Donald (Don) Baillie Green

December 20, 1929 - September 29, 2016

On September 29, 2016, the Foundation lost a cherished

friend. Don, along with his wife, Shirley, have served as

honorary Chairs for over a decade. For years, the Don and

Shirley Green Family Charitable Foundation have been

significant supporters of the Brockville General Hospital.

His smile was contagious and legendary.

His philanthropy and sense of giving a legacy.

A Message from the FoundationWe welcome the opportunity to share with you the impact your generosity has had on the patients of the Brockville General Hospital.

In 2016, donors throughout Leeds and Grenville gave over $1. 5 million dollars towards the support of programs and equipment needs, all of which stayed in our communities to help improve care for you, your friends and neighbours.

We also offer our special appreciation to the truly remarkable board members, and staff, at the Foundation. Each and every member of the team is committed to doing their best every day to ensure our donors receive outstanding service and support.

Our gratitude is endless.

Open House

On Wednesday, October 5th, the first Open House was held in the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Cardiovascular Unit. This event was held in conjunction with Shoppers Drug Marts “Growing Women’s Health Campaign” (Brockville & Prescott locations), with the aim of raising awareness of issues related to women’s heart health. 100% of the local dollars raised during this campaign will go to support the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP) at BGH which receives no

government funding. The Open House event was open to the public and during the free two hour session the community could gather information from professionals in the areas of nutrition, stress, and exercise.

For the second year in a row, the Shoppers Drug Mart’s “Growing Women’s Health” Campaign shone a light on cardio-vascular health for women, with an emphasis on raising awareness of the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP) at the Brockville General Hospital (BGH). The BCP is a prevention and rehabilitation service that receives no government funding and is run entirely on community dona-tions. During the campaign, funds were raised in support of the BCP at both Brockville stores, as well as the Prescott location. Customers had the opportunity to support the service by purchasing personalized “Growing Women’s Health” icons, throughout the month long campaign. Shoppers also collaborated with the BCP to put on a very successful Open House. Total funds raised for the BCP on behalf of the three Shoppers locations, over $10,296...amazing heart health advocates!

Scotiabank supports Brockville Cardiovascular Program

Brockville’s King Street Scotiabank branch presented a very generous $5,000 cheque to the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation as part of this summer’s Heart and Solstice event.

The funds raised at the Heart and Solstice event will support the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP) located at the Brock-ville General Hospital. The sold-out event took place June 16, 2016 on Poole and Jeroy Islands on the beautiful St. Lawrence River.

The Brockville Cardiovascular Program has annual costs totaling $181,000, but does not receive government funding. Through the generosity of the local community, fundraisers such as Heart and Solstice allow the BCP to continue supporting patients in Leeds and Grenville. Since 2009, the Heart and Solstice event has raised nearly $200,000 for the BCP.

Women making a difference $100 at a time

The 100 Women Who Care 1000 Islands Chapter supported the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Cardiovascular Program (BCP) with additional dona-tions coming in after the cheque presentation a total of $9,100 was raised. Robyn Houle nominated and spoke to the importance of the BCP. Robyn (second from the left) spoke to her early heart disease issues which included 9 cardiac interventions and 2 bypasses the first when she was 34. That was back when the BCP did not exist and her passion spoke to how important it is to now have this ser-vice in our community so that if anyone should ever need it like she did it is there…like her Mom…who has had to use the service and for Robyn so glad it is there.

Kayaking for Cardiac Rehab

Rick Trapp has a passion for the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP) at the Brockville General Hospital (BGH). As a graduate of the program in 2014, Rick knows only too well the benefits this program has to each and every person that enters its doors. Three years ago he wanted to give back to this program, that gave life back to him, so began this kayaking fundraiser. For the last three years, Rick, and fellow kayakers have made the journey from Kingston to Ottawa. Funds are raised through pledges, and this year an astounding $10,750 doubling funds raised in 2015! The BCP receives no government funding and events, such as this, are to its on-going operation.

Pictured: (l-r) Rick Trapp; Jason Lafave, Kinesiologist with the BCP, Helen Ostap, Registered Nurse with the BCP; and Heather Halladay, Vice Chair of the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation.

Tea to Remember Raises $1000 for Palliative Care

On December 6th, the 3rd Annual Tea to Remember was held at the Chartwell Wedgewood Retirement Residence, in support of the Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Service. The after-noon was an opportunity for those that have had a connection with the service, to come together as a community, and remember precious loved ones. Attendees enjoyed tea, delicious goodies and were entertained by the elegant sounds of Harpeggia. During the event there was an opportunity to make a donation to the service and receive a handcrafted Angel Ornament. In addition to the angels Lea and Phil Hamblett from Harpeggia donated a portion of their cd sales to the cause. The overwhelming generosity of the attendees reached a total of $1000 raised for the Brockville General Hospital’s Palliative Care Service.

Hendrix Donation in Memory of Jan Shuh

It seemed fitting that on May 26th, which would have been her birthday, Jan Shuh’s life and memory were honoured with a donation of $4,000 to the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Palliative Care Service by fellow Hen-drix employees. Jan worked at Hendrix for over 10 years and was an integral part of the Hendrix family. Funds are raised annually through the CHEF initiative, Charities of Hendrix Employ-ees Fund and, based on a set of criteria, outlets then select a cause in their community of which to direct the funds. Activities to raise the funds include; hot lunches, pay day pool, and the 50/50 draws.

Our Youth Supporting Palliative Care

On April 6th, students from St. Lawrence College held a Pool Tournament fundraising event at Sam’s Brass Racks, all in support of the Palliative Care Service at the Brockville General Hospital, Garden Street Site. As a part of their business program, the students were to plan an event in regards to a charity of their choice, and Palliative Care was the lucky recipient of the funds raised. A total of $1,750 was raised through team registra-tions, a 50/50 draw, and a variety of pay as you play games while team participants were not busy at the tables. Fun was had by all of those in attendance, and a wonderful example of how our youth can make a difference in our community.

Equipment Donations Donation Improves Patient Safety at Garden Street Site

The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation is updating the patient wandering system at the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Garden Street Site thanks to a $14,000 donation from Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life.

The new prevention system ensures patients who are prone to wandering remain safely inside the hospital. Patients are fitted with a bracelet that triggers an alarm if they wander towards an elevator or an exit door. Once the alarm is triggered, a code must be entered into a keypad to disarm the system and activate the door or elevator. The system helps to maintain a safe environ-ment for the Hospital’s most vulnerable patients. It also provides peace of mind for patients, their families, and hospital staff.

The donation was made by Freedom 55 Financial’s Pat Lindsay, Director of Business Development, and Martin Gysbers, Financial Security Advisor, on behalf of Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life.

Annual Appeal The Heart of our Community Shines for Annual Appeal

This year, the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation’s (BDHF) Annual Appeal focused on the cardiovascular program at the Brockville General Hospital (BGH). The Brock-ville Cardiovascular Program requires $181,000 per year to function, relying solely on help from the community. Over the last seven years, the Volunteer Association has donated $185,000.
