Beloved Provincetown

Town CrierKen Lonergangreets visitors

and says:

"Welcome to Provincetown!

Thank you for wearing a mask.

We wear becausewe care!"

HEAR YE, HEAR YE, HEAR YE!TOWN CRIER – KEN LONERGAN RETIRING

After 13 years of serving this wonderful community, Kenneth Lonergan, our Town Crier, has announced his retirement. Ken started working for the Pilgrim Monument and

Provincetown Museum in 2007, the year that marked the centennial of the laying of thecornerstone by President Teddy Roosevelt,

and his last day will be Sunday, September 6th.

Ken’s first duty in 2007 was to greet and welcome 400 Masons who arrived to town on theProvincetown II and he then led a parade up to the Monument for the re-enactment of the

laying of the cornerstone ceremony.

“I met Candy Collins-Boden in 2006 and I asked her ‘why is it that Provincetown doesn’thave a Town Crier?’ Soon after, Jim Bakker asked me if I’d be interested in the position

after he saw me “barking” in front of the UU Meeting House for The Three Mary’s,”Lonergan remembered. “I didn’t even have an outfit, but Jo-Ell suggested I went to

Ruthie’s and look for a seamstress. I called Joyce Wilde and she mademe an outfit with a cape.”

Page 3: Provincetown · first landing place of Mayflower Pilgrims in the New World and where they signed the Mayflower Compact – the first democratic document that marked the birth of American

Over the years, Ken talked to our visitors and guests about how Provincetown is the truefirst landing place of Mayflower Pilgrims in the New World and where they signed the

Mayflower Compact – the first democratic document that marked the birth of Americanliberty - back in 1620 and share with them our story, culture and heritage –

Provincetown’s essence in a nutshell.

Lonergan also coined the saying “All is well in Provincetown because you’re here!” andhe was the protagonist in the “Because you're here” documentary, a profile piece showed

at the 2017 Provincetown International Film Festival.Ken would welcome ferries, greet our visitors, partake in parades and never miss a photo

op; the Celebration of Life Concerts, John Thomas’s wonderful event!he would work special events such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and Chamber-related events all while singing his beloved songs – repertoire which only expanded as

years went by.

“Ken has been an amazing ambassador for Provincetown and for the Chamber; these arebig shoes to fill,” said Radu Luca, Provincetown Chamber of Commerce Executive

Director. “He will definitely be missed out on Commercial Street, but I would like to wishKen a happy and healthy retirement on behalf of the entire Provincetown community and

everyone who knows him.”

Health Director Morgan Clark and Board of Health Vice Chair, Dr. Susan Troyanoffer a summary of the COVID-19 testing options available to the public.

There is a great deal of interest in the type of COVID-19 testing that is currently available to the public, especiallyfor those who have no symptoms, but may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus through work or social

contact. If people have any symptoms of COVID-19, they can go to their medical provider, get tested andinsurance will cover the test. For those who are pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic and have a higher risk ofexposure due to their job, it’s very understandable that they would want to get a test that is reliable with a

reasonably short turnaround to get their test result. For information the types of testing, click here.

The Provincetown Health Department has received questions about the availability of free COVID-19 testingfor asymptomatic people. Currently, there is no availability on Cape Cod for free testing for people who do notpresent symptoms of the virus. People who show symptoms will have their insurance cover the cost of aCOVID-19 test.Massachusetts does offer free testing as part of its “Stop the Spread” initiative, which concentrates free COVID-19 testing in municipalities hardest hit with higher than average infection rates to prevent further transmission ofthe virus. Currently, there are 20 targeted communities around the Commonwealth.“Stop the Spread” testing is open to all Massachusetts residents and is not restricted to the residents of the citieswhere the testing site is located. It is a free test and people do not need to have any symptoms to receive a test. For more information on the “Stop the Spread Program,” click here.

