2007 UPDATES(BIOGRAPHY, PLANS, PHILOSOPHIES, RECOLLECTIONS, BEST WISHES,FAVORITE THINGS, ETC):

Allred, Garth    No, I am not dead yet, although I have had plenty of chances. After graduating from PFH I went to BYU then served a mission in the Eastern States. Following that time, I served in the Army Reserves--active duty for six months. I married Mary Best from Springville 1n 1963 and the above children were born by her. I taught Seminary in Richfield, Monroe, and Gunison before moving to Provo and writing curriculum for CES. Our next move took us to Tallahassee, Florida, where I served as Institude Director and obtained a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have, since that time, maintained a private therapy practice while teaching in CES. Our next move took us to St. George, Utah, and then to Laie, Hawaii,

were I was professor of Religion and later Dean of Religion. During that time I had a chance to teach at the BYU Jerusalm Center for Near Eastern Studies. I retired from teaching in 2000 due to health a personal issues. I have had a liver transplant and recently open heart surgery. My wife, Mary, passed away after moving back to Utah in 2003 due to a brain tumor. My present wife, Noriko, was a former student at BYU-Hawaii. She loves cats and we have a great Black Lab we call Ski-Lani. Now days, my social life consists of visiting doctors. It was nice of David Thayne to make contact with me. He and I (along with a brother and sister) sang in the Tabernacle Choir together for a brief time. I have many good memories about PHS.

Allred, Lavon [Hatfield]   DeceasedObituary submitted by Venita Parry Roylance: From the Daily Herald Archives:

Date July 16, 2002 Lena LaVon Hatfield Lena LaVon Hatfield, 63, returned to her heavenly father with a beautiful smile on her face July 13, 2002, due to an extended illness. She was born July 6, 1939 in Hill Spring, Alberta Canada. She was the daughter of Archibald Reece and Anne Smith Allred. She was the third of five children. LaVon was

raised in Hill Spring until she was thirteen, she then moved to Provo, UT, where she graduated from Provo High School in 1957. She married her sweetheart, whom she loved dearly for forty-five cherished years, in the Salt Lake LDS temple soon after graduation. They had a happy life together raising their three sons. LaVon enjoyed every minute that she was able to spend spoiling her ten grandchildren. She spent her life in service working as a nurse's aid and serving in various organizations of the church. In her later years she served her fellow man by participating in a family home evening program and made knit hats for a church humanitarian program. She blessed her family with her love for music and story telling. LaVon was a gifted mother, cook, canner and peacemaker. She liked to read and was the number one fair-weathered fan of the BYU football team with frequent outbursts during the games. In her younger years she was "just one of the guys, " and could not be out done by her husband or sons at any outdoor activity. Her greatest love in life was being with her family and defending her grandchildren from their parents' discipline. She is survived by her dear husband Jerrald Hatfield; her mother, Anne Smith Allred; three sisters and one brother, Colene Oviatt, JoAnne Dowdle, Lori Rassmussen, and McKay Allred; three sons, Steve (Janine), Neal (Kathy), and Richard (Jennifer); and ten beautiful grandchildren. Her father, Archibald Reece Allred, preceded her in death. We all will miss the love and comfort she has shared with us. We love you grandma! Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Hobble Creek 2nd Ward Chapel located at 1440 E. 900 South in Springville. Friends and family may call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S. Springville or at the church one hour prior to the services. 2007 UPDATES: I haven't made it to any of the reunions and haven't seen David since high school, but I had an immediate picture of him pop into my head of almost 50 years ago. I'll send a current picture of myself as soon as I go to glamour photos. HA! My husband Richard and I live in Edmond, Oklahoma. Say where? No, it is not as pretty as Utah, but someone has to live here. We have five wonderful daughters and one superb son that have managed to give us fifteen outstanding, talented, loving and gifted grandchildren. Since leaving Provo I have lived in California,

Utah, Colorado, Texas, Kentucky and Oklahoma. I speak the native language of all six states and know where to pan for gold in most of them. I love genealogy work and I have taught genealogy on two different college campuses. I am working on my ninth family history book. We have had a life full of wonderful travel, service, joy and just enough sorrow to keep us humble. It was a shock to find out that I didn't just grow smarter and wiser in all areas of life, in many I only got older. Old ladies crying or having a temper fit really isn't pretty. 2007 UPDATE: My husband and I have lived in Bountiful for 23 years. Prior to that I lived in Provo, Springville and Pleasant Grove. I have

also lived in Albuquerque and in several California cities.

