Jogamaya Devi College was assessed and accredited by NAACin November 2014 and awarded Grade B.A grant of Rs. 2 Crores has been sanctioned by RUSA forinfrastructure development and creation of new facilities inthe college.

MILESTONES

The college was established on 17th July, 1932, by Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, in responseto the growing demand for centres of women's education in Kolkata. It began its existenceas the women's section of Asutosh College and functioned within the latter's premises inthe morning hours. The first Principal of the college was Panchanan Sinha and Vice-principal Kalidas Sen. Distinguished Bengali author, Lila Majumdar was its first professor.

The college became a separate establishment in 1957 when it was delinked from AsutoshCollege and affiliated to Calcutta University as Asutosh College for Women. It was renamedJogamaya Devi College in 1958 after the demise of Lady Jogamaya Devi, the noble andspirited wife of Sir Asutosh Mukherjee, and mother of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee.

The women's section of Asutosh College was started with 155 students enrolled for the I.A.course in 1932. It was a matter of great pride for the college that six of its students wererank-holders in the I.A. examination of 1946. Teaching of science subjects began in 1936.

New disciplines were subsequently introduced by its dynamic and farsighted leaders whowere always aware of the demands of the changing educational scenario. An annex buildingwas built in 5A, Rajeswar Dasgupta Road in 1992 to accommodate the students enrolled forthe new courses. Jogamaya Devi College was the first women's college to start the GeologyHonours Course in1956. The NCC Training Course was started under the leadership ofPrincipal Jyotish Chandra Banerjee. Arundhati Sen, the first lady principal of the college,began the Zoology (Hons) Course. Principal Dr. Subrata Gupta, introduced the Botany(Hons.), Statistics (Gen.), Sociology (Gen.), B.Com (Gen.) and Communicative English(Major) Courses and also established the Computer Centre. The B.Com (Hons.), Psychology(Hons.) and Sociology (Hons) Courses were introduced by Principal Gargi Nath. She alsoestablished the Post-Graduate Study Centre in collaboration with Vidyasagar University. AnNSS unit was set up in the college in 2014. Regular PG courses were started from the session2014-15. B.Com (Hons.) in Taxation and Computer Science (General) courses were introducedfrom the academic session 2015-16. The college thus evolved from its humble beginnings

to its present position as a reputed centre oflearning, imparting multi-disciplinary educationrelevant to the demands of the modern world.

OUR COLLEGE TODAY

Jogamaya Devi College has emerged as one of thelargest women's colleges in West Bengal withover 5000 students hailing from all the states ofIndia as well as Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.The teachers, non-teaching staff and students ofthe college persevere to keep alive its rich legacyof excellence. Its cosmopolitan character andemphasis on holistic development centering onacademics have earned the college a uniqueposition in the sphere of women's education.

A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

The college is eternally inspired in all its endeavours by thegalaxy of luminaries- eminent teachers of yester-year andoutstanding ex-students who have helped to shape its present.Professors like Satyendranath Sen (former V.C., C.U.), ShibnathChakraborty, Sri Nirod Kumar Bhattacharya, Dr. Amlan Dutta(former V.C., Vishwa Bharati), Dr. S. P. Gupta (ex-Member ofPlanning Commission), had once been part of the teachingfaculty of this college. The college is honoured to have had asits ex-students a host of other distinguished academicians nowin universities and research institutes in India and abroad.Wesalute all those whose exemplary achievements have brought the college honour and glorythroughout its long and eventful journey.

LOCATION

The five-storeyed academic building of the college at 92, S. P. Mukherjee Road standsopposite the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute and overlooks the busy Hazra Crossing.It is adjacent to Jatin Das Park, which also has a Metro station of the same name. It isextremely well-connected by metro and bus routes to the far reaches of the city and itssuburbs. The nearest railway station is the Tollygunj Station, which is only 1.5 kms fromthe College. Ballygunj station is also within its easy reach.

The administrative building, a six-storeyed structure, is located at 5A, Rajeswar DasguptaRoad which runs parallel to S. P. Mukherjee Road. This building houses the departmentsof Geography, Commerce, Communicative English and Psychology, the Post-Graduatedepartments of Botany and Bengali and the additional laboratories of Chemistry, Zoology

and Botany. In addition to this, there are two libraries and a students' common room. Thecollege computer centre, the NCC Unit Office and the entire administrative unit are alsolocated in this building.

