“You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood.”

Through the month of May and into June, we’ll be look-ing at the Acts of the Apos-tles. This fifth book of the New Testament is the story of the first Christians as they found their way after the ascension of Jesus into heaven.

It’s a book full of surprises. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost, that moment in time when God poured out his Spirit on this little band of Jesus’ followers, is undoubt-edly the most important event in Acts and the most difficult to describe.

The Spirit was given that day in a way that had never been given before—not tem-porarily, but to dwell in their midst, to be the bond of their fellowship, the source of their common life, the power for their mission to the world, and the witness to their preaching.

Over the next months and years, that Spirit moved them in ways they would

never had imagined. Peter would preach for the con-version of thousands of peo-ple; he and John would heal a man who had been lame for forty years and then stand before the Sanhedrin to defend the power of the name of Jesus Christ. Saul would become Paul and turn from persecuting Chris-tians to sharing his faith beyond the bounds of even his imagination.

In the fourth chapter of Acts, the Jewish leaders recognize Peter and John as having spent time with Jesus. . . . The council had to be amazed. They knew who these men were . . . where they were from . . . that they were untrained in the scriptures . . . merely fishermen caught in a scandal on land. But Peter and John had been with Jesus . . . and that’s what hap-pens when you spend a little time with the Savior.

Pastor’s message

That Spirit moved them

One of the most evident expres-sions of the power of God in our lives is in how he changes us. Your greatest testimony is the difference others see in your life and attitudes since you made Jesus your Lord and Savior.

The ministry accomplished by the Apostles who walked the earth with Jesus has not ended. It continues today and will continue long past the time you and I are above ground. New chapters will be written as Providence Presbyterian Church contin-ues to live within the love of a faithful God, the teach-ing of our brother Jesus Christ, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

So join me in the coming weeks as we celebrate Pentecost and study the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the life of our congregation.

Thank you very much for making Ronald McDonald House of Mobile feel like home to the families who stay here. Nothing says home like the aroma of a warm meal. It was a great treat for our guests, after spending a long day at the hospital by the side of their children, to return to find a wonderful home-cooked meal that you lovingly prepared for them. It means so much to our families not only to have a great meal

waiting, but also for them to know that someone cared about them in such a thoughtful way.

Our mission at Ronald McDonald House of Mobile is to provide a supportive home environment offering care, com-passion, and hope to families with seriously ill and injured children being treated at area hospitals. A great part of that mission is providing nourish-ment for families so that they can remain strong to love and

nurture their children back to health. The gift of your meal provided just that!

Thank you again for your kindness and for helping us keep our families together when it matters most. On behalf of all those families, please accept our heartfelt appreciation.

Tim Morris, President, Board of Directors

Thank you from Ronald McDonald House

Beginning on Wednesday, May 2, Sharon Smith and Jerry Williams will lead a discussion of N. T. Wright’s The Lord and His Prayer each Wednesday at 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, respec-tively. Attendees may want to bring a meal to share following the morning class or immedi-ately before the evening class at 5:30 pm.

The Church office will be ordering books. There is signup sheet in the Narthex.

About The Lord and His

Prayer

In The Lord and His Prayer, a series of pastoral reflections, N. T. Wright explores how the Lord’s Prayer sums up Jesus’ own agenda within his first- century setting.

Taking the Lord’s Prayer clause by clause, Wright locates it within the histori-cal life and work of Jesus and allows the prayer’s

devotional application to grow out of its historical con-text.

Wright demon-strates how grasping the Lord’s Prayer in its original setting can be the starting point for a fresh under-standing of Christian spiri-tuality and the life of prayer.

Six chapters follow the Pro-logue: “Our Father in Heaven,” “Thy Kingdom Come,” “Give Us this Day,” “Forgive Us Our Trespasses,” “Deliver Us From Evil,” and “The Power and the Glory.”

Praise for The Lord and

His Prayer

By Manny Russo,

Scoutmaster

During April we had two Eagle Court of Honors. Jona-than and Harrison both earned the Eagle Rank and celebrated with a formal ceremony called “Eagle Court of Honor.” These two young men celebrated with family, friends, and fel-low scouts and then enjoyed plenty of good eats!

Over the past 8 months, your troop had 4 scouts who earned the Eagle Rank. Only about 3 out of a 100 reach this mile-stone.

Why do we seem to have many Eagles? It’s an easy answer. First, we have great moms/dads/grandparents. A loving and supportive family

usually has successful chil-dren. Also, Troop 292 has a church family who supports what we do and does not complain when we leave a mess or misbehave!!! Thanks for your patience with us and your support of a great program teaching young men life skills beginning with God’s guidance.

The April campout was can-celled due to a high probabil-ity of heavy rain and lightning and possible torna-dos. We will camp in May at Wiggins, MS. Our new scouts will take a 5-mile hike using a map and compass. In addi-tion, they will learn other skills, such as cooking their meals, washing dishes, start-ing a fire, identifying poison-ous plants, and much more.

Also in May, the Mobile Area Council will have its annual Eagle Banquet, rec-ognizing all Eagle Scouts from 2017. Some of our scouts and adults will be in attendance to support all the scouts who reached this rank. The event will take place at the USS Alabama Battleship Museum. A fun program, catered meal, and good fellowship will be enjoyed by all.

In the summer and fall, we expect 5 scouts to work on their Eagle Project. Some will build housing for ani-mals at the Environmental Studies Center while others will do projects at a local church and for a high school. These projects will require hundreds of hours of work

and thousands of dollars in materials.

Summer Camp at Maubila Scout Reservation in Jack-son, AL, is just 6 weeks away. We expect to have about 39 scouts and adults attend camp. The scouts will take merit badge classes relating to Citizenship in the Community, First Aid/CPR, Money Management, Fam-ily Life/Responsibilities, Veterinary Medicine, and many more. This will be a fun time for all.

Thanks again to the Provi-dence Presbyterian Church family for your support. I can assure you that your sponsorship of Troop 292 makes a difference in the lives of these young men. Thanks again.
