Kamalini Vocational Training Centre was founded by Protsahan, a charitabletrust registered on January 8th 2003 in New Delhi to promote education,learning and technical skills training particularly among women and girls. In2007, the first Kamalini Vocational Training Centre opened in the urbanvillage of Shahpur Jat (near Siri Fort, New Delhi). The project soon expandedto a second location in Kishangarh (near Vasant Kunj, New Delhi). In 2010Protsahan signed a MoU with Educational and Development Initiatives (EDI)to open a new Kamalini centre in Sohna Road (Gurgaon, Haryana) with high-quality installations and much bigger capacity. The new location is underconstruction due to open in 2015.

Since inception, Kamalini has reached to more than 1400 migrant women,domestic workers, school drop-outs and other underprivileged women withlimited learning opportunities due to gender discrimination to impart valuableskills to increase their earning power and take better care of their homes andfamilies.

Through Kamallini, students and professionals are encouraged to volunteerand give their time for helping others in need.

Training & Development

Skills training & students reach

New steps were taken this year tocontinue gaining external recognitionof the vocational training imparted atKamalini. The Delhi Governmentcertifies various levels of trainingimparted at Kamalini in Cutting &Tailoring as well as Indian Cooking &Fast Food preparation. Kamaliniregularly prepares students forexternal examinations under theTechnical Education and CommunityOutreach Scheme (TECOS) led by theDirectorate of Technical Training andEducation (DTTE, Delhi Government).

To upgrade the skills of its students,Kamalini entered into a partnership withNIIT Foundation for a joint certificationof its Basic IT course. The Embassy ofGermany has also helped Kamalini ingetting an eco-friendly computing systeminstalled to reach more number ofstudents for the IT training.

In the International Cookingexamination held in October, underthe vigilance of jury members fromBritish High Commission, MainTendue and American Women’sAssociation; Kamalini students havesuccessfully showcased their learnedskills they have been attaining underthe guidance of Main Tenduevolunteers, a French charity in Delhi.

Apart from its regular courses in Cutting & Tailoring, Basic IT, Indian / International Cooking,Housekeeping, Kamalini has imparted various short term sessions on bakery, potterydecoration and ice-cream making to enhance the existing skills in its students. Thebeneficiaries were also given a chance to learn art painting in a short creative session by ayouth-run charitable organization, Nayi Udaan.

Aiming to help its students to earn fromtheir acquired skills, Kamalini, in thisyear, established its Production Centrewith the help of Bancaja (throughFundacion DASYC Valencia). This is afacility to promote micro business andself-employment among its studentsand alumni. The students earn bymaking products as guided byvolunteers and staff according to thequality and design required by themarket that helps add to their familyincome. The production centre is ameans to help sustain the project whiletranslating skills into earning for thestudents and alumni.

Holistic development

Along with its skill developmentprogramme, Kamalini implementsholistic development approach for itsbeneficiaries through different life skillsand awareness workshops. AnnieMoraes, Member (Finance), TelecomCommission, imparted an informalsession about citizen’s and women’srights to the Kamalini beneficiaries. Thesession was a step towards awarenessgeneration among the socio-economically backward women, abouttheir citizenship credentials and variousavailable schemes for women.

Thanks to the initiative of certifiedLife Coach Neena Leutz, Kamalinistaff and trainers have participated ina series of lively group coachingsessions to explore each one’spotential to reach the aims of theproject, discovering their ownpersonality as team members, andwork on conflict resolution andmanagement.

In the form of its initiative towardswomen empowerment, Kamalini has beenpromoting corporate citizenship and socialresponsibility among organizations. Ateam of volunteers from Deloitteconducted a hygiene workshop forKamalini beneficiaries to address health,personal hygiene and sanitation issuesamong girls and women.

The staff and students celebrate occasions like Independence Day and Republic day with lots of vigorand pomp, giving beneficiaries a chance to showcase their varied talents. Dancing, singing, walkingdown the ramp, acting a parody. Mrs. Veena Kumari Bhutani, Administrative Officer (Training) -Directorate of Training and Technical Education, government of NCT India and Dr. Sanjay KumarManaging Trustee, SEWA (Self Employed Women's Association), Delhi as guests of honor in theannual function, added to the grandeur of these events. A total of 281 certificates were distributedin August 2013, among the students of various training programmes who had successfullycompleted their courses in the previous year.

