Red Deer — Completing its 62 nd year of operation, the Provincial 4-H Dairy Show was a huge success. With 62 members exhibiting their projects, the Red Deer Westerner was home to members and projects during this three day event, which ran from July 15- 17. “Due to the long standing tradition, of the Provincial Dairy show, people involved in the dairy industry are very familiar with the format of the event.” commented Leila Hickman Regional Specialist and show organizer. “It’s not unlikely for you to find three generations of family members, watching the show. It truly is a show with a great history.” While the schedule for the three day event leaves little room for down time, these 4-H members always find time to get in a little fun. “Getting to meet new people, and learn more about the industry”, is what keeps Christine Ronald coming back after 9 years. This three day event boasts some of the keenest dairy members across the province. The Dairy show is able to encompass a balanced palate between knowledge challenges, skill competitions and down time. Tuesday night’s quizzes varied on account of age group; however, regardless of age category, the final tallies between team’s cumulative score were just pints within one another. Judging, being that it as a skill that delegates use regularly whether it be with deciding between a pair of shoes or deciding between a cow/calf pair, is always a close competition and the six delegates who score the highest points on their judging are then asked to come back on Wednesday evening for Showring Judging. Thursday morning had the members competing in Showmanship, where it was obvious the amount of work and time these members put into working with their animals. Conformation took place on Thursday afternoon. While the main show is occurring, nominations for the Herdsmanship Award and Club Competition were gathered as well as having Print Marketing posters placed and Overall Aggregate winner points tabulated. Lee Morey (junior), Katelyn Crest (intermediate) and Lee Simanton (senior) were named winners of the Aggregate award within their respective age categories. On account of the talent, dedication and skill present at Dairy a full results page will be posted on the 4-H website. The Provincial 4-H Dairy Show is a result of the generous support of its Title Sponsor, Gas Alberta Inc; along with Co- Sponsors, Alberta Dairy Industry, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development and Westerner Park. 2008 Provincial 4-H Dairy Show - 3

All delegates pay a thirty ($40.00) dollar registration fee (includes GST). Clubs make their combined registration fee cheque payable to the 4-H Foundation of Alberta. This registration fee includes the show entry, t-shirt, parking and admission and five meals. WCC entries for non-4H will be charged a fee of $50.00 and it will include the show entry and five meals. Delegates compete in the following age categories as of January 1 of the current club year:

Junior - 9 to 11 Intermediate - 12 to 14

Senior - 15 to 20

All animals exhibited must be of a recognized North American dairy breed. Also, all animals must be officially registered 4-H project animals. An animal cannot be shown if the 4-H registration list and the calf’s registration papers do not match. If an exhibitor is unable to show his/her animal due to exceptional circumstances, another club member or sibling may show the animal. Exceptional circumstances are those which occur at the last minute, such as illness, injury or a death in the family. Delegates may find the following list of suggested equipment useful in making the showing of their animals as easy as possible: Pail, Grooming Supplies, Stall Cards, Club Banner, Feed, Bedding

Recommended dress code is the 4-H t-shirt provided and white pants, dark belt and hard toed shoes. The shirt is supplied for the delegates by Gas Alberta Inc and the Alberta Dairy Industry. Head bands will be used for show classes, and will be included in the club registration package.

Delegates, leaders, and sponsors may partake in the following meals at no charge: pizza party on Tuesday, breakfast and lunch on both Wednesday and Thursday. Meals for siblings, parents and other guests will be available at a cost of $10 per meal or $25.00 for the five meal package. Meal tickets can be purchased at the Provincial 4-H Dairy show office. There are also concessions open during the show at various locations throughout the Westerner Grounds. Clubs are responsible for keeping their stall and aisle tidy at all times. There are to be no bales or other barriers at the back of the stall. Bales, show equipment and boxes may be used to separate clubs between their designated stalls. All 4-H clubs should bring their club banner for the Parade of Clubs and to display at their stalls. Stalling is provided for 4-H animals according to the program schedule, beginning at noon on Tuesday and ending at 4 pm on Thursday. All 4-H animals must be housed in the areas designated for 4-H. All animals entered must be on the grounds and registered for the show by Tuesday, July 15th at 5:00 pm. The use of tranquillizing products on 4-H animals, immediately proceeding or at any 4-H project event is prohibited. Any animal that is tranquillized cannot be shown at a 4-H event.

This I Believe....

The origin of this is unknown, but the words hold meaning that all of us can strive for in 4-H.

1. The 4-H boy or girl is more important than the 4-H project.

2. 4-H is not trying to replace the home, the church, and the school, only to supplement them.

3. A 4-H boy or girl is the best 4-H exhibit.

4. No 4-H award is worth more than what happens to a 4-H member or leader.

5. Learning how to do something is more important than the doing of it to perfection.

6. Many things in learning are caught rather than taught.

7. A red ribbon 4-Her with a blue ribbon animal is more desirable than a blue ribbon 4-H'er with a red ribbon animal.

8. Learning to do by doing is fundamental in any sound educational program and is what

makes us all 4-H’ers.

9. Generally speaking, there is more than one good way to do most things.

10. Every 4-H member needs to be noticed, to feel important, to be on top, and to be praised.

11. The leader’s job is to teach 4-H members how to think, not what to think.