VOTE . VOTE . VOTE . VOTEMail-in Ballots are popular during pandemic:

WCVB TV Boston: More than 1 million Massachusetts voters have applied to cast their ballots bymail in the upcoming elections, Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin announced Tuesdaymorning. In light of the COVID-19 crisis, legislators passed a law in July giving all residents theoption to vote by mail this fall.

For the Sept. 1 primary, Galvin said that more than 149,000 ballots have already been returned.Speaking Tuesday, Galvin sought to remind voters that ballots can also be hand-delivered tolocal election offices, drop boxes or early voting sites. ( See box below)His comments come in light of the U.S. Postal Service's warning that it may not be able to deliverall ballots in time.Aug. 26 is the last day for residents to apply to vote by mail, but Galvin suggested voters shouldnot wait until the deadline to decide on how they plan to vote."We hope that people who are thinking of vote-by-mail will do it earlier than the 26th, to eliminateany concern about returning the ballot," he said. "I would suggest to voters, if they're gettingdown toward that deadline, if it's at all possible, they should perhaps consider voting early inperson as opposed to voting by mail because that's probably going to be a more certain andeffective way to cast their ballot."Voters can also track the status of their ballot online at TrackMyBallotMA.com.

CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDSBy Julie Summers Walker

An excerpt from the article:

Provincetown Municipal Airport is beautifully located along the Cape Cod National Seashore andjust two miles from the historic and charming seaport. With a 3,502-foot-long runway, theairport can accommodate most GA aircraft. In the town, you’ll find restaurants, shops, and anactive harbor where you can take whale-watching excursions or watch the local fishermen bringin their catch. A tradition for seafood lovers is the Lobster Pot on Commercial Street in the heartof town. A “town crier” lures you into this historic restaurant that overlooks the harbor.

Help Promote Ocean Safety AwarenessTo help the public understand that with coastline topography changes and sharks and seals in the ocean, any level of activity in the

ocean, whether wading, swimming or surfing will pose a different degree of risk. Everyone going into the ocean should exercise caution and be willing to assume the level of risk associated with their behavior prior to

entering the water. Modifying human behavior is the most effective form of ocean safety.

It is illegal to feed or leave food for wildlife in National Parks. Animals that are fed often lose their fear of people, becoming unpredictable and aggressive

which might lead to serious injury to people and destruction of the wild animal. There is enough natural food to support wildlife so feeding is unnecessary and harmful.

Be sure to remain distant from wild animals; to keep children close and pets leashed. Rangers will continue to cite offenders.

Opening Sept 4th, 2020 6-8p Assorted Appearances, a Fine Art Exhibition atBowersock Gallery

Assorted Appearances is an intriguing exhibition of the unusual which offers thefascinating work of three artists. The work of painters Christopher W. A. Pothier andAlan Ammann are very dissimilar, yet both take viewers for an intense drop down therabbit hole, each with great distinction. They are joined by sculptor Neil Grant, an equally thought-provokingartist.

This is a full-throttle exhibition, a combination of creatives who either stand things on their head, hit you on thehead, and/or head you in a new direction. Each of these men challenge the viewers, with attitude. Aestheticallythe only thing these artists share is quality and skill; all three are mature, seasoned and the top of their careers.

Pothier's work tells stories. His paintings capture moments and slightly askew realities. Ammann, on the otherhand, takes the real world and fractures it. What they both do, in their own way, is take snapshot slices of life, and stand them on their head, hence changing the perspective for the viewer. Grant is an experience of pureemotional release. Many of Pothier’s canvases include the image of a beautiful vista, but it is never the primaryfocus. Whether the canvas depicts real-world or dreamscape there is always a tantalizing subject, an intriguingtale and always social commentary. Narratives come at you fast and unapologetically, his latest body of workhails oddly prophetic.

Ammann's work is done in brilliant colors illuminated by light. A former portrait painter, recognized by theSmithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Ammann switched to abstraction in order to do a more full exploration ofcolor, composition, shapes and movement. Images are juxtaposed and fractured, the composition evokes thefamiliar dropped into an alternate reality.

