I am pleased to report that the

Pirtek Fishing Challenge continues to grow from strength to strength. This

year, on Sunday 23 March, more than 8,500 anglers participated in the catch-and-release competition, with proceeds from the $20 entry fee generously donated to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).

We are also delighted to be partnering with safety footwear manufacturer Steel Blue on their exciting Blue Boot campaign. Steel Blue’s new safety boot, the Southern Cross, has been released in a special blue edition to support PCFA and beyondblue. In addition to raising funds, we hope that the campaign will bring an awareness message to thousands of Australians and encourage men over 50, or 40 with a family history, to talk to their doctor about prostate cancer as part of their annual health check. For more details visit the website www.blueboots.steelblue.com.au.

In May we launched three new leaflets What you need to know about prostate cancer, Support groups for people affected by prostate cancer and Caring for someone with prostate cancer. The leaflets are intended for use at public awareness events. We also launched the Advanced Prostate Cancer pack, the latest in our series of resources for men and their families who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Advanced Prostate Cancer Pack was developed as part of Supporting men with prostate cancer through evidence-based resources and support, a Cancer Australia initiative funded by the Australian Government, and complements the Localised Prostate Cancer pack.Later this year we will be launching resources for gay and bisexual man, younger men and partners and carers. To obtain a free copy of any of our resources please visit our website www.pcfa.org.au or call PCFA’s National Office on 1800 220 099.

Around the country

Mates Relay a runaway success The 2014 Aglime of Australia Mates 500 Relay covered 1500 km over 11 days, star ting in Mukinbudin and ending in Manjimup on 3 April 2014, passing through over 40 around 23 towns and shires in the Wheatbelt and Lower South West of WA.

Six runners from a team of 14 were on the road at any one time. As well as spreading the word about men’s health in regional areas, the event raised well over the $120,000 for the Regional Men’s Health Initiative (RMHI) and PCFA.

Guest speakers at evening functions during the event included David Parkin and Glen Jakovich.

Queensland’s largest stubby cooler collectionAs the owner and operator of funeral homes, cemeteries and crematoria in Australia, new Zealand and Singapore, InvoCare is well known for its commitment to the community.

It recently joined forces with the local community in Queensland to attempt a world record for the largest stubby cooler collection – and raised much needed funds for PCFA at the same time.

“Most of us have a stubby holder lurking in a drawer or at the back of a cupboard that we were given and rarely use,” said Matt Hansen, InvoCare’s QLD Regional Manager, Funerals. “So we asked people to donate them, along with a gold coin, to raise funds for PCFA.”

As a result, almost $7,000 was raised.

Money rolls in for PCFA SA and NTFrom large corporate events to small scale community fundraisers, our supporters in South Australia and the northern Territory are working overtime to achieve a good result this year for PCFA.

The money from moneyboxes at Subway stores keeps rolling in, as do the contributions from The Good Guys. The Australian Hotels Association is rolling out a unique fundraiser called ‘Bottoms Up’, referring the classic Aussie toast, in hotels in metropolitan and rural hotels across the state.

Adelaide enjoyed its first ‘Whisky Live’ promotion in April. The heritage Bonython Hall at Adelaide University provided a suitably baronial venue and hundreds of enthusiasts tasted more than 100 whiskies, with PCFA running a very successful raffle.

The Thiess mining team at Prominent Hill have donned prostate blue hi-vis shirts as a fundraiser for PCFA-SA, while the RAAF and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure are dressing down on Casual Fridays with donations to PCFA.

Superlife’s super donationThe Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustee’s charitable foundation “Superlife” has been a major supporter of PCFA over the past nine years.

At their annual Conference of Major Super Funds (CMSF) on the Gold Coast, a golf day, silent auction and raffle are held to raise funds for PCFA, the national Breast Cancer Foundation and “Superfriends”. This year’s result of just over $14,000 to support PCFA’s activities was another great achievement. We are thrilled to be associated with such a proud and giving organisation.

