atwood, Vice-president,

Livingston Crowell and Ruth Peck, Librarian. President Arnold Garms, Vice-

president Gerard Canty, and Virginia Rogers, Librarian, are in charge ol

the orchestra.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

We, the Class of 1942, do hereby, with the present assemblage as witness, bequeathto our successors and worthy faculty the following:

To Miss Barrett we leave two newspapers daily, one of which she can lend to thestudents, so she will not have to read a paper that has been torn and scribbled upon.

To Mr. Todd we will James McGowan's blue Buick to teach his Economics students howto drive.

To Mr. Fontaine we leave no less than four dozen test tubes to make up for the calami-ties caused by this year's Chemistry class.

To Miss Marshall we will a pair of ear muffs so that the noise in the hall and Mr.Bartlett's "machine" won't interrupt her recitations any more.

To Miss Rowell we leave the memories of a class who always asked, Why? when givena definition or some other such statement.

To Mrs. Manning's future Houeshold Arts classes we leave can openers so that thestudents will not have to use knives, spatulas or their teeth to open bottles.

To Mr. Bartlett we will a bottle of Dr. Fizzbottom's "Sure Weight Remover" so that hewill be able to bend over like the rest of us and touch his hands on the floor.

To Mrs. Moberg we will a ride with Steve Baldwin. To Mrs. Bronson we leave a police whistle and badge to help her direct the noon-hour

traffic in the basement. To all teachers of Chemistry and Physics we leave "How To Draw In Ten Easy Les-

sons", so that students of the future may understand their drawings. To Ave Lamphier we will McGowan's car with accessories (11 tires). To Beth Olson we leave Harriet Walton's toe dancing slippers to carry on in her foot-

steps. To John George we will his brother Tofie's ability to sell tickets, especially to Mrs. Mo-

berg's Senior session room.To Ann Bronson we leave Janice Mattson's feather haircut.

To the Nevers brothers we leave a box of "Wheaties", so they can keep our basketballteam going as we left it.

To Adele Zdanis we leave some of Inez B9rglund's quietness to use during study periods.

To Nancy Magee we leave Angeline Curulla's shyness. To Poplis and Pillis we leave Eddie Woodruff's bicycle so that next year they won't

miss first period every day.

To put some flesh on Bob Follett, we will him Lucia Smith's carrots and celery. To Janice Damery we will Ursula Schatzki's report card, even though she doesn't need

it.To Ruth Copes we leave her sister Henrietta's appetite. To some other swing addict, we will Don Atwood's right shoe so he can go around

beating the varnish off somebody's floor at the local jam and record sessions. To the Junior boys we leave Betty Bryan's studiousness. They all need it.To some Junior we leave Ruth Lund's giggle and hope they will put it in moth balls.

To the next year's Chemistry classes we leave a set of mouse traps to catch the testtube thieves.

To the girls of the student body we leave several large mirrors so they will not haveto stand in line to see themselves.

To these, our last words, we set our hand and seal this fifteenth day of April, in theyear of our Lord, nineteen hundred and forty-two.

The Senior Class