AMBIENCE

The classrooms are bright, airy and spacious. The windows on the southern side open onto the refreshing green of Jatin Das Park popularly known as Hazra Park. The college hasa 100% ragging free environment. The safety of the students and staff is ensured by a teamof efficient security personnel, teachers and staff and an alert administration. The entirecollege is covered by CCTV network.

The teacher- student relationship is a pleasant and synergistic one. The teachers aresympathetic and approachable and are always ready to counsel the students both inside andoutside the classroom. The college is equally proud to have a well-behaved, respectful andcooperative student community. The non-teaching staff is friendly, cooperating and helpful.The administration is accessible to students.

LIBRARY

The main library is spacious and well-lighted and has adequate reading room facilities. Ithas a stock of more than 60,000 books and various important journals. Departments offeringHonours Courses have well-stocked individual seminar libraries for the use of their Honoursstudents. The library is fully computerized. The College has institutional memberships ofAmerican Library and British Council Library, Kolkata.

LABORATORIES

The lab-based departments of the college are provided with spacious and well-equippedlaboratories. The number of laboratories in each department is as follows: • Botany : 4• Chemistry : 5 • Communicative English : 1 • Computer: 2 • Geography: 3 Geology: 2• Physics: 2 • Psychology: 2 • Statistics: 1 • Zoology: 4.

AUDITORIUM

Nivedita Hall, in the administrative building, is the internal college conference hall. TheAsutosh Memorial Hall, a part of the academic building, is used for holding cultural andacademic functions.

COMMON ROOM

There is a spacious Common Room for students, in the academic building, equipped withfacilities for various indoor games. It also has a separate library with a large number ofbooks, journals, magazines and newspapers for the recreation of students. A smallerstudents’ Common Room is located in the administrative building.

COLLEGE CANTEEN

The college has a roof-top canteen in the Academic Building which provides wholesomefood and snacks at subsidised rates to students. Another canteen is located in theAdministrative Building.

CHEAP STORE

A cheap store is located in the ground floor of the academic building to enable studentsto purchase their text and exercise books at concessional rates.

POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENTS (Affiliated to C.U.)

In response to the growing demand for quality higher education, Devi College introducedits first Post Graduate two year degree course in the Department of Botany in the session2014-15. It is the first all girls' post graduate degree course in a Govt. aided College.The PostGraduate course in Bengali was started from the academic year 2016-2017. Both the coursesare affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Renowned Professors from different universities,research institutes and colleges are also devoting their valuable time along with the facultyof this college to teach the post-graduate students.

The P. G. Dept. in Botany has 4 well equipped laboratories (for four special papers), 2general laboratories, a tissue culture laboratory and a dedicated library with 2400 latestbooks and 150 e-books. The lecture theatres are also equipped with modern audio-visualaids.

The P. G. Dept. in Bengali offers two special papers -- Drama and Prose literature. Thedepartment has a well-stocked seminar library with over 300 books.

POST GRADUATE STUDY CENTRE

In 2008, the Directorate of Distance Education, Vidyasagar University, Midnapur opened aPost Graduate Study Centre at Jogamaya Devi College. This study centre has gainedimmense popularity over the past few years with a huge number of students applying forenrolment. The following courses are taught in the study centre at present.

• M, Com in Farm Accounting.

• M.Sc. in Chemistry, Botany, Geography, Zoology, and Environmental Science.The courses are recognized by UGC, SSC, CSC, PSC and UPSC.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS

The college has a thriving NCC contingent under the able and enthusiastic leadership ofMajor Nilima Barua, its ANO. Our NCC contingent is one of the largest under the 1stBengal Girls Battalion NCC. The College offers the 'B' and 'C’ certificate NCC courses.Students successfully completing the ‘C’ certificate course are exempted from appearing inthe written entrance examinations for joining the armed forces after graduation. Many ofour C-certificate cadets have joined the armed forces. Cadets from this college have wondistinctions at the State and National levels like the Governor's Gold Medal, President'sMedal and University Marksman Award. They also regularly participate in the Republic DayParade and the Sthal Sena Camp held in New Delhi each year.

NATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICE (NSS)

The NSS unit of the college organises 7-dayspecial camps every year addressing varioussocial issues. It organizes awarenessprogrammes on diseases like thalassemia,HIV and breast cancer, blood donationcamps and literacy camps. Other NSSactivities include celebration of NationalYouth Day and Environment Day,monitoring of the college cleanliness forthe prevention of diseases and thedistribution of school stationery to needychildren.

