Choosing the right school for your daughter’s secondary education is a life changing decision, and when the decision involves international education it is even more important to make the right choice. National statistics on education show clearly that in an educational environment dedicated entirely to young women, the girls will outperform students in any other educational setting. National examination results are well above the national average, and each year the school strives to maintain and improve the high standards which have been set.

A Special Place for your Daughter

Tauranga Girls’ College offers a warm welcome to all international students looking for a quality educational experience in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. Tauranga, a city of approximately 100,000 people, is famous for sun, sea, surf and horticulture and provides a happy balance between large city amenities and the relaxed lifestyle of provincial New Zealand. Tauranga is conveniently located just two and a half hours’ drive by car from Auckland International Airport and is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing and most dynamic centres.

Like the city, Tauranga Girls’ College is also growing, providing us with the opportunity to develop and enhance our International Students’ programme to meet the diverse needs of your daughters and to ensure that every student has the opportunity to have an enjoyable, satisfying and academically rewarding experience. Tauranga Girls’ College roll currently includes students studying with us from many different countries, including Brazil, Chile, mainland China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The college provides a wide-ranging curriculum of academic and vocationally based subjects as well as many choices of activities to develop the skills and confidence of the young women in our care. We are proud of the number of students who experience national and international success in a wide range of cultural and sporting opportunities as well as achieve academically.

Because of the desirable life-style in the region, Tauranga Girls’ College has no difficulty in attracting highly qualified, dedicated teaching staff, and this is a real strength of the school. Students benefit from the professionalism of staff who are keen to see their students achieve to the best of their ability.

Pastoral Care & HomestayUpon arrival at Auckland International Airport your daughter will be met by a school representative and transported to Tauranga where she will be settled into her homestay accommodation. An Orientation Programme will be provided which allows her to meet other students and learn about her new school and be as confident as possible in her new environment before she joins her classmates for this exciting part of her life.

The Director of International Students, Mrs Julie Sommerville, oversees all aspects of your daughter’s education and gives her support and advice when she has personal or academic concerns. The Director, in consultation with the ESOL teacher, Mrs Robin Blair, and the year level deans, is able to guide her academic choices. The Homestay Co-ordinator, Mrs Anne Robinson, works to ensure the Homestay experience is a pleasant one. Our Guidance Counsellors are available to work with your daughter. Their experience and ability to provide support in a wide range of situations and issues is extensive.

Our Careers Advisor provides career information for your daughter through seminars, pamphlets, interviews and our computer career database. Students also have access to the school nurse.

Homestay accommodation for your daughter is carefully selected by our Homestay Co-ordinator and must comply with regulations set down in the International Students’ Code of Practice. It is a condition of enrolment that the student stay in a homestay arranged by the school unless she is living with a parent or legal guardian. On enrolment, your daughter will complete a homestay application and her preferences will be taken into account when selecting her homestay. Every endeavour is made to meet these preferences.

Homestay parents will assist your daughter with all aspects of settling into her new life here. They can help with purchasing school uniform and stationery requirements, setting up bank accounts and attending after school sports and cultural activities if required. They can also help to familiarise her with suitable places for personal shopping.

At Tauranga Girls’ College, we have a wonderful group of caring and supportive homestay families who work with the school to ensure that your daughter is well cared for and happy in her new home.

Tauranga Girls’ College expects that students are reasonably proficient in the English Language in order to study at the school, and evidence of this is a requirement of enrolment. Students are tested on their English Language ability upon arrival and placed in the class most suited to their needs. Ongoing assessment is done to check progress and as English ability grows a broader curriculum is offered.

A Pre-Intermediate level of English is suitable for study at a junior level and students applying for senior levels should have a higher level of English. As appropriate, extra ESOL classes may be offered for students who need extra English language assistance.

Teacher aides are also available to go into class with your daughters if necessary. This can be especially helpful when students are first settling into their new school and are still building confidence.

ESOL classes are provided at every level for students for whom English is their second language.

Students may attend these classes as well as mainstreamed classes in a variety of subjects. ESOL classes have small numbers of girls to allow for individual tuition.

Senior students are trained for the IELTS examination as well as NCEA. Cambridge and TOEFL examinations can be catered for if required. There is no extra charge for these courses, apart from examination fees.

At Tauranga Girls’ College, active participation is encouraged from which our young women may gain confidence and a sense of achievement. Throughout her College years, your daughter will be able to extend her talent or find new interests.

Team activities all require an ability to concentrate on individual performance that combines to achieve the goals of the team.

Commitment, loyalty, affirmation, encouragement, co-operation, affinity and fair play are all qualities to be developed through the team.

Service activities require our young women to give their time in support of others. Many opportunities are available through peer coaching, peer tutoring, coaching sport, Library, Health Centre service, hosting our visitors and representing our College at community functions.

With the community as our partner, we encourage our young women to participate fully in their secondary school years and amongst their peer group at College, local, regional and national levels. Beyond College such opportunities can become more obscure and extremely difficult to access without some experience. Tauranga Girls’ College has a great deal to offer your daughter.

The profile of international students at Tauranga Girls’ College has grown significantly over the last few years. Since the inaugural International Students’ Concert in �00�, this event has become an annual highlight of the Tauranga Girls’ College Arts Festival. Something special about being at school in another country is the friendships the girls make with other students from all over the world, as well as from within New Zealand. At Tauranga Girls’ College we encourage students to form lasting friendships through our buddy system, by helping students to join activities with other students and by encouraging teachers to sit international students with supportive and friendly New Zealand students within their class.

The friendships the girls form in this time with us may last a lifetime and it is always a delight to see girls from many different nationalities sitting together and talking in the language they share: English.

I arrived in New Zealand seven weeks ago and I’m enjoying it a lot because the kiwi girls and the teachers are very welcoming and helpful to us international students. We can go to the teachers any time, or to the international block to see Mrs Sommerville, Mrs Robinson or Mrs Blair if we have a problem or a question. My friends and I have benefited from lots of new experiences and we like it very much at TGC.

In �00�, Mrs Nan Kingston-Smith, Head of Guidance and long-time facilitator for international students at Tauranga Girls’ College, opened the International Students’ Centre. Situated in the middle of the campus, the International Students’ Centre has a long verandah to enable students to sit outside in the shade while having their morning tea or lunch, chatting to friends from all over the world. Facilities include a fully equipped ESOL classroom, with 1� computers for class

and lunchtime use; a study room with full classroom facilities including three computers for contacting family and friends, and a casual area with comfortable furniture to enable students to relax. In this building there is also a kitchen for student use with a microwave and dishwasher, and toilet and office facilities. We are delighted to have this facility available, and the girls make good use of the ISC.

UniformsEvery student attending the College agrees on enrolment to wear the uniform fully and correctly. The manner in which our students present themselves for daily work reflects their sense of pride. To maintain personal status and high standards for our College, it is important that all our students are well presented.

Students should apply using the enrolment packs available from the school (contact Mrs Julie Sommerville at [email protected], or using the phone, fax or postal addresses provided) or download forms from our website, www.tgc.school.nz.

The completed forms may be faxed or posted to the school. Please ensure that all documentation requested, e.g. school reports, testimonials, are provided.

Your application will be assessed, and if successful, you will be sent a letter containing a provisional offer of place, and an invoice for the fees.

Fees should be paid into the school bank account as provided and the school notified that the payment has been made.

When the fees have been paid, the school will issue a full Offer of Place document plus a receipt for the fees. These documents are required for your student visa.

When you have your visa, and your travel plans have been made, the school should be notified.

If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Accident InsuranceThe Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Medical and Travel InsuranceInternational students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.