Ten years ago I retired from employment with BYU and the Church Educational System. Since then I worked in the Salt Lake Temple for six years and attended Weber State for three years, where I majored in Interior Design.

In my younger years I enjoyed tennis, dancing and playing the organ and piano. Today I enjoy gentle yoga, early-morning walks with my husband, growing flowers and being with my family. And thanks to my dear high school friends Evelyn, Margene and Venita, I have been bitten with the family history bug. This has provided many choice experiences that I treasure.

Jan and I love and appreciate our six children and 14 grandchildren. We are blessed with excellent health and many choice blessings. I truly enjoy this season of my life.

Barber, David    (as dictated by David on Jan. 30): I am enjoying the good weather and life here on Maui. I have retatively good health--other than recovering from caterac surgery. The recovery is going well; I expect to be fine. I am the proud father of 4 children by Caroly Jensen Pooley. I also have 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. I really enjoy this contact. I would love to hear from any of you. If you come to Maui, I have a place you can stay

2007 UPDATES: Hi David,

I check into the website every once in a while just to see what is going on. I don't think I will post much but I will try to get a recent picture of me posted before the reunion. My guess is that most of our class don't use internet based communication. Activity might increase as more people find

out about it and we get closer to the reunion.

I have logged in about 10 times so if the other 25 people also logged in 10 times that could account for 250 of the 700.

You might suggest that classmates in a given area try to get together for lunch every month or two. You could post the date, time and location of those events on the website. If the social butterflies in the class would get something started maybe some of the rest of us would join in once in a while. You could send a monthly email letter with the dates and times of the lunches and that alone would get people thinking about it.

For the record, I usually contribute financially when I don't want to do any

Page 12: Provo High School 1957 Memory Book

of the work.

2007 UPDATES: Hi (Classmates) - I bumped into Margene Simmons in the Missionary Training Center's health center where Janet and I were getting our Japenese Encephalitis shots prior to going to the Singapore Mission in two days. She showed me the web site, and since today is our P-day, I'm dropping you a note. Nice going on the reunion work! I enjoyed reading about the kids who have

reported in. Keep after them all! We will be serving in the Singapore Mission for 18 months (unless they extend us), so we should be home in time for the reunion. We will serve in a country outside of Singapore, but won't know where until we get there and the President interviews us. The mission includes East and West Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, The Maldives, Diego Garcia, and Pakistan. We'll be in one of these.

A little data on us for you: Married Janet Bird from Springville Eleven kids, 39 grandkids, and five in the oven that we know of. Live down the street from Lonnie Gleave, around corner from Rush Sumpter, and a block from Sally Clements. Taught and coached 5 years in California High School, 11 years at BYU Hawaii, and 23 years at BYU Provo.

Retired July 1, 2005 I was in Kanab in September, and an old fellow there told me Benny Cloward passed away about two weeks earlier. Also, you probably know but Mary Mecham died in June 2000. I read your comments about BY High. The reason they seem like our graduates is because they are. BY High closed after our Junior year and the seniors finished at Provo. At least, that's what I remember. Aloha, see ya in a year and a half. Mark Clarke P.S. If I knew the computer better I'd send you some money, but I'm not sure what I'm doing, so now you'll just have to wait til we return.

greatgrandchildren (all living in Arizona). We have a home in Mt. Pleasant Utah with plans to be snow-birds and spend the winters in Arizona, and summers in Utah, however, I am currently serving in the LDS Church as first counsler in the Mt.

Pleasant second ward Bishopric. So our snow-bird plans are on hold.

