    I. INTRODUCTION

    Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is an educational

    institution that provide education Strata and Diploma, one of which is

    education Strata 1 (S1). Strata 1 program is intended to establish a

    Bachelor of Engineering who mastered the basics from the essence of

    engineering sciences in general and specifically. In this case, Forming the

    ability to think creatively and critically, so they can learn independently and

    continuously. It will be made them always be able to explore the capability

    to follow the globalization era. In achieving its objectives, Sepuluh

    Nopember Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) takes certain

    steps in implementing the curriculum formulation. One of these policies is

    to include practical work in one course to complete the program Strata 1

    (S1).

    Each student must has graduated from lecturing that in total

    amounted to 144 SKS (Credit Semester System). To support this

    requirement, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) has

    prepared everything which is associated with internship, start from

    preparing the application until receipt of the assessment reports of

    agencies / institutions / companies in which the internship is carried out.

    In this case, we expect to know and understand about the

    applications of disciplines that we have learned during the class and to

    learn applications in industry, which are certainly more complex, more real,

    and full of new technology.

    II. BACKGROUND

    Internship is one of the mandatory curriculums to be followed by S-

    1 student of Geomatics Engineering - Faculty of Civil Engineering and

    Planning (FTSP) - Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS)

    Surabaya.

    In addition to fulfilling academic obligations expected these activities

    to increase knowledge about things that happened in the industry so that

    students have views about the purpose and direction of the development

    of technology and able to evolve creativity in order to understand the issues

    raised in the world of industry.

    An understanding of the problems in the industrial world, is expected

    to support the theoretical knowledge has been obtained from the lectures,

    so students can apply directly in the world of work and expected later

    students ready to face challenges in the era of globalization.

    With graduation requirements have been defined, the internship has

    become one of the main drivers of each and every student to know the

    conditions of employment and to see the compatibility between knowledge

    gained in college with practical application in the world of work.

    Geomatics Engineering itself is a modern discipline, which

    integrates acquisition, modelling, analysis, and management of spatially

    referenced data, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Based on

    the scientific framework of geodesy, it uses terrestrial, marine, airborne,

    and satellite-based sensors to acquire spatial and other data. It includes

    the process of transforming spatially referenced data from different sources

    into common information systems with well-defined accuracy

    characteristics.

    A Geomatics Engineer uses knowledge coming from several

    disciplines, such as :

    Geodesy (terrestrial, celestial, and orbital coordinate systems

    measurements).

    Geographical Information Systems (computer systems capable of

    assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically

    referenced information).

    Land Tenure Systems (land information managing, land surveying, land

    right).

    Positioning and Navigation (e.g. with GPS).

    Digital Imaging (how to extract useful information from images according

    to the application, e.g. environmental studies or agricultural studies) and

    Mapping (how to make the maps of tomorrow) using Photogrammetry

    (airborne photographs) or Remote Sensing (images taken by satellite

    sensors).

    Modelling spatial geometry, making observations and estimating

    spatial positions and their uncertainty is a key component of the Geomatics

    Engineering education. Since the world of Geomatics is constantly

    evolving, it is also essential to keep up with the rapid growth of the know-

    how, methods and tools of this interdisciplinary field. (www.wikipedia.com).

    III. RATIONALE

    This practical work carried out has some rationale as follows:

    a. Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, i.e.: Education, Research and Services

    community.

    b. ITS Surabaya educational purposes, i.e.: leadership, expertise, scientific

    thinking and attitudes of community life.

    c. One of ITS Surabaya program, i.e.: to increase cooperation between

    industry and the community thereby increasing the relevance of the

    quality of education and research.

    d. Requirement of graduation internship in the Department of Geomatics

    Engineering ITS.

    e. Necessity of alignment between the system in Universities education

    and the workplace.

    f. Necessity of means to implement the sciences gained in college on the

    world of work.

    g. Student needs practical knowledge in the world of work.

    IV. PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

    Some Purposes and Objectives of the Job Training courses are as follows:

    IV.1 GENERAL

    1. The realization of a synergistic relationship, clear and focused

    between the college and the workforce as users of its output.

    2. Increasing awareness and participation of business world in

    contributing to the national education system.

    3. Opening the insight of students to be aware and understand the

    application of science in the industrial world and able to absorb

    and socialize with the working world as a whole.

    4. Students can learn and understand the working system in the

    industrial world and able to hold a whole problem approach.

    5. To grow and create an insightful constructive thinking patterns for

    students.

    IV.2 ESPECIAL

    1. Internship is one of the compulsory curriculums that must be taken

    by students of Geomatics Engineering Sepuluh Nopember

    Institute of Technology (ITS).

    2. Recognize more about the technology in accordance with that

    studied in Department of Geomatics Engineering ITS.

    3. The scope of internship is to study the Survey and mapping,

    Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information

    System (GIS).

    VI. ACTIVITIES

    Internship done in BP INDONESIA coincide with the holiday

    semester 2013, which according with the ITS academic calendar for the

    year lecture 2012 - 2013 which was in July - August with planning for

    practical work for 2 months. With the breakdown of activities to be done

    include the following activities:

    Introduction of the company and internships

    Literature study

    Observations and collecting company data

    The implementation of assignment

    Writing reports

    The scope of practical work is to study Survey and mapping, Global

    Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS).
