MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT04 05

Founded in 2012, the centenary year of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Centennial College is a self-financed, post-secondary, degree granting institution established by HKU and underpinned by the university’s tradition of providing the highest quality of education.

We have inherited the strengths and academic values of our parent institution but have adopted a new and innovative approach in our multifaceted, interdisciplinary degree programmes. We believe that our non-traditional liberal education curriculum will not only give students a broad range of knowledge and skills, but also a global view and understanding of the modern world.

The concept of a Liberal Education is of a process which teaches one how to learn, how to think, and how to take a broader perspective of life. It also teaches one how to be flexible and at the same time reliable, how to live a happier life; but above all, it encourages one to become a better human being. At the same time, a liberal education is designed to develop intellectual ability and can therefore prepare individuals for a variety of employment opportunities. We believe that such an education should be appealing to employers because graduates develop the skills necessary to adapt to a changing workplace, i.e. transferable skills.

Professor John MalpasPresidentCentennial College aspires to be recognised as

an outstanding tertiary education institution in the Asia-Pacific Region, excelling in liberal education and research. We have demonstrated our commitment to academic excellence, and are preparing our students to become global citizens who are involved and engaged in a complex and interconnected world.

As a liberal studies college, the College promotes innovative pedagogies, small class sizes and the importance of experiential, student-centred learning. It strives to build close relationship and collegiality between staff and students and encourages team work whilst recognising the power of the individual. We are committed to providing our students with an enhanced learning experience, strengthening research to improve teaching and learning, and promoting internationalisation.

This year we have our first batch of graduates. Their success marks the achievements of the College. I hope they can serve important roles in connecting the College with the community and in demonstrating the values of liberal education to society.

We look forward to continuing success in the years ahead.

OFFERING A LIBERAL EDUCATION

Our College focuses on liberal education with an aim to nurture students who have analytical minds, critical thinking skills, creativity and the ability to learn independently.

Undergraduate programmes are based on a non-traditional approach that not only gives students a broader range of knowledge and skills, but also a global view and understanding of the wider world which employers are looking for in today’s graduates. Our curriculum is designed in a way that not only imparts practical skills to our students in their chosen specialty, but also helps expand their minds and intellect with a broad range of knowledge and understanding, thereby providing them with a firm foundation for lifelong development, creative thinking, adaptability and learning.

CHANGING TIMES, CHANGING DEMANDS

Leading companies are demanding a far broader range of accomplishments in their graduate employees than ever before. Today, students are expected to have an advanced understanding of the world and societies around them. They need good language proficiency and superior skills in communication, presentation and analysis. Above all, they need the ability to learn independently, think creatively and approach new ideas with a fresh and open mind. These graduate attributes are what Centennial College is geared to providing.

THE LEGACY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG’S HUNDRED-YEAR HERITAGE

In 1912, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the territory’s oldest tertiary institution, admitted its first cohort of students, a milestone in the history of Hong Kong education. Over the past decade, HKU has grown into a renowned international university, nourishing the minds of numerous scholars from around the world while supporting the growth of the city.

In its centenary year, HKU, in continuing to respond to the needs of society, took another bold step by establishing Centennial College, ushering in a new era of high quality, self-financed, multidisciplinary Bachelor Degree programmes to offer additional opportunities for today’s students.

Established in 2012, Centennial College is registered under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance (Cap. 320) and continues HKU’s heritage of providing the highest quality of education for the next generation.

The College is leading the way with an exciting educational approach in its uniquely multifaceted, self-financed, 4-year Bachelor Degree programmes, which have been validated by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.

LEARNING AT CENTENNIAL COLLEGE| About Centennial College | | About Centennial College |14 15

LEARNING AT CENTENNIAL COLLEGEThe College promotes the philosophy of liberal education to nurture a new breed of creative, collaborative and communicative students with a global perspective.

CULTIVATE AN ALL-ROUND TALENT

In facing different opportunities and challenges in the 21st century, our society requires not only specialised talents, but also people with an analytical mind who have the ability to think critically and creatively as well as to learn independently.

At Centennial College, our programmes are structured to balance protean intellect and specialised knowledge. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the College nurtures students to acquire a keen disposition to explore and inquire, placing an emphasis on widening their horizons.

A BROAD AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM

Our broad-based curriculum not only helps students acquire superior skills in their chosen profession, but also gain significant strengths in a wide range of fields including economics, politics, culture, languages, history of civilisation, technology, statistics, environmental studies, music and literature.

Our programmes have four components:

• Generic Studies (including languages, IT and numeracy)

• General Education (including humanities, life science and social sciences)

• Foundation courses for specialised Majors

• Major and elective courses

Each Major also features a cross-disciplinary “capstone” course that helps students develop a wide base of knowledge and learn how to apply it in real-life situations.