STUDENTS' HEALTH HOMEThe Students' Health Home at JagabandhuInstitution, Fern Road, Kol-19, has a longassociation with the college. The studentsmay enroll themselves as members of theHealth Home on payment of a fee of Rs.20/- per session. The student members areoffered the benefit of a whole range ofmedical treatment at subsidised rates. TheStudents' Health Home also organisesblood donation and free eye and healthcheck-up camps and distributes medicinesand spectacles at minimal cost. Theservices of good doctors and social workersare also available here thrice a week after3:00 p.m.

STUDENTS' INSURANCE

Each student of this college is providedwith an accident insurance cover ofminimum Rs.20,000 provided by UnitedIndia Insurance Company on payment of Rs.20 per year.

STUDENTS' UNION

The college has a democratically elected Students' Union. The administrative building of thecollege has a Union Room for the functioning of the Students’Union. It is entrusted withthe task of organizing the Freshers' Welcome, the Annual Sports and the Cultural Festival

with the help of the teachers and staff of the college. Various other extra-curricular activitiesare organised by the Students' Union throughout the year. These include celebration of birthanniversaries of freedom fighters, poets and other famous personalities, organization oftalent competitions, quizzes and debates, celebration of Women’s Day and other specialdays.

SPORTS

The college encourages its students to participate in both inter-College and intra- collegesports events. It is proud to have produced many sports persons who have played at theState, National and International levels and have numerous prizes and awards to theircredit. The Annual Sports is organised by the students' union every year during the wintermonths. Teachers, staff and students enthusiastically participate in the various events.

STUDENTS' AID

The College maintains a Students' Aid Fund to render financial help to the needy students.The benefit of free studentship is extended to meritorious students who come fromeconomically backward or 'Below Poverty Line' families. Tuition fee concessions (full/partial exemption from payment of college fees) are provided to the needy students at thediscretion of the college authorities. Applications for free studentship are assessed on thebasis of family income, performance in the last Board/University Examination andattendance in college classes. Students should apply for free studentship by the 15thDecember every year. For any renewal, attendance and conduct in the college andperformance in examinations are considered. Besides these, there are scholarships formeritorious and financially backward students from various endowment funds. The collegealso carries out the entire online processing of Government scholarships like Kanyashreeand minority students scholarships and ensures that these are made accessible to themaximum number of students.

The college also offers medical and psychological counseling to the students.

The college has special amenities for differently abled students like wheelchairs, ramp andspecial toilets. Both the buildings are provided with elevators.

COLLEGE MAGAZINE

With the help of the Students' Union, the college brings out an Annual Magazine"ANTARIK" in which students are encouraged to contribute poems and short stories, essays,articles and sketches. It is further enriched by contributions from the teachers and staff ofthe college. The Magazine provides an opportunity to showcase the literary talents of itsstudents.

EXTENSION LECTURES

Memorial lectures funded by endowments of past teachers and patrons of the college areorganised each year by the following departments.

• Pratima Sen Memorial lecture - Department of Philosophy.

• Asha Gupta Memorial Lecture - Department of Sanskrit

• Ratna Som Memorial Lecture- Department of Chemistry

Besides these, various students’ seminars, workshops, series of faculty researchdissemination lectures, nature study programmes, and invited talks by eminent scholars infields of science, humanities, art and culture are organized regularly throughout the year.The college has a separate research room in the Administrative Building where the studentsand teachers can work beyond college hours. The college is registered for Information andLibrary Network (INFLIBNET) for downloading articles from e-journals and e-books.

EDUCATIONAL TOURS

Field work and excursions form a compulsory part of the curriculum of the Departmentsof Botany, Geography, Geology, Sociology, and Zoology. Under the supervision of theteachers and staff of these departments, students are taken to various places all over Indiato carry out their field work. Compulsory field work is also organized for all third-year

students of the college as part of the environmental studies course. Industry visits, visitsto rehabilitation centres and internships in media houses are also conducted by somedepartments.

CAREER AND COUNSELLING(I)SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

An HR supervisory skills course isconducted jointly by the department ofCommunicative English and PranavanandaInstitute of Management and Technologyto equip the students with the requisiteskills of office management. The studentslearn about leadership, team building andworking, organizational behavior andmanaging human resource adequately atvarious levels. The course tries to developnot only the necessary skills of speaking,writing and presentation but also tries toorient them towards the needs of theemployment sector.

The Placement Assistance Cell acts as a facilitating body for students passing out from thecollege to find employment in various sectors. Many of our students have foundemployment in reputed companies through campus interviews held in the college.

