Proposal For Fantasy Based Photo Shoot
For my shoot I would like to do a forest based shoot with a model that will be dressed in an Elves’ outfit used in Lord of the Rings. I chose the Elves’ because for number of reasons. The first is their connection to nature, which can be seen in the films. One scene in the movies shows a community Elves that are living in a forest. This is why I plan to shoot in a forest. I can use screenshots from the movie to design the outfit and to also look for poses that can be linked to the movies and the characteristics of the Elves. My other reason for picking the Elves is the simplicity of the outfits especially the ones worn by the female Elves. This will save time in designing and creating the outfit from screenshots. Locations For Shoot For my shoot I have been traveling around the local area looking for a forested location that could match those used in the Lord of the Rings movies. My baseline requirement for selections was, dense woodland with small clearings that included shrubs and bushes. What first came to mind was an old English forest but the forests in the areas are heavily managed. This means that bushes and shrubs in forests are cut back often which can mean less greenery for the shoot. Along with bushes and shrubs the lower branches of trees get cut off as well leaving the tress bear at the base. The forested areas that I know such as Upton county park and Wareham forest would not work for my shoot, so I had go look else where for a more suitable location. I was suggested a few different locations such as the bike and footpaths in Creekmoor.
High lighted to the left are the locations that I travelled to in Creekmoor. While here I found a few spots that had a small stream running through them. I would like to incorporate the stream into my photos to add to the composition.
My first stop was the forested area closest to Upton Country Park. This was a well-‐walked area that has created flat barren ground, which is not ideal for the shoot. As I walked further through the trees I came across an area that had the trees going up slop. I believe this could create a good backdrop to shoot against. A little further on I found a small stream with trees running along the side, this could also be used although I feel I would need to use mid and close up shots to keep the background fuller. I personally want to use full body shots with a combination of
portrait and landscape shots depending on the location. I would have to say there were only 2-‐3 spots that I would revisit for a second recon trip or for the shoot. My second location that I believe was the more fruitful of the 2 is the wooded area running along side Longmeadow Lane. This location also includes a steam that runs long side the road and small water logged spot that is further in. I prefer this area of woodland because it seems to be denser at certain points. The only issue I might have is that I might be restricted to portrait shots depending on what is in the background. For more detailed annotations of the location photos please refer to contact sheets. Costume I have looked through the different Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies to research what kind of clothing the Elves wear. The overall style for non-‐combat clothing for both male and female characters is long and flowing using light colours. This style is more prominent in female Elves clothing as they mostly wear long dresses often accompanied by a hooded over coat. I am basing the outfit off of the dress worn by Lady Galadriel in the first Hobbit movie. The dress would be shorter in comparison to the one in the movie for more practicality when moving around. I will be adding a detachable hood to the outfit so we can change between the 2. The added advantage to having a hood is that it might create a more mysterious look to the character.
In addition to the dress I will be including the silver crown to add a reflective element into the photo. In the photos below you can see that the crown is a simple interweaving style of natural forms. I will most likely create the crown using a hair
band or some wire and cover them in Aluminium foil. It is possible to buy replicas of the crown on the internet.
Lighting Since my shoot will be location based I will be using the available light at location. I will be taking a few reflectors with me in case I need to boost the lighting on the model. This will help a great deal especially if I have any shots that are backlit.