In January 2014, 24 studentswere awarded certificates inconjunction with NIIT for theBasic IT course. Mr. ParmanandaSantra, Manager Partnershipsfrom NIIT Foundation said it wasremarkable that two students ofthe first batch were ranked“Outstanding.”

Fostering Solidarity

For effective implementation of projectactivities and incur the costs adequate toits resources, Kamalini has involved invarious fund-raising events and activitiesto generate its financial resources for itsfunctioning. With the support of MainTendue, Kamalini participated in theFrench Mela in November, whereinproducts made by its students were sold.One of the Kamalini students alsoassisted in applying henna in the handsof the visitors that was very popular inthe Mela. Kamalini also participated inthe Mela at the British High Commissionwhere the bakery and other apparelitems were on sale for the visitors.

Fund-raising events

Kamalini also got a chance to display and sell itsproducts in the UNICEF Mela. During the Diwalifestivities, Kamalini conducted a charity Mela in theurban village of Delhi, Kishangarh, for poor peopleto avail donated clothes at minimal price. A Spanishexport house El Corte Ingles donated export sampleapparels and accessories which had fetched somefunds for Kamalini in events run by volunteers. Allproceeds from such events help in our work to servethe underprivileged women.

The Kamalini Village Walk is a popularway for visitors to support our cause anddiscover the monuments, vibrant charmand artisans along the streets of ShahpurJat village. A notable event was a groupof fourteen Japanese students, who afterexploring in the Village Walk, cherishedthe chance to learn to cook an Indiansnack, samosas, in Kamalini’s teachingkitchen. We’ve led groups in French andSpanish as well thanks to our multi-lingual guide Preeti Sachdeva. We alsothank those who sponsored winningrunner Aurea Muller Das, who toppedher category running for Kamalini theAirtel Delhi Half Marathon in this year.

Kamalini was invited to participate in theInternational Seminar on Hospitality atStrathmore University, Nairobi, with thesupport of the Limmat Foundation. PolianaAruda presented our methodology for cateringtraining at Kamalini. Following ourcollaboration with NIIT Foundation foraccreditation of the Basic IT course, Kamalinitrainers attended “training of trainers’” toupgrade their teaching skills and lessonplanning for greater impact on students. Someof the Kamalini team also participated in theNGO meet with NIIT, wherein variousorganizations could exchange their ideas aboutimproved functioning and better facilitationmethods towards their beneficiaries.

Active participation in sessions likebrainstorming session with United Way of Delhifocusing on women empowerment andfinancial literacy; workshop on analyzing theskills landscape in India with Ennovent-Tie;seminar on winning women and otherinteractive sessions have helped in strategicdevelopment in Kamalini’s functioning. As itsmission of empowering the marginalized andvulnerable women, Kamalini also went aheadto support the human rights campaign for thedomestic workers. By scaling up its projectactivities and expanding its outreach to thebeneficiaries, Kamalini seeks to create a widerimpact upon the entire community.

Work sessions during the visit ofthe chairperson of FundacionDASYC (Spain), Ms. Ana LuzHuete, have helped in theanalysis and evaluation ofseveral project actions by theterm end. The observations andinsights from the discussionshave led Kamalini to formulatenew projects with more impact.

She is a mother of three school-going adolescentchildren and stays on a rented house inKishangarh, an urban village in the south of Delhi.Her husband was earlier involved in a self-runproperty consulting work, but because of hishealth concerns he discontinued from his sourceof livelihood. The family thrives on the help theyreceive from her relatives and parents thatsomehow enables her to run the household.On learning about Kamalini and attending itsCutting and Tailoring classes, she attainedstitching skills that is now helping her to saveentire tailor cost, which she earlier had to incur.Her skills are helping her to stitch clothes for herneighbors and earn little income to offset herhousehold expenses. She is also working for theKamalini production centre for which she stitchesapparels for ladies and is paid against the itemsmade. She aspires to work from home at a biggerscale and earn sufficient for her household aswell as provide better education to her children.