My hobbies have encluded flying, golf, hunting, fishing and most all other outdoor activities.

Coomes, Merril    Working on this!

I do plan on attending the Class Reunion in August. I will submit that information to the web site to inform the committee. It looks like a great time for everyone. I only attended the 20th Class Reunion, but the 50th seems like a milestone reunion.

Thanks again for the email update,

Merril

Dickson, Brent   FROM 1987 BIOGRAPHY: HOBBIES: basketball, skiing, astronomy, church, OCCUPATION: owner and President Signature Co 2007 UPDATES: Jeniel and I are happily married and living in Sunnyvale, California, about 45 miles south of San Francisco. We have lived here 36 years and so this is home to us. We come to Provo a few times a year to see friends and relatives and that is home too.

We have five sons and one daughter and 25 grandchildren. It seems that we will not have more grandchildren, but we now have 4 Great Grandchildren and another on the way. When we all get together including spouses there are more than 40 of us. That is difficult to believe, especially when you consider how young we of the class of 57 are.

Our family has been the center of our lives and we love them dearly and spend time with them most days. We own a family business with all the boys working there and our daughter keeps close tabs on us, for which we are grateful.

We also have enjoyed serving in the church. We just returned from a full time mission to the south of England in August. We loved the

Page 21: Provo High School 1957 Memory Book

people there and some days we wish we were back in England. Most of the time we are happy to be home.

It has been a good life and we have had a lot of wonderful friends including those from the class of 57. We have been truly blessed and have learned how much the Lord loves all of us.

If any of you come to the bay area, we would love to see you. All the best,

April 2007

Our children gave us a wonderful 50th wedding anniversary party last summer. They

picked us up in a 56 Chev. Belaire and to took us to a Sock Hop over at the church. When we arrived we saw a group of family and friends dressed in Poodle skirts and Levisand T shirts. They had a shirt for Brent and a Poodle skirt for Jeniel.

We danced to music ranging from Rock Around the Clock to our love song, True Love, from High Society which we saw on our honeymoon in 1956.

It has been 50 years of bliss and we now have a direct descendants numbering 52including 6 children with spouses, 25 grandchildren with many spouses and 7 great grandchildren.

We have been truly blessed!

The party took us back 50 years and made us look forward to the PHS reunion comingthis summer. See you all there!

LoveBrent and Jeniel

2007 UPDATES: I loved life with all of you at Provo High and remember you with warmth and affection. After high school I attended BYU, graduating in English with a minor in business education. In 1960, I married Gary Anderson, also a Provo High graduate. I taught freshman English at BYU while he finished undergraduate work. We then moved to Berkeley, CA where Gary went to law school at the University of California, Berkeley. I continued to teach junior high English and then English as a second language in the Oakland Adult Education program. Returned to school for a masters degree and then worked as the curriculum coordinator for the Oakland adult education program until our last child was born in 1978.

In 1990, Gary and I founded the EB Medical Research Foundation. As many of you know, we lost our first and last child to that disease. I have been the CEO and President of that organization for the past 16 years. We have raised more than 15 million dollars for research at Stanford University. We are finally close to a treatment for the form of EB that took the lives of our children--a very exciting time for us.

We still live in the S.F. Bay area in a small hill town called Piedmont. We have loved living in California because of its beauty, weather and diversity. It is great to have pansies blooming when snow sits on the ground elsewhere!

Our greatest joys come from our family. We now have ten grandchildren ranging from ages two to sixteen years--all delightful, beautiful and brilliant (just like yours)!

I expect you are feeling much like I am--how did we get to this age so quickly! How fortunate we are to still be friends after 50 years! I look forward to seeing you all in August, 2007.

P.S. Many thanks to the reunion committe and the web site group for keeping us connected!

sell fast so I am always crocheting. I even crochet at stop lights. My husband and I have also taken up Duplicate Bridge and we play once or twice a week. We go to Palm Springs in Dec. each year for a tournament. We are working for our "Life Masters" points but I don't think we will make it because it has taken us two years to get just l4 points. I retired from Hughes Aircraft/Raytheon after 25 years three years ago. To keep busy, I taught Gospel Doctrine and was an ordinance worker in Los Angeles Temple. I was divorced in 1972.