Furthermore we would like to give a big thank you to everyone involved in the ‘Male Bag Ride’ around Tasmania, Pedal 4 Prostate’. This bike ride from Adelaide to Geelong saw outstanding results in fundraising.

Special thanks to the Bairnsdale region for generous donations to the ‘Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch’ and ‘Peel cruises’, as well as the support from the annual ‘Simon’s Ball’ and Devonport north Rotary Club’s golf day.

Meet the researcher

Dr Shahneen Sandhu, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, VictoriaDr Shahneen Sandhu is a clinician researcher with an interest in translating advances in cancer research into improvements in the diagnosis and care of patients with prostate cancer and melanoma.

With the aid of PCFA’s prestigious John Mills Young Investigator Grant, Shahneen is planning an impor tant trial which will identify patients with prostate cancers that harbour underlying defective genes, and then exploit those defects to kill tumour cells.

First patients will be screened for defects in their genes, including the BRCA1/2 mutations. Those who do have these defects will be invited to par ticipate in a phase II clinical trial of a new drug BMn-673, a PARP inhibitor, that works by inhibiting cancer cells’ ability to repair their DnA and therefore to survive.

Shahneen is a medical oncologist at the Uro-oncology and Melanoma Units at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. She studies the biological mechanisms that lead to aggressive forms of prostate cancer, identifies new targets for drug therapy, runs clinical trials to test new drugs, and is working towards implementing a program for personalised cancer

treatment in both prostate cancer and melanoma.

She studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and worked at the Peter Mac before moving to the United Kingdom in 2007 to work as a medical oncology consultant in the Melanoma Unit at the Royal Marsden nHS Foundation Trust for 12 months. She subsequently joined the Royal Marsden Hospital/ Institute of Cancer Research’s Drug Development Unit and Prostate Unit in 2008.

Her impressive research in the UK involved designing and conducting multiple trials of promising new drugs and, later, developing new biomarkers and therapeutics for castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Shahneen returned to Australia in 2012 to continue her work as an oncologist at Peter Mac and pursue her passion for research into prostate cancer. She was named the top Young Investigator in PCFA’s 2013 funding round.

Shahneen is planning an important trial which will identify patients with prostate cancers that harbour underlying defective genes, and then exploit those defects to kill tumour cells.

WA Ambassadors trained to spread the word on prostate cancerPCFA Ambassadors are enthusiastic and passionate advocates for prostate cancer awareness who work tirelessly to promote men’s health in their state.

In April, PCFA held a training workshop for new Ambassadors in WA. Participants practised their public speaking skills, learned how to motivate others through their own experience with prostate cancer, and networked with existing Ambassadors.

There are now 20 trained Ambassadors in WA, stretching from Geraldton down to Albany. They have recently spent several days educating Rotarians about prostate cancer at the Rotary

District 9455 Conference in Perth, and have delivered presentations at Men’s Sheds, a homeless shelter, and various corporate events.

More training sessions are planned in all states and territories over the course of the year.

If you would like to host an Ambassador at your workplace or club, in WA or nationwide, please contact [email protected]. Ambassadors are available to speak in all states and territories on the importance of prostate cancer awareness and men’s health.

AWArENESS

Working together to bring Xofigo to Australia Over the past few months, PCFA has reached out to the prostate cancer community nationwide to participate in an advocacy campaign regarding prostate cancer drug radium 223 (Xofigo).

Xofigo is a new radiation treatment for bone metastases for men with castration-resistant prostate cancer. It is injected into the blood, making its way to the bone, and can selectively target cancer cells while minimising damage to surrounding healthy cells. As advanced prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Australian men, the availability of this drug may provide a better quality of life for many men and their families.

Xofigo has been approved for use in the USA, but is not yet available in Australia. The prostate cancer community has been writing letters of support for Xofigo and sending them to their local MPs as well as Australia’s Medical Services Advisory Committee. The community response has been very positive, with individuals, friends and family members, and Support Groups taking the time to draft letters.

Together, PCFA hopes that we can make this drug accessible to men throughout Australia, and we acknowledge and thank everyone who has contributed to this campaign.