COLLEGIALITY BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

Centennial College strives to build close relationships between staff and students and encourages teamwork wherever possible. Cooperation, understanding and respect for others will be the keys to success in tomorrow’s world and constitute the foundations of our teaching practices.

The College has been designed as an intimate environment for teaching and learning where students can feel relaxed and mix easily with other classmates and teaching staff. Our class size is relatively small so as to facilitate a two-way learning process and emphasise the experience of learning in small groups. Our approach towards teaching and learning highlights the importance of taking everyone’s views into consideration, sharing knowledge and responsibility, and collaborating with peers in order to foster interaction, sociability and a team spirit among all members of the College community. Students are assigned a faculty member who acts in the capacity of their academic advisor and provides them with all necessary advice and guidance to achieve their academic goals.

Page 10: PROSPECTUS 2015 16 - Centennial College · 2017. 1. 17. · Established in 2012, Centennial College is registered under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance (Cap. ... 2000 with the

OUT-OF-CLASSROOM LEARNING

The College also places emphasis on interactive teaching and out-of-classroom learning experiences. Students are provided with opportunities to participate in field trips, visits, study tours, service learning as well as internships. Some of these activities, such as the credit-bearing “Accounting Internship” course, are incorporated into the curriculum.

Besides, the College has been networking with employers from various sectors, including commercial firms, non-government organisations and government departments, to provide summer work experience to our students.

Centennial College is committed to integrating a liberal education philosophy with the practical needs of Hong Kong. The broad-based training forms a valuable foundation for many academic disciplines, in particular management studies. In taking management as a liberal art, students are offered a fresh perspective on management that is built upon the understanding of self, human nature, relationships between the individual and society, and lessons from history, classics and contemporary thinkers. Students will be encouraged to develop multiple-perspective thinking, and synthesise and apply the wisdom and moral lessons learnt in a management context.

The School of Management was recently established to drive the development of academic and research programmes in this unique approach to management studies. A new Major, Management as a Liberal Art, under the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme will be offered starting from the 2015-16 academic year.

The School will also establish a Case Research Centre to promote case-based teaching in the tertiary sector in Hong Kong. Through case analysis, students learn to understand the complexity of various contextual factors and appreciate their interplay. They should also see how different aspects of a problem are interwoven, something which is in alignment with the core principle of adopting a liberal art approach in management studies.

Management as a Liberal Art MajorBACHELOR OF ARTS (HONOURS)

The Management as a Liberal Art Major takes a new approach to provide students with a broader perspective on management studies. In today’s globalised society, the complexity of organisational issues often calls for a more thorough and holistic analysis of the social, economic, political and cultural implications in play.

Management is essentially an activity that deals with people, and their diverse values and behaviours, so a good understanding of human needs and motives can largely explain variations in organisational cultures and performance. Taking management from a liberal art perspective enables students to adopt a people-centered approach to examine the irrational behaviours and non-optimal decisions in organisations in light of human characters and dimensions.

Special Features

The Major prepares students to become effective managers undertaking personal and social responsibility towards the world of tomorrow. After completing the programme students will be able to:

• Draw on broad-based knowledge and insights gained from various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to analyse managerial issues;

• Apply concepts and principles from classroom learning to self-management, and develop their communication skills to resolve disputes and conflicts in an ethical manner;

• Take a people-centered approach in management practice to examine the group and individual behaviours with respect to human nature, characters and values;

• Develop an enriched sense of responsibility and examine the ethical principles that underlie the workings of an organisation.

Throughout the year, we got to organise activities for our schoolmates such as the Winter Ball and the Singing Contest. My time in Centennial College has allowed me to meet students from different backgrounds. The professors are friendly and we have a lot of interactions inside and outside the classroom. I joined the summer internship programme in a government department where I could apply what I learnt. Apart from academic life, students at Centennial College can also participate in lots of activities organised by different societies. We can build up our self-confidence and at the same time explore ourselves.

I have made new friends through the orientation day and camp organised by the Students’ Union. Together we support and learn from each other. Upon graduation, I believe we will have equipped ourselves with solid and practical experience.

JOLA MOKYear 3 BA

Centennial College students are from different places with different cultural backgrounds. I like the way we interact with each other, which is really adorable.

ANGUS TSUIYear 3 BA

Centennial College provides a very warm community where it’s very easy to make friends, and easy to get help. With the benefits of small classes, we bump into our friends regularly, and have time to interact with our professors. Unlike bigger universities, your professor will remember your name here!

In March 2014, I had the honour to represent the College by participating in the first International Conference on Management as a Liberal Art in New York. In addition to sharing with business educators from all over the world, I got some tips on what makes for successful leadership and learnt basic management skills. It was really a valuable experience for me; it enhanced my interest and knowledge in management.