STUDENTS’ WELFARE CELL

A students’ welfare cell is in place to provide support and counseling to the students invarious matters. An SC/ST/OBC welfare cell has also been constituted to look after theinterests of the SC/ST/OBC students of the college.

GRIEVANCE AND ANTI- RAGGING CELL

The students may express their grievances in writing and drop them in the grievance box

in the ground floor of the academic building of the college. The grievance and anti-raggingcell brings speedy redressal of student complaints and maintains a 100% ragging –freeenvironment.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The college boasts of an impressive ex-student community which includes eminentacademicians and researchers, politicians and administrators, honourable judges of the HighCourt, prominent figures in the world of literature, art and culture, and sportspersonalities.The Alumni Association of our college is coordinated by Smt. Kanika Chatterjee(Secretary). Former Members of Parliament, Smt. Gita Mukherjee, Smt. Purabi Mukherjee,and current M. P. Smt. Shatabdi Roy, former legislator, Smt Maya Banerjee, former V. C. ofRabindra Bharati University, Smt. Bharati Mukherjee, honourable judges of the CalcuttaHigh Court, Justice Bijoya Nag and Justice Padma Khastagir, are ex-students of our college.Jogamaya Devi College is proud to have as its alumni an endless list of prominent figuresin the field of literature and culture including Maitreyee Devi, Smt. Mahasweta Devi, Smt.Karuna Bandyopadhyay, Smt. Bijoya Roy, Smt. Uma Das Gupta, Smt.Bani Ghosal, Smt.Purba Dam, Smt. Bandana Sen, Smt. Sriradha Bandyapadhyay and Smt.Kaushiki ChakrabortyDesikan. Noted danseuse, Smt. Amala Sankar was one of our early students and also achampion in Javelin.

Our alumni also include eminent Sports figures like Poulami Ghatak (table tennis Champion)and Alpana Dam (Mountaineering). One of our students was a member of the NationalCricket team.

PRIZES AND AWARDS

• The Elizabeth Ukkuru Memorial Stipend, Principal Arundhati Sen Memorial Stipendand the Ratna Som Memorial Scholarship are given each year to meritorious studentswho are financially underprivileged.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Students are required to observe discipline and follow the established norms in every matterof the College, both academic and administrative. Good conduct and academic excellenceare the watchwords of the institution.

Students must attend their classes regularly. According to the rules of the University ofCalcutta, students must have 75% attendance or above in each subject for being eligibleto appear in University Examinations. If attendance is above or equal to 60% but below75% in each subject non-collegiate fee is to be paid as per rules. Students having attendancebelow 60% for any reason whatsoever will be treated as discollegiate and will be debarredfrom appearing in the University examination as per Calcutta University rule. No appeal inthis regard will be entertained.

The use of mobile phones outside the common room is prohibited

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY

It is the responsibility of the students to:• Uphold academic integrity in all activities.• Attend classes regularly and punctually.• Complete reading assignments prior to examination and to participate actively in class

discussions.• Adhere to university norms on attendance and academic performance.• Notify the teacher immediately if any difficulty is faced.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• The admission process is fully online.• No change of subject is allowed after the last date for subject change as fixed by the

University.• Fees once paid are not refunded. All Caution Money is refunded on claim on successful

completion of the course.• Any kind of payment is to be made normally at the College cash counter only , duly

filled in the fee book, in triplicate, unless otherwise instructed.• All applications made by the students, must mention the name, roll number, phone

number and class of the student.

• Absence from any college examination should be reported in advance/on date to thePrincipal with documents regarding absence along with the guardian's letter. Theappeal countersigned by the Principal is to be submitted to the College office. Aphotostat copy must be kept by the student. Consideration in such cases is made at thediscretion of the Principal and the Academic Committee.

• Defaulters cannot claim retrospective attendance.

• Students of B.A./B. Sc./B.Com General and Honours classes must clear all dues for thesession and return all Library Books at the end of each academic year, before filling upthe CU Examination Forms.

• A fine of Rs. 2.00 per day per book will be charged for late return of library books.

• Registration forms must be filled in by students of 1st year B.A., B.Sc. or B.Com.(General & Honours) within the time specified by the University.

RULES FOR CAUTION MONEY DEPOSIT REFUND

Caution Money is refunded only once a year between 20th August and 20th September.If a student fails to take back the balance of her caution deposit within 2 years of herleaving college or of completing the particular course, whichever is earlier, the money shallbe forfeited and transferred to the General Fund of the College. No refund of caution moneywill be made in case of loss of fee book.

