Annual Report 2009-2010

P R O T E C T I N G O U R L A N D F O R

future generations

This fiscal year has been one of great successes for Triangle Land Conservancy, reflecting the commitment of our donors, volunteers and staff to TLC’s critical mission for our region. In addition, it has been a year of great challenges, which are inevitable in the tough economy that we have all faced.

The most extraordinary success is the completion of the Our Water, Our Land capital campaign – which began three years ago – at just over $5.5 million raised for on-going conservation and stewardship of important lands in the Triangle. What an amazing commitment to conservation by our members! And we haven’t been waiting until the end of the campaign to begin this important work. The $4 million Pearson Stewart Land Opportunity Fund has already leveraged $30 million in public and other private investment in over 3,000 acres and 13 miles of streams focused on the important conservation benefits that TLC seeks to provide the region: • Safeguarding clean water; • Keeping local farms and food in the Triangle; • Protecting habitat for native animals and plants; and, • Connecting people with nature.

Our most significant conservation success this year is the acquisition of the Brumley tract in Orange County, a 613-acre area of critical watershed and natural habitat. An investment from the Our Water, Our Land (OWOL) campaign was the critical catalyst to the acquisition, but in the end we brought funds together from private and public sources – and returned 100% of the OWOL funds to be used for future conservation. In addition, two examples of our focus on locally produced food are the formation of an agricultural partnership with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle at TLC’s J. Logan and Elinor Moore Irvin Nature Preserve and purchase of a conservation easement on the first organic farm in North Carolina, ensuring its continued use for farming in the future. Overall, TLC conserved 1,312 acres this year for the benefit of the Triangle region.

The challenges presented by our economy have meant unwelcome changes at TLC. We are doing more with less – and we thank our staff for their commitment to TLC’s mission through tough times. You will note that our financial statements reflect a net deficit for the first time in many years, which caused us to call on reserves set aside for just this kind of tough time. Know that we are budgeting more carefully than ever and appreciate our members’ commitment to continued support of TLC’s Annual Fund.

It is our members who have created and sustained the vision that TLC works daily to realize - a region with clean water and wildlife habitat, markets filled with locally produced food and beautiful natural places for all of us to enjoy. Our work is only possible because of your commitment to our conservation mission.

On behalf of TLC’s Board of Directors and staff, thank you for your support of Triangle Land Conservancy.

Anne Stoddard Chairman. TLC Board of Directors

From the Chairman

THE BIRD’S-EYE VIEWTLC continues to adjust its focus from how many acres of land we conserve to a focus on what benefits our conservation land provides our community. We are still proud of the number of acres we have conserved, and certainly we will continue to work toward con-serving more and more of them. However, we have also developed partnerships and pursued other projects to expand upon the benefits our conserved land offers to the community.

For example, TLC is providing use of its good agricultural soils at the J. Logan and Elinor Moore Irvin Nature Preserve to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle to grow food in the Healthy Choices Garden. Since we have productive soil, we are putting it to use feeding our community.

The Irvin Nature Preserve is also ideally suited to connecting children with the diversity and wonder of the natural world, as proven by the Irvin Learning Farm and its staff. Over the past two years, with grant support from the Oak Foundation, the Grable Foundation and the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, Irvin Learning Farm has reached an ever-expanding number of children with innovative, hands-on, outdoor learning experiences.

TLC is also working to provide places for people to connect with nature by developing more nature preserves. Work is underway at Horton Grove to complete trails making it easily accessible and full of opportunities to engage with nature.

TLC continues to be a conservation leader in the Triangle, facilitating gatherings for stakeholders throughout the region to discuss issues and collaborate on projects. The annual Regional Conservation Summit is a case in point of TLC bringing people to the table to work together toward conserving the Triangle’s most important places.

The Chatham Conservation Partnership, founded by TLC and several other organiza-tions, continues to influence conservation in Chatham County on a level TLC could never achieve on its own. The group is currently working to create an innovative new tool, the Comprehensive Conserva-tion Plan, to help with land protection and development decisions in Chatham County. Once completed, this plan will be the first of its kind created in North Carolina.

And, just as we have been for 27 years, TLC is still providing the Triangle with clean water, wildlife habitat, local farms and food, and places for people to connect with nature in every acre of land we conserve.

UPPER NEUSE CLEAN WATER INITIATIVEThrough this multi-organization initiative, TLC and partners are conserving land along streams and wetlands in the Upper Neuse watershed to protect nine drinking water supplies, including Falls Lake, that together serve more than a half-million people. For TLC, the area includes our former Little River Priority Area, where we still focus our work while seeking partnership opportunities with local and county government agencies, and conservation nonprofits in other areas.