Prostate cancer information to meet the needs of Australian gay and bisexual men

Even though there are a lot of information resources for people affected by prostate cancer, few meet the needs of gay and bisexual men.

Studies commissioned by PCFA have shown that there aren’t enough information resources specifically for gay and bisexual men because the contents, language and images used in existing resources are usually aimed at heterosexual men. This is a concern, as gay and bisexual men are more likely than heterosexual men to face prostate cancer because one or both partners in a same-sex relationship could be diagnosed.

PCFA wants to meet the needs of gay and bisexual men with prostate cancer. It has established five support groups specifically for gay and bisexual men in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. More gay and bisexual

men support groups are now also established in Darwin and Hobart.

PCFA has also developed a set of resources for gay and bisexual men that provide information on a range of issues relating to prostate cancer specifically written and designed for this group of men. These resources are written in plain non-medical language to inform them of the diagnostic process, potential impact of prostate cancer and treatment on their social and sexual lives, as well as support and wellbeing issues following diagnosis and treatment.

You can read more about the studies and the findings in the monograph –

Prostate cancer information needs of Australian gay and bisexual men. This is available on the PCFA website (under ‘Publications’) www.pcfa.org.au or for a hard copy, please contact Tim Wong on 02 9438 7025.

These resources are all free. You can download them from our website or order them in hard copy by either filling in the online form on our website or by contacting PCFA on 1800 990 00 22.

Targeted new resources for men with prostate cancer, their partners and familiesSince the release of PCFA’s highly successful Localised Prostate Cancer pack, we have produced a new information pack for men with advanced prostate cancer, the Advanced Prostate Cancer pack.

We have been busily working on other resources. In line with the Localised Prostate Cancer and Advanced Prostate Cancer packs, other information packs specifically for younger men with prostate cancer, gay and bisexual men with prostate cancer and partners and carers of men with prostate cancer will be available towards the end of this year.

We are working on separate resources on urinary issues following treatment, wellbeing issues, and surgery for treating prostate cancer.

There is also a new booklet called Understanding Prostate Cancer for people who want to find out more about the disease as well as three new leaflets that have replaced the Be a Man and Caring for and Supporting Men Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer leaflets. They are:

• What you need to know about prostate cancer

• Support groups for people affected by prostate cancer

• Caring for someone with prostate cancer

HEALTH PrOgrAMS & NUrSINg

Expansion of Prostate Cancer Specialist

nursing ServiceFourteen additional Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses will be located in sites around Australia from August 2014, bringing to 26 the total number of nurses providing help to men in metropolitan and regional centres nationally.

The site selection for this extended Prostate Cancer Specialist nursing Service was recently completed. A total of 35 applications were received and these sites reviewed and shortlisted using criteria agreed with the Department of Health. In total, 17 sites were shortlisted and visited over a period of four weeks. Once the visits were finished, the 14 sites were selected and approved by the Department of Health.

PCFA has finalised all the contracts with the selected sites and an announcement about where these additional nurses will be located will follow shortly. Local recruitment of the nurses can then commence. We anticipate that all additional 14 nurses will be in position by August 2014, when the extended service will be formally launched with a training event for the new nurses.

Meanwhile, we were delighted to be invited to 2014 Singapore Cancer society UROFAIR conference. Lisa Ferri attended on behalf of the team and reports on the meeting below:

UROFAIR 2014 Singapore Nursing Symposium

In March this year I was invited by PCFA to attend the Singapore

Cancer Society nursing Symposium to present three papers on the development and role of the PCFA’s Prostate Cancer Specialist nursing Service.

The theme of the UROFAIR 2014 conference was ‘Changing Paradigms in Urology’ and the nursing Symposium focused entirely on prostate cancer and supportive care.

Prostate cancer in Singapore is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, with approximately 500-600 cases annually. The pilot of the Prostate Cancer Specialist nursing Service has generated much interest.

The organisers were keen for PCFA to present the model of the Prostate Cancer Specialist nurse and also the role of the Prostate Cancer Specialist nurse at practice level.

