Rusty Pilot Program at KSBM

On May 20, 2017, the Rusty Pilot’s Program was presented by Andy Miller, the Great Lakes Ambassador of AOPA. Twenty pilots and students attended the program and received 3 hours of ground instruction required by flight review 14 CFR 61.56(a)(1). A number of topics were presented including Statistics, Pre-flight, BasicMed, Airworthy requirements, Weather and Airspace. Questions were answered as the program progressed. It was pointed out that over half of all registered pilots are presently not flying as the PIC. With this in mind, the “rule of thumb” is for every 5 years, a pilot has not flown, 1 hour of training is needed. A flight review 14 CFR 61.56(a)(1), not a check ride, would be every two years. Certain documents are on the pre-flight check list: Plastic Pilot Certificate, Gov’t issued photo ID, Medical Certificate (if required) and currency requirements (logbook). If you have your Social Security number on your Certificate, contact the FAA for a new Certificate. The information is public record and can be viewed by others. On May 1, 2017, the FAA passed BasicMed adding a choice for pilots to receive physicals and clearance to continue flight. To qualify for BasicMed one must:

• possess a 3rd Class Medical within the past ten years • acquire a one-time FAA 3rd Class Medical if first time pilot • be examined by state-qualified physician once every four years • complete the on-line course for Aeromedical Factors every two years • meet the compliance requirement with 14 CFR 61.53

It is recommended to have an eye exam before the physician’s exam and to download the AOPA form/checklist to take to the physician. The Aircraft Airworthiness Requirements are as follows: Airworthiness Certificate Registration Certificate (Federal and State) Radio Station License Operating Handbook (manual) Weight and Balance (current) The PIC is responsible for the Airworthiness of the Aircraft. As the saying goes, “Trust but Verify”. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Page 3 EAA Chapter 766 Newsletter www.766.eaachapter.org

Weather conditions are critical to any flight. Pilots call 1-800-WX-BRIEF or go on-line to 1800wxbrief.com or dvats.com for weather reports. Aviationweather.gov includes an icing tool which is extremely helpful. Electronic Flight Bags or EFB (ie. iPads) are becoming more popular for downloading the updates to give the latest weather. Another advantage of the EFB is for charting. It was noted that paper charts will become obsolete or cost prohibitive in the future. METAR is a format for reporting weather information. This is a standard used in 129 countries. The information can be coded or de-coded. It is easy to see wind change and saturation. TAF is another format for reporting weather information. It is issued every six hours for major civil airfields and generally applies to a 24 or 30-hour period. MOS (Model Output Statistics) and DISC (Discussion) are other helpful tools that incorporate surface analysis charts (12 & 24-hour forecasts). The Airspaces were also discussed. It was noted that communication between the ATC and the PIC is crucial. The Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) is essential for weather, runways, approaches and other information such as NOTAMs. NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) and TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) were also discussed. Please note that ”Line Up and Wait” has replaced “Position and Hold”.

News from EAA Chapter 766

Congratulations to Emily Bennett, who was awarded the 2017 EAA Chapter 766 Scholarship in the amount of $500. She currently attends Cedar Grove High School and will be in the Aviation Flight Management Program at Southern Illinois University this fall. Emily has joined the EAA Chapter 766 and is actively volunteering at many of the chapter’s events. Congratulations to Josh Mech, who became a new pilot with the Delta Airlines. His proud parents, Timothy and Darlene Mech, attended the new hire Delta dinner. The photos show Josh, Timothy and Darlene Mech. Josh was one of the students that took a Young Eagles Flight with Dave Rudd and Luiz Cordeiro. “He was very enthusiastic about flying and did follow his dream to become an airline pilot in the future” Luiz said. The EAA Chapter 766 again congratulates Josh for his achievements and wishes him a bright future with Delta Airlines.

Volunteer at a Weekend Work Party at EAA Join us for a weekend day (or two) in Oshkosh, meet some other great EAA members, and help the World's Greatest Aviation Celebration come to life by volunteering at an upcoming Weekend Work Party! EAA is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks and projects as we prepare the grounds for AirVenture Oshkosh 2017. Projects vary but can include grass cutting, tree planting, building construction/remodeling, fence removal, material staging, painting, landscaping, and more. The work varies in physical demand, but we have tasks that are suitable for all ages and abilities. We provide all volunteers with overnight accommodations in the EAA bunkhouse for the weekend, plus meals and beverages during volunteer shifts, a free daily admission exchange ticket for AirVenture 2017, and special evening programming, so there's some fun and fellowship, too!
