President’s Message --- September 2018

With relief from Canadian wildfire smoke, and some light rain

showers, we are getting the feel of a season change here on the

Olympic Peninsula. Fall planting time is just ahead!

Near the end of August a nice portion of Highland Hills’ members

filled the Pioneer Park clubhouse as we shared visits and an

excellent meal with friendly neighbors at the annual HHMC

Potluck/Picnic. A big “thank-you” to the Picnic Committee for

organizing the happy event, including a fun raffle---it was enjoyable.

At the Picnic, our CERT team had a table set up with emergency planning materials and information

about CERT which was greeted with interest by many attendees. The team has established a web

site to communicate with members and to provide information to the curious, at: www.certbellhill.org.

Near the end of August I took advantage of a one-day-a-year opportunity to tour the grounds of the

famous Le May family home near Tacoma to see the incredible Le May family automobile collection

kept there (along with their other collections), as well as their nearby even larger family museum at

Marymount, a former boy’s military academy. These two locations house more than 2400 of Le May’s

collectible vehicles of every type and description. Le May’s have also donated several hundred cars

to the large public car museum (“Le May – America’s Car Museum”) near the Tacoma Dome. Only a

couple of hours drive from Sequim, a visit to the spectacular Tacoma Dome car museum and the

world-class Marymount Le May facility (closed on Mondays) should be on any car enthusiast’s must-

do list.

Here on the Hill, in August we completed several HHMC dry-weather storm water drainage system

maintenance activities including a second ditch mowing, annual detention basin maintenance and an

independent drainage system engineering inspection. In September we will be completing our

summer road maintenance work by doing roadside weed spraying as well as filling/sealing cracks in

the asphalt roadbed. Two driveway/culvert installation plans for access to lots on the east side of Fox

Hollow Road have recently been approved and you may notice contractor activity happening there

soon.

Only one residence building project (on Covey Run) is currently in progress, with several others in the

early planning stages. Meanwhile there have been several recent existing-home sales recorded,

meaning new residents will be appearing and need to be welcomed to the neighborhood!

At the September HHMC Board of Trustees’ Meeting the August financial report was reviewed and

we got our first look at a preliminary draft of a projected 2019 annual budget. Our current financial

status is excellent with adequate cash on hand to complete 2018 needs. Major expenses for the

month totaled approximately $29,000 (including ~$17k for lot mowing & ~$11.7k for drainage system

maintenance). Plans for an independent financial audit of 2017 financials was discussed. With no

substantial non-routine roads or drainage projects in the plans for next year the first look 2019 budget

looks like it may be similar to or lower than the 2018 budget. Budget details will be completed in

September for presentation to HHMC members in the Annual General Meeting data packet to be

made available in October, prior to the AGM scheduled for Wednesday, November 14th, at Sunland.

Best wishes as fall gets underway,

Ted Johnson

Your Hill Needs You!

Do you have a desire to make a difference? Do you have super skills that are not

being utilized?!?!

If you have a background in administration, finance, office skills or the willingness and aptitude

to learn, please consider volunteering for an HHMC committee right now, or even running for a

Board of Trustees position in a future election. (Elected HHMC officials serve a 3 year term

attending Board meetings the first Wednesday evening of each month.)

There is always a need for volunteers for a multitude of committees that function in Highland

Hills to help preserve our neighborhood and represent residents. If you have interest, please

let your Board know. These committees include:

Annual Meeting Architectural Control

Beautification Community Environment Greenbelt Highlander/Website Internet Services Mowing Nominating Picnic/Potluck Roads and Drainage Safety and Awareness Welcoming

Our HOA runs on volunteers, so step up and be an active part of your neighborhood.

A letter from James Barnfather, a property owner and former resident of the Hill.

I have a few items I'd like to clear up after reading this month's Highlander, specifically under the CERT topic:

1. It was stated that in the event of a major disaster that there would be no help coming because Seattle and other areas would take priority. This statement is simply not true! The real reason that Clallam County Fire District #3 is recommending that people prepare to be self-sufficient for 30 days is because of our unique geography. When "The Big One" hits, our 23 bridges will collapse, essentially creating what is described as Micro-Islands. This will prevent emergency responders from getting to you, and keeping YOU from getting anywhere like the store or doctor's office. In actuality, 30 days is considered the absolute minimum for stored supplies.

2. I would also like to point out that in the past Highlanders, there has been no mention at all of who is providing the training, facilities, and supplies for the CERT program itself. Countless hours have been provided to not only the residents of Bell Hill, but also to surrounding neighborhoods and communities by Clallam County Fire District #3. Our staff, led by Assistant Chief Dan Orr and Certified Disaster Management expert Blaine Zechenelly. These two gentlemen donate countless hours to this program, and frankly, I fail to see why there is never any mention of their names or their sacrifice.

3. On a separate note, this is the worst wildfire season on record. It is vitally important that our members refresh their knowledge on this subject by reading the two-part article on Wildfires, in the Safety and Awareness section of the Highlander.

Thanks for listening,

James Barnfather

Our Monthly Weather

No More Smoke – Just a Little Rain

As the end of summer approaches, our local weather is easing into Autumn. Mixed sun and clouds with a little rain almost daily. Enough precipitation to turn off the lawn irrigation and make scheduling lawn mowing difficult. It is nice to see the dormant grass start to turn green after essentially no rain for 2 months. Western Washington’s weather guru Cliff Mass predicts that we’ve seen the last of the warm and sunny summer weather for this year. Expect a normal northwestern autumn and winter. Normal is nice – no hurricanes, tornados or drought for us!

All measurements are taken at 600’. Precipitation is measured daily at 7 am.

INSPIRING UNDERSTANDING, ENJOYMENT, AND STEWARDSHIP OF THE OLYMPIC

PENINSULA’S UNIQUE NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES IS A PILLAR OF THE WORK

BEHIND WHAT MAKES THE RIVER FESTIVAL SUCH A SPECIAL EVENT FOR OUR

FREE PLATFORM FOR ORGANIZATIONS AND AGENCIES TO SHARE THEIR WORK AND

INSPIRE ALL GENERATIONS TO WHAT AN AMAZING STORY THE DUNGENESS RIVER CAN

TELL!

Like many watersheds, the Dungeness has a complex ecological story that has to be told and experienced by many

different people to understand. The River Festival gives people the chance to hear from the people that are both

exploring and creating the story of the Dungeness. US Forest Service, NOAA, National Park Service, PTC, Back

Country Horsemen, Clallam County, BEACH, and NOLT are just a few of the many agencies that will be on hand to

share, demonstrate and answer questions about our watershed and the Olympic Peninsula’s natural resources.

Please mark your calendar and make a plan to come down and learn even more about the area you love. If you have

questions about the festival, are interested in helping out, or you know of group that would be a good fit at the

festival, please contact the River Center at 360-681-4076 or email [email protected].

This year we are adding a "Community Night" on Thursday. Join us for an evening of food, music, and celebration

of our river that provides so much for us!