Sculptor Neil Grant describes his beautifully rendered representational figures as "rebellion in plaster, bronze andresin." Each of his works addresses the human struggle, the strength of spirit, and the challenge of the righteouspath. This show promises to keep you talking for a long, long while.

Connecting Provincetown’s Future: Bradford Access Project UpdateWe are now in the fourth month of construction of the inclined elevator, known as the Bradford Access Project(BAP), that will link downtown Provincetown to the top of High Pole Hill, home of the Pilgrim Monument.

In July, concrete was poured into the walls of the upper platform along with the addition of structural steel. Theelectrical underground conduit continued being laid and concrete work was completed at the upper Monument.Construction is progressing nicely! Enjoy some great drone footage photos of the BAP from Bill Larned, AirVisionary:

A History of "Monumental" Achievement and CoincidencesAs the inclined elevator continues to take shape, it reminded us of, what is perhaps, the original inclined elevator- the railway constructed to carry the granite blocks from MacMillan Wharf to the top of High Pole Hill during theMonument’s construction from 1907 to 1910.The construction of the Pilgrim Monument and the “original” railway is an interesting story. To learn more about itand how it supported construction, please read our latest blog post.

(Truro) Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill is excited to announce a two person show in our Virtual Gallery on linethrough the Castle Hill website: https://www.castlehill.org/gallery-homeThis show was scheduled to be in the Castle Hill gallery this summer, though since all buildings have been closed due toCovid-19 we “pivoted” and have been having offering virtual shows all summer! It’s been great to showcase different artistsand different views.

This show is called Collective Memories with Michael David and Cherie Mittenthal, both artists who work in mixed mediaand encaustic. Michael’s work is a combination of tar paper, dirt, wax and oil.

Top art critic Donald Kuspit has described David’s work in this manner: “Michael David may be the most innovative masterof immediate surface since the Abstract Expressionists. He has acknowledged his debt to Abstract Expressionism, but hehas transformed it. Where the Abstract Expressionist paintings of the forties and fifties seem like modern cave paintings, astheir crude, unfocused, often meandering, turbulent painterliness suggests, David seeks to reinstate prehistory, turning thecave into a temple. His more concentrated, dense and contemplative paintings have the aura of post history. David’sabstract paintings renew immediacy; they reconstitute and strengthen, even apotheosize it. They raise it to a feverishlyfresh intensity with their remarkable touch, indicating they are among the very best painterly abstractions made.

Michael David has been teaching with Castle Hill for the past 3 years and had offered an Artist Residency Master Class atEdgewood Farm for 2 Summers and it was cancelled this year due to Covid-19. He and Cherie partnered up with a newproject together called the Yellow Chair Salon (which is like a virtual Residency) where artists come together and talk abouttheir work virtually. Different artist and critics come and talk about people’s work through out. There are currently 35 peoplesigned up for the next session as we just launched it early last weekend.

Michael also is the owner of M.David and Co. a gallery located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He is an American painter. Born inReno, Nevada, David's family relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where he was raised. He attended SUNY Fredonia for oneyear and in 1976 received a B.F.A. from Parson's School of Design, he’s been making work for the past 40 years that hasreceived critical acclaim.

Cherie Mittenthal’s work is about the “Sense of Place”, the work has a monotone like quality with a very muted palate. Sheworks predominately in Encaustic and pigment stick but also uses ash, dry pigments and other materials.

“This past year 2020 has been a difficult year all around with the loss of my partner, my father and then a world widepandemic. I was happy that through it all I kept painting and making work. Some will never see the light of day and many

pandemic. I was happy that through it all I kept painting and making work. Some will never see the light of day and manyothers are from this new series show here, through the virtual show. Hearts & Dogs seemed to have gotten me through!”says Cherie Mittenthal.