My daughters put me on LDSSingles.com 2-1/2 years ago where I met my husband. His wife had passed away and he has 8 grown children and 29 grandchildren, so together we have 10 children and 32 grandchildren. We were married in the St. George Temple.

We love to golf and travel and do a lot of both. I'd love to come to the reunion, as I missed the 40th reunion.

I love going back up to Provo and remembering the old days going to Cook's Ice Cream (fresh peach), Sutton's Cafe, Clark's for her and the cologne they would spray on the clothes when they boxed them for you! Also swimming at Park-Ro-Shea and Saratoga Springs, which was out in the "boonies" then!

2007 UPDATES(BIOGRAPHY, PLANS, PHILOSOPHIES, RECOLLECTIONS, BEST WISHES,FAVORITE THINGS, ETC):

Marion Lund I was born in Malad, Oneida County, Idaho on April 2, 1939. At the time of my birth my parents were living in Eagar, Apache County, Arizona. My mother felt that the only place to have babies was in Malad, Idaho with her doctor, Dr. Maeby. My sister Catherine Louise (Katie) ad my brother, William Guy Jr. (Billie) were also born in Malad. Katie was born December 9, 1935 and Billie was born November 11, 1937. My younger sister, Lois Ann Lund, was born in Eagar, Apache County, Arizona, just six days after my mother's birthday on May 26, 1943. Dad said he wanted Mom to know that babies could be born in Arizona, too.

I come from good stock. My grandfather on my mother's side, William Henry Richards was a bishop and stake president in Malad for many years. One day I was on an airplane, and seated a few rows ahead of me, was Elder LeGrand Richards. There was an empty seat on the aisle next to him, so, I got up my courage and sat next to him. I said, "Elder Richards, my nane is Marion RICHARDS Lund. I don't know my history very well, but could you tell me if we are related? "He said, "Where are you from?" I replied, "I was born in Malad Idaho." He said, "William Henry Richards? "And I said, "He is my grandfather!" Elder Richards said, "Oh, he was a great stake president for twenty-five years, and when we released him, we put his son THOMAS in for another twenty-five. How are you connected?" I answered, "My mother is CATHERINE. "He responded, "Oh, Kate?" I said, "That is my mother. "Then, he said, "I've eaten many a fine meal in your family home. We have this agreement, you don't say anything bad about our Richards line, and we won't say anything bad about yours. No, we are not related."

My grandparents on my father's side were real pioneers in Arizona. My Grandfather, William Lund, was the son of William Wilson Lund and Annie Elizabeth Wiltbank. My grandmother was Lucinda Margaret Lee, daughter of John Willard Lee and Lucinda Margaret Clark. They were called under the direction of Erastus Snow to leave St George, Utah, to settle the north-eastern part of the territory of Arizona in 1879. Grandma was reported to be the first white child born in Apache County, Arizona. She was born in a wagon box in Amity, Arizona, on ground that has become known as the D.C. Martin land. (The actor, John Wayne, bought a ranch somewhere near there.)

Page 41: Provo High School 1957 Memory Book

Great grandpa Lund homesteaded the Lund ranch just a couple of miles North of a little town of Nutrioso, Arizona. This beautiful little valley was home to them and they thought there couldn't be any better place on the earth. My father was born in Nutrioso, on October 10, 1898. Nutrioso is a Spanish word which means Beaver/Bear, so, my father was born on Beaver/Bear Creek. He was the oldest of sixteen children. My grandmother was a granddaughter of John Doyle Lee, which means that I am a great, great grandson of that great man.For the first ten years of my life we lived in Eagar, Arizona, where my folks had a grocery store and still maintained the cattle ranch at the old homestead fifteen miles south-east of Eagar. We helped on the ranch with the branding, roping, dehorning, etc. We would also help drive the cattle to the summer range which was higher in the mountains. Dad used to say that I was a pretty good cowboy.