ADMISSION QUALIFICATIONS

(as laid down in the Calcutta University Notification No. CSR/21/16, Dt. 06.05.16 andrelevant amendments)

A candidate who has passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) or its equivalent examination iseligible to seek admission to the 1st year of the 3-year B.A,/ B.Sc./B.Com. (Hons/ General/Major) or B.Mus. (Hons./General) Course of Studies provided he/she has also passed inEnglish having full marks not being less than 100.

Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) Vocational examinationconducted by the West Bengal State Council of Vocational Education and Training shall be

eligible to seek admission to the B.A. (General/Major) 1st year Course of Studies taking thesubjects under Humanities Division only. However, candidates who have passed theaforesaid H.S. Examination in Business & Commerce shall also be eligible for admission tothe B.Com.(Major) 1st year Course of Studies under this University. However, no candidateshall be allowed for admission after a lapse of more than 5 years from the year of passingthe previous qualifying examination.

A candidate prosecuting a regular course of study for three-year degree course shall haveto clear all the Part-I, II and III examinations in all respect within a span of five years fromthe year of admission to the particular course and combination, failing which he/she shallhave to leave the course subject to fulfillment of following condition.

A candidate who will prosecute a regular course of study for the first year of the three-yearcourse shall have to appear at the Part-I examination within two years from the year ofadmission to the course failing of which he/ she shall have to prosecute a fresh course ofstudy from the first year provided however that such candidate shall not be entitled to seeksuch readmission to the first year class beyond five years of his/her passing the previousqualifying examination.

ADMISSION REGULATION

B.A., B.Sc. and B. Com. Admission Qualification

Students who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2 Course) conducted bythe Higher Secondary Council - West Bengal, or an equivalent examination recognised assuch by the University, with five subjects, including English as one of the languagepapers, carrying not less than 100 marks, may be admitted to the 1st Year Degree Class(General and/or Honours) of the College.

Note that:

(i) A candidate, who appeared but could not obtain pass marks in any requisite subjectat the previous qualifying examination, will not be allowed to take up that subject inthe degree course.

(ii) Norms of C.U. will be followed strictly in admitting students from open schools/correspondence courses.

Students must bring the original mark sheet of the H.S. Examination or equivalent, originalAdmit Cards of both the H.S. and Madhyamik (Secondary) Examination and charactercertificate from the institution wherefrom she passed the last examination, at the time ofadmission. Photo copies of all documents are to be submitted. As per rule of University,Rs. 10/- is to be paid for Registration Form in addition to the Registration Fee.

Students seeking admission to the Second or Third Year class after "break in study" must submittheir application on or before the 31st of July. They will have to produce their Admit Cards, Mark-sheets and Registration Certificate along with their application at the time of admission.

Students who fail to get promotion to the next higher class must take readmission in theexisting class. Admission to Second Year and Third Year classes will not be allowed afterthe specified date as set by the University/College Authority.

No refund can be claimed by the candidates for the fees deposited for provisional admissionto the next higher class.

If any migrating student fails to produce Migration Certificate at the time of admission, shemay be given, at the discretion of the Principal, one month's time to produce it. If theMigration Certificate is not produced within one month from the date of admission, theadmission of the student is liable to be cancelled. All cases like break in study or migrationfrom Board/Council outside West Bengal, or migration from any other University should bebrought to the notice of the Principal before admission.

GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING ADMISSION

• Prospectus and forms will be issued (for admission to the Degree Honours or GeneralCourse) in accordance with eligibility criteria framed by the Academic Committee of theCollege and notified in the Website.

• Those applying for the reserved seats must attach attested photostat copies of caste/tribe or disability certificate from competent authority.

• The receipt of the form with college seal, issued during submission is to be preservedand produced during admission or for any further enquiry.

• A list of candidates selected for admission along with waiting lists will be displayed in

the college website and notice boards. Time schedule notified for admission is to bestrictly followed.

• All admissions are provisional. Such provisional admission is liable to be cancelled ifstudents fail to submit, within one month of admission, relevant documents likemigration certificate, original pass certificate, original marksheet, admit card etc. asrequired by the University/College. If admission of any such candidate is not approvedby the University, she will not be entitled to any refund.

• Selection will be strictly on the basis of merit. However, special consideration will begranted for candidates from fields of sports and culture.

• The College reserves all rights of admission.
