GOAL: The raised bed in the front yard greets people as they

arrive with an aesthetically pleasing and orderly display of

plants and offers peaceful places to visit.o A small palette of tree and plant types, arranged in interesting

ways, helps to create a sense oforder and simplicity.

o Ornamental grasses, broad-leafperennials, and lavender

colored trees help create the desired aesthetic.

o Bee-attracting, fragrantly flowering plants are minimized.

o Sun/shade, soil drainage, and climate help determine the low

    maintenance perennial varieties planted here. P r o j e c t G o a l s

GOAL: The courtyard is a luscious outdoor entertainment area with

an Asian-feeling.o Asian-esque plants frame the edges of the courtyard.

o A non-flowering, Asian-looking vine spreads along the western fence.

o A fire pit is centrally located with moveable furniture for entertaining.

    INTRODUCTION

Dino and Coralei Provenzano built their house on the scenic

outskirts of urban Kingston, NY. At the quiet end of a cul-de-

street, the Provenzano home is situated in a clearing, surroun

by white pines and mixed hardwoods. They regularly enjoy th

backyardsitting by the pool, eating on the deck, and playin

with their dog. They would like to increase their overall use o

    the front yard and courtyard.

    CLIMATIC FACTORS

The annual average precipitation: 47.48 inches

Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year,

    although summers can be dry

Warmest month: July (average max. temperature of 80)

Coldest month: January (average min. temperature of 17)

    Hardiness Zone 5 (last frost ~May 4; first frost ~Oct. 7)

Storms and cold winds from the north/northwest

    DESIGN DIRECTIONS

Add focal points and increase circulation in front yardand to courtyard to support the Provenzanos in using these

    areas more frequently

Use on-site resources in response to site conditions:

+ Consider transplanting smaller white pines on

northern edge of fence, garage, and driveway to

    form a wind break

+ Captureroof runoff for irrigation of new

gardens to supplement rain during dry summers

+ Integrate existing boulders into design

    SOIL TEST RESULTSSoil pH 6.8

+ Desired range; no need to amend soil with sulfur unless plantingericaceous plants in the future such as blueberries, wintergreen, etc.

+ Note: ericaceous varieties are not included in planting planOrganic matter is low

+ For perennials, increase humus content with nished compostLow level of lead

+ Soil is safe for any future planting of vegetablesNew perennial bed preparation in spring + Organic Approach (*recommended*): Apply 1-2 bushels of

composted manure AND 8 lbs rock phosphate per 100 sq f

+ Synthetic Approach: Apply 2 lbs 5-10-10 fertilizer per 100sq ft

Sun/Shade Notes Plantings for courtyard must be shade-tolerant

The driveway is the only area in the front yard that receives a

    full day of sun

The existing bed and lawn receive 3-6 hours of sun on

average; plants here must do well with part-sun

Roof tops are ideal for installation of solar panels

    or solar hot water

    NEW ARCHWAY

    TO GARDEN PATH

    (matches exisng arch

    into courtyard)

The circular driveway has been removed to create a

cohesive and scenic front yard. A new parking areais introduced, positioned to allow easy loading and

unloading access to the front door. A 5wide unplanted

area makes room for a snow bank. Raised containersof bamboo line the eastern edge of the parking area for

visual screening between the garden and parked cars.

Curvilinear raised beds with 1 tall stone retaining wallshouse Japanese gardens and flank the front walkway, and

a second tier bed extends into the previous parking area,

where a Sun Garden captures the long hours of sunlight

here. A border of ornamental trees and shrubs alongthe western edge create a feeling of enclosure and offer

seasonal interest for a stroll around the garden perimeter.

Rain barrels are placed at gutter downspouts for irrigationduring dry times. Rocky swales absorb overflow from the

barrels, passively irrigate nearby plants, and attractively

delineate edges of the two upper beds.

Planting Plan Notes All plants are perennials and

are shown here at mature size

    Plants have been selected

    based on sun/shade patterns,

    soil analysis, water requirements,

    and hardiness zone

    Bee-attracting plants are

not included in the beds, and

    flowering shrubs and trees have

been kept to the perimeter of

    the garden

    All plants require minimal

    irrigation, except for the two

    sedges (Carex muskingumensis

Oehme and Carex elataAurea),which need medium to

    wet conditions and have been

    conveniently placed next to rain

    barrels and swales

    Plant Carex muskingumensis