The Symposium was very well attended, with more than 175 nurses registered, and I received many interested enquiries for resources and information.

In the days following the symposium I had the opportunity to meet many of the nurses again during field trips to three of the major Singaporean Hospitals for fur ther discussions and

shared experiences. I also attended two lively support group meetings of the Walnut Warriors and the Tan Tok Seng Hospital support group, who were very keen to learn of the supportive services and resources we have in Australia.

It was a wonderful experience and I am grateful to the Singapore nurses and the support group members who provided such a warm welcome.

Professional Development Grants

PCFA is providing Australian nurses with more opportunities to expand their skills and advance their knowledge in prostate cancer care through a variety of educational and conference grants.

We envisage that suppor ting nurses in their professional development will increase their knowledge and exposure to best practice management and suppor t of men with prostate cancer - ultimately improving the quality of care provided to these men.

So far this year PCFA has suppor ted five registered nurses to attend the Australasia and new Zealand Urological nurses Annual

Scientific meeting, which was held in Brisbane in March. Three nurses have been given the oppor tunity to advance their knowledge and skills in the field of prostate cancer nursing, by receiving financial assistance from PCFA to enrol in a post-graduate prostate nursing care module provided through La Trobe University.

Five registered nurses also have the oppor tunity to attend the

2014 Australasia and New Zealand Urological and Prostate Cancer Trial Group scientific meeting, which will be held in July.

Also still open for applications are Cancer nursing Society of Australia Conference and Asia-Pacific Prostate Cancer Conference Grant. For more information and details of how to apply please go to www.pcfa.org.au.

SUPPOrT

Our Thriving Support networkThere has been significant activity within the Support Network over the past three months, including the establishment of a number of new support groups across Australia to assist people dealing with prostate cancer. New groups have been established in Sydney, the Central Coast, Taree and Perth.

A key continuing aspect of PCFA’s support strategy is

its focus on diversity. Throughout March, April and May, PCFA hosted two gay and bisexual men’s health forums in Canberra and Lismore, with a focus on raising awareness about prostate cancer in these communities and exploring the establishment of support groups and other support options for gay and bisexual men dealing with prostate cancer. Work is also progressing in Tasmania, with local organisations to explore support options for gay and bisexual men with prostate cancer.

PCFA would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work of Greg Millan, who has worked collaboratively with PCFA over the past two years to establish gay and bisexual support groups across Australia. With Greg’s help we have been able to establish gay and bisexual support groups in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin and Western Australia.

In Western Australia and South Australia, exercise-based activity groups, in collaboration with exercise physiologists, have recently affiliated with PCFA. The establishment of these innovative groups is an acknowledgement that men seek support in different ways and that standard face-

to-face groups are not always favoured by men. Engaging in an activity such as exercise, allows men to take some control over their health and can be an empowering experience for men dealing with prostate cancer.

Work is continuing to establish specific groups for our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities across Australia. We now have three key resources, which will be published in five community languages, Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic. These resources will be invaluable in assisting PCFA to work with various CALD communities across Australia

to establish support for people dealing with prostate cancer.

PCFA has also been very busy with a range of awareness events in Melbourne on 25 March and more recently in Sydney on 26 May. Both these events drew large crowds of over 200 people. A wide range of medical and allied health professionals presented at both events, and many of those who attended expressed interest in the work of PCFA’s Support Groups. Both of these events were supported by many members of our network, the majority of whom are volunteers, who dedicate countless hours to progressing the mission of PCFA.

10

Page 11: Prostate News - ISSUE 57 / July 2014

PCFA Training Conferences PCFA has held two of the five Chapter-based training conferences planned for 2014 to build the capacity of our Support Group Leaders to facilitate their support groups.

These were for the nSW/ACT Chapter (29 – 30 March) and the Central Chapter (21 – 22 May). Both conferences were very successful and feedback so far has been very positive. The overarching theme of the conferences is “Engaging with Diversity across our Support network”. The conferences are providing a space for colleagues to connect with each other, enhance their knowledge and skills and develop their relationships with other PCFA colleagues. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed and supported the conference.