South Lowell WoodsHildegard Ryals, a longtime conservation leader in Durham, donated a conservation easement on a 59-acre hardwood forest in northern Durham County. Conservation of the Ryals tract provides clean water by protecting 2,800 feet on both sides of a stream that feeds into the North Fork of the Little River. The tract’s mature hard-wood forests play a critical role in filtering nutrients and sediments in the upper reaches of the watershed. The forest, identified as a Wildlife Movement Corridor in Durham’s 2001 Little River Corridor Open Space Plan, also protects wildlife habitat.

Little River Gorge SlopesTLC also accepted the donation of a conservation easement on 22 acres on the Little River in Durham that conserves part of the Little River Gorge natural area.

Valley Springs WoodsSusan and George Beischer donated a conservation easement on 70 acres adjacent to the Eno River State Park in western Durham County. With a generational tradition in development and land owner-ship, the Beischer family has generously agreed to donate the property to TLC within five years.

This project is novel in the way TLC secured the conservation easement, and ultimately the entire parcel. Durham’s Stormwater Ordinance requires land developers to mitigate the impacts of stormwater, and for developers who cannot mitigate on-site, Durham’s ordinance allows the mitigation of alternate sites, known as “land banking.” Through land banking, the Beischer property has been assigned roughly 80 credits by Durham based on its ability to mitigate for other developments. The Beischer family will sell these credits to other developers to mitigate for construction disturbances on Durham land that is critical for water supplies.

Conservation of Valley Springs Woods provides the Triangle community with clean water by protecting a stream filled with water that eventually empties into Falls Lake, the drinking water source for half a million Triangle residents. This project also protects a Natural Heritage Site that provides important wildlife habitat.

3

Greenwald Lewis and Olive Greenwald donated a conservation easement on 56 acres in western Orange County. Conservation of the property provides clean water, wildlife habitat and local farms and food. The water in an unnamed stream running through the property eventually empties into Falls Lake and the drinking water taps of more than 500,000 Triangle residents. As part of two Orange County significant natural heritage sites, protection of this property provides important wildlife habitat.

Brumley Forest TLC purchased the second-largest remaining undeveloped parcel in Orange County, a 613-acre expanse of forest that fewer than 20 years ago was being considered for a major planned community development. It will become one of TLC’s newest public nature preserves.

TLC purchased the property for less than half the appraised value through a generous bargain sale price from the seller, The Zeist Foundation, as well as backbone funding from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund; the Warner Foundation; City of Raleigh; Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative; and the Pearson Stewart Land Opportunity Fund established though TLC’s recent Our Water, Our Land capital campaign.

George and Julia Brumley of Chapel Hill had owned the land since the late 1980s. George Brumley III was a TLC board member in 2003 when a plane carrying him and Julia, their two children and several other family members crashed into a mountainside in Kenya, killing all on board. After their deaths, the land was passed to The Zeist Foundation, an Atlanta-based family foundation started by George Brumley’s father.

Conservation of the Brumley Nature Preserve benefits the Triangle community in three ways: by protecting wildlife habitat, connecting people with nature and by safeguarding clean water.

COMMUNITY LANDS

Flower Hill (Lewis) TLC purchased eight acres for addition to the Flower Hill Nature Preserve in eastern Johnston County, nearly doubling the size of the preserve. Separated from the preserve by one tract about 670 feet wide, the additional acreage lies entirely within the Flower Hill/Moccasin Creek Bluffs significant natural heritage area. TLC is seeking permission from adjacent landowners to extend the preserve trail network. Conservation of this land provides clean water by protecting the Moccasin Creek watershed, a significant aquatic habitat and a major tributary of Buckhorn Reservoir, the water source for the city of Wilson. Conservation of this property also protects the wildlife corridor along Moccasin Creek.

WORKING LANDSHolding Family Lands Since 2003, TLC has been working with the Holding family to conserve their family farm in Johnston County along Buffalo Creek. This year, 80 acres were added to this conservation effort, for a total of 681 acres of their farm. The land added contains areas of hardwood forest, loblolly pine plantations and open fields used for cultivating tobacco and soybeans. One unnamed tributary of Buffalo Creek flows through the property and is surrounded by small wetland areas. Conservation of this property provides the community with wildlife habitat, clean water, and local farms and food.

Hidden Spring Farm Bill and Sarah Atkinson donated a conserva-tion easement on 83 acres of their Hidden Spring Farm. With nearly equal acres of land in pasture and forest, the Atkinson’s daughter, Jean Joyner, manages an equestrian boarding and riding facility on the property. Conservation of this farm provides the community with local farms and food.

Buffalo Ridge Farm Joe and Frances Moore donated a conservation easement on their 132-acre Buffalo Ridge Farm north of Selma. This easement protects a portion of Buffalo Creek, a major tributary of the Little River. The Little River is considered to be a significant stream by

both the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the NC Natural Heritage Program. Over 70 acres of pasture are also protected, in addition to natural forest, providing habitat for many native plants and animals.

