The Prostate Cancer Canada Network(formerly the Canadian Prostate CancerNetwork) amalgamated with ProstateCancer Canada in 2009, with a goalof reaching out to a wider audience
of support groups in Canada andproviding enhanced support resourcesfor men (and their families) diagnosedwith the disease. The Network hasbeen serving Canadian men and theirfamilies for over 15 years.

KEY MESSAGES
Working in partnership with supportgroups across Canada, the Network:
helps individuals and their families
understand and cope with prostatecancer by providing up-to-dateinformation and individual peer-to-peer support.
provides men and their families an
opportunity to share their experiencesand stories.
promotes the importance of early
detection through public awarenesscampaigns.
distributes information to prostatecancer groups across the countryinterested in learning more about
the disease, and making informeddecisions.
lobbies for increased funding forprostate cancer research, treatment
and programs.
The Network represents affiliated
support groups in Canada and eachone works independently. They provideservices at the grass root level, throughmonthly peer meetings, specialeducational events, outreach programsand presentations to service clubs,community health fairs and more.While some groups are very small andsome very large, the common thread
that ties them all together is anoverwhelming desire to help educatemen about the need for early detectionand to ease the journey for those

diagnosed. Our group members andleaders do not give medical informationbut freely share their own stories.They participate in discussions facilitatedby medical experts, and share
knowledge about treatment optionsand advances. It is through this bondingand knowledge building that menare empowered to feel part of asurvivors community and get a senseof personal responsibility.
Most PCCN support groups meetmonthly, while others meet morefrequently. Partners and familymembers are welcome at generalmeetings, but some groups chooseto hold separate meetings for their
partners to encourage opportunitiesfor sharing personal feelings, reactionsand experiences, dealing with burnout
and other related issues as they copewith this disease.
