Agri-business is the mainstay of Kenya’s economy and provides for well over

60% of GD! "owever# the agricultural sector has seen rapid drop in

productivity given the deteriorating weather which has now become

unpredictable and thus discouraged many farming communities from continued

investment in a mar$et that is not predictable! o this end land set aside for

farming on animals and crops that are rain dependent has reduced signi&cantly

over time!

'A(() *+A),, .)' is a limited liability company incorporated in Kenya

under the /ompanies Act /ap 1263# ,aws of Kenya! )t was set up in 405

primarily as sustainable farming trainer and consultancy &rm and has run

several training advisory consultancies in bee$eeping# &sh farming and crop

management techni7ues with funding from 8orld (an$ through the .inistry of

Agriculture targeting mainly disadvantaged groups in rural areas! )t was geared

towards encouraging farmers to set up and put in place sustainable pro9ects in

western Kenya! he challenges most farmers met included limited control over

arable land and especially widows disinherited by their in-laws! )n its attempt to

see$ alternative livelihood for this disadvantaged group# 'A(() *+A),.)'

,imited was approached to underta$e research on the viability of 'abbit

farming! he outcome of the study moved the /onsultants so much so: they

opted to put all e;orts in setting up a rabbit farming and consultancy pro9ect!

and other by-products!

'abbit meat is the best white meat and demand for rabbit meat is increasing in

the local mar$et! .ost of the &ve star hotels in Kenya are willing to introduce

rabbit meat in their menus but the challenge has always been a constant source

which could sustain the demand both locally and for the e>port mar$et! he

@orfol$ "otel for e>ample are serving rabbit on plate# the afari ar$ B /asino

once introduced but could not get ade7uate supplies from farmers and were

forced to remove it from their menu! .ost farmers are forced out of business

especially given huge demand! (uyers in the mar$et strive to enter into

partnerships where they are assured of continued supply especially where the

commodity they are introducing into the mar$et is new and not readily available

everywhere! 'abbits have a high multiplication rate but the demand constraint

)n the local mar$et CKenya one will easily &nd mar$et demand for a minimum of

e>port mar$et is insatiable! /hina# Australia# Denmar$# Germany and outh

Africa re7uire high 7uantities of rabbit meat! he e>port contracts available are

for a period of E years! Kenya will therefore be re7uired to produce 60#000

rabbits per year for a single contract! he country has been able to e>port

barely less than 5% of the total e>port demand!

department at Ms Judith +utinda to the construction of new structures

hrough this program it is our anticipation and belief we will be able to meet our

primary ob9ective of reaching out to farmers and e>pand our stoc$ing levels to

meet local mar$et demand within the &rst 54months and get access to the

products increases the organi?ation plans to mar$et the product internationally!

=rom mar$et intelligence# we have established that there are several large scale

rabbit producers in the country today who have attempted to sell and promote

rabbit products! .ost of these producers are strained by mar$et demand to the

Given this intelligence# we wish to bridge the shortfall in supply of rabbit meat in

the mar$et and further venture into new mar$ets as our production levels