Circle “M” Farm Bill and Mary Mills donated a conservation easement on 41 acres of their farm in the western Wake County community of Green Level. Bachelor Branch and several streams run through this tract and the water flowing through them eventually empties into Jordan Lake. Conservation of this property provides our community with local farms and food, wildlife habitat and clean water.

Fern Hill Farm Sara Robertson and her husband Sam Blanton donated a conservation easement on 126 acres of their Fern Hill Farm, which has been in her family for several generations. About half of the protected portion is farmland, leased out for tobacco and soybeans, and the other half is forested. The farm is part of the Wake County Voluntary Agriculture District program.

Ayrshire Farm Bill Dow granted a conservation easement on his 22-acre Ayrshire Farm, TLC’s first easement on one of the Triangle’s many small, organic farms. When he started growing organically, he had to prove wrong

local agricultural leaders who said organic couldn’t be done in North Carolina. He later went on to help found the Carrboro Farmer’s Market, develop markets for local produce with local restaurants, establish the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association and the Sustainable Agriculture Program of Central Carolina Community College, and become the first certified organic farm in North Carolina. The easement ensures forever that this fertile land will be available to provide fresh food to Triangle residents. In addition, it provides a forested buffer along a tributary of the Rocky River.

STEWARDSHIPStewardship activities for TLC vary from season to season and place to place. A multitude of factors influence how TLC staff manage each preserve or open land, including the habitat type, public use, surrounding land use and changing environmen-tal conditions. Significant stewardship activities this year included…

Temple Flat Rock burn In March, the NC Forest Service set fire to the Temple Flat Rock prairie in an effort to restore it to its original splendor.

At one time, Piedmont prairies were common throughout the area, but when European settlers arrived, the land was cultivated. By the end of the 20th century, only a few remnants of the Piedmont prairies remained.

At Temple Flat Rock, TLC has identified an opportunity to restore a small patch of Piedmont prairie. Consulting with Dr. Jon Stucky, associate professor of plant biology at N.C. State University, and Donna Wright, a teaching technician in the same department, TLC has devised a plan to recreate a prairie system. Annual mowing, herbicide applica-tions, controlled burning and seeding of native warm season grasses and wildflowers are all part of the plan. This was the second burn at Temple Flat Rock.

Swift Creek Bluffs trail Several volunteer groups and interns worked to upgrade and reroute trails that were frequently muddy at Swift Creek Bluffs. One anonymous donor provided a share of the funding for this project through the Our Water Our Land campaign. A plaque will be placed by the new boardwalk with a poem written in honor of the donor’s mother.

Corporate/Educational Work Days In addition to TLC’s individual volunteers, many corporate and educational groups helped TLC with several projects

Students from Duke Law, North Carolina State University, Duke University, Durham Academy and Raleigh Charter High School worked on a variety of tasks including trail work and invasive plant removal. Staff of the NC Department of Environment & Natural Resources’ Public Water Supply division planted trees at the Irvin Nature Preserve and Wal-Mart employees planted native grasses and completed trail work at Flower Hill. Employees of the Redwoods Group, Raleigh Wake Paralegal and Wal-Mart worked on trails at Swift Creek Bluffs and Merck employees worked at Horton Grove Preserve. We were also fortunate to have NC State, Carleton College, UNC, Duke University, University of Florida and Durham Academy interns working on several stewardship projects.

Our Water, Our Land raised $5.5 million to advance conserva-tion across the Triangle. It marked the largest capital campaign in Triangle Land Conservancy’s history and included gifts from 337 first-time donors to TLC. Our Water, Our Land increased the available funding to protect important open space and complete those projects more quickly.

Honoring the TLC leader who passed away in March, the Pear-son Stewart Land Opportunity Fund established a $4 million revolving fund for land acquisition. Prior to establishing that fund, TLC only had a pool of $150,000 available to assist with land projects to safeguard clean water, support local farms and food, protect wildlife habitat and connect people with nature.

Our Water, Our Land funds have enabled TLC to permanently protect 13 miles of streams and drinking water resources, eight family farms and more than 2,000 acres of wildlife habitat. Funds also helped TLC expand all four of its existing nature preserves – Flower Hill, White Pines, Swift Creek Bluffs and Johnston Mill – and purchase 613-acres in Orange County that will become one of our newest nature preserves.

Thank you to all donors, campaign leadership, staff members and friends who made Our Water, Our Land a success for local conservation, today and for future generations.

Our Water, Our Land SpotlightFunding from the Pearson Stewart Land Opportunity Fund played an instrumental role in acquiring a 613-acre wooded property in Orange County. TLC used $340,000 from the Land Opportunity Fund to leverage other private and public funding for the project. Over the next few years, TLC will work toward making the George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve (see “Brumley Forest,” page 4) open to the public with hiking trails and interactive environmental education programs.