Union for International Cancer Control World Cancer Congress – December 3 – 6 2014 MelbourneHeld every two years, the World Cancer Congress is the leading international conference on cancer. Hosted by one of the most influential UICC members, Cancer Council Australia, the 2014 Congress will take place from the 3 to 6 of December 2014 in Melbourne, welcoming more than 2,500 participants from 150 countries – from practitioners, to cancer control experts, advocates and consumers.

PCFA is proud to be participating in the Congress and is playing a key role with the launch of the public consultation of the national clinical guidelines on PSA testing, which are being developed by a group of national medical experts together with PCFA and Cancer Council Australia. PCFA will be hosting two sessions – a breakfast and lunch session to launch the consultation process. Several abstracts showcasing the work of PCFA and the development and provision of support for people dealing with cancer are also being presented. All of our friends and supporters’ are invited to network in the exhibition space, known as the Global Village and to attend the final day of the congress, which is specifically designed for consumers.

Volunteer Month – May 2014PCFA would like to acknowledge the many volunteers for their work to progress the vision and mission of PCFA.

The dedication and commitment of all of our volunteers have been vital factors in the progress that PCFA has made in recent years. Much of this volunteer effort is from members of our support network, who spend countless hours in the delivery of information and awareness events to members of the community and in supporting others dealing with prostate cancer, either in a group setting or one-on-one.

Thank you to everyone, as we work together to reduce the impact of prostate cancer on the community.

2014 PIRTEK Fishing Challenge broke all recordsThe Challenge continues to grow year after year. More than 8,500 anglers participated in the 2014 catch-and-release fishing event which was held on Sunday 23 March 2014. It was the largest fishing competition that PIRTEK has hosted since the competition began in 2009.

All registered anglers were on the hunt for 21 target species which were spread across the country for a chance to win a total of 126 prizes. This year’s Challenge offered a total of $155,000 in cash and prizes.

Stephen Dutton, Pirtek Fluid Systems CEO, joined anglers over the competition weekend.

“I was overwhelmed with the support the Challenge received this year. I spent the day with friends fishing and celebrating what is now a calendar event in the Australian fishing scene. It’s amazing to see so many anglers getting behind the challenge and doing their part to support Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia,” said Mr Dutton.

Proceeds from the $20 entry fee for each competitor have been generously donated to PCFA to further support our research and awareness programs. PCFA is truly grateful to the PIRTEK team for their tremendous support and for encouraging men, women and entire communities to talk about prostate cancer.

Plans are already well underway for the 2015 challenge where we will be hoping to reach the milestone of 10,000 participants. So please tell your friends and family to register and help us fight a fish to fight prostate cancer.

Blue Boots for Men’s HealthPCFA is delighted to be partnering with Steel Blue on their exciting Blue Boot campaign.

Steel Blue is Australia’s largest and leading safety footwear manufacturer.

Steel Blue’s new safety boot, the Southern Cross, has been released in a special blue edition with $10 from each pair sold donated to PCFA and beyondblue.

Lending a hand, or a boot, to raise awareness for these deserving charities brings Steel Blue one step closer to its goal of helping the health and wellbeing of all workers.

“Both Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue play such a vital role within the Australian community and we are privileged to be working with them to help achieve their goals for men’s health. At Steel Blue, we pride ourselves on

continuously working towards raising awareness on health and safety in key industries, and promoting proper foot care and full body health,” said Ross Fitzgerald, Steel Blue General Manager of Sales.

The Blue Boots campaign will not only raise vital funds for PCFA’s research, awareness and support programs, but it will bring our prostate cancer message to thousands of Australians. We hope it will act as a reminder to Australian men, particularly those aged 50 years and over, to talk to their doctor about being tested as part of their annual health check. The blue boot will be available in Safety in June and non-Safety in October. To purchase a pair of blue boots, visit blueboots.steelblue.com.au and you will find a workwear store near you.