We went to school in the Eagar Elementary Public School where Mom was a teacher. We couldn't be too bad, or Mom would know about it almost immediately. In this small school some of the grades were combined in one class room with the same teacher. I don't remember any of my teachers names during those early years, but I do remember some of the teachers that I had in Primary. I remember going to Sister Kartchner's home to work on my bandalo and learn some of the Trail Blazer songs. I also remember Utahna Butler who married Dallas Butler. I always thought she was one of the prettiest women I had ever met.

In Eagar, Dad was in a bishopric with Bishop Paris Ashcroft and Ether Brown. One Sunday as they met in bishopric meeting they were discussing the topic of REVERENCE and what they could do to increase the reverence in their meetings. Ether Brown turned to dad and said, "Guy, if you could control your family, the bishop and I can handle the rest of the ward." Now, I'm not saying that we were rowdy, noisy, or rambunctious or anything, but, well....

One time when Dad was conducting the church meeting, Katie was acting out and running up and down the aisles and up on the stand where Dad was, so, Dad picked her up and started to take her out of the meeting. She cried, "Don't beat me Daddy, I'll be good. Don't beat me." It really embarrassed him and Mom.

When I was about ten years old, we moved to Provo, Utah, and took over the Beck Motel at 250 South University Avenue. We moved to Utah so that we could attend Utah schools and especially BYU. Katie, Bill and I all graduated from there. ( I think another reason we moved was so that we didn't marry our cousins. Eagar was a small town and just about everyone was related. We used to say that you couldn't throw rocks without hitting a relative. Then too, Leiloni Lee was looking awfully good.) ( I think another reason was that my best friend was Billie Jack Hall. He was always getting into trouble and I would have been right there with him. I think he ended up in prison or something.)

We were very active in sports, and I was a fierce competitor. In fact, the older I get, the better I was. Ha! I played basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball, and football. Also, I boxed in college.

Our family was well thought of in the church and the community. I think we were fortunate to have good friends to associate with and I was especially blessed to have a big brother so I could follow in his footsteps. He was a year ahead of me in school and set a pretty high standard to follow. He was well liked and made friends easily.

Mom and Dad got us involved in music when we moved to Provo. They had a band in elementary school so Bill and I joined. He played the trumpet and I liked to pound on things, so I played the drums. Stanley Brady was the band teacher and took a lot of time with me to show me how to do certain things. He stayed with us when we went to Jr. High School. I expanded my knowledge of percussion to include the timpani, or kettle drums. I got to be pretty good and was recommended by Mr. Brady to the all-state band in Salt Lake. (Normally, it was only High School students that got to play in the all-state band. We played a special concert in the tabernacle on Temple Square. When we played The Stars and Stripes Forever, it gave me goose bumps. That number really highlights the timpani.

In 1956, when I was a junior in high school, I was sent by the Kiwanis Club in Provo to the Key Club International convention in Dallas, Texas. We had a great time and got to meet some star athletes (Frank Gifford who played for the Dallas Cowboys) and some movie stars (Kim Novack in a filmy neglige) she made quite an impression on me. As soon as I returned from Dallas, I was met at the train station and whisked off to Utah Boy's State to participate in the mock government and civic affairs program. I learned a lot about the legislative process, and I associated with a lot of nice people. (I even had a pillow fight with Don Fullmer, younger brother of Gene Fullmer, the heavy weight champion of the world. Don went on to be a very famous boxer, also. However, I knocked his block off in a pillow fight.)

I graduated from Provo High School in 1957 and began college at Brigham Young University that fall. Mom and Dad never did have much money to spare, so the children were expected to work and help put themselves through school. Dad helped some with tuition, but I had several odd jobs such as mowing lawns and taking care of yards. I also helped in the motel by cleaning rooms and taking care of the motel. During the summer we swept the leaves from the parking lot, and during the winter we shoveled the snow. It seems that there was always something to keep us busy. We rented the rooms and took care of the business. Some times we would stay up late into the night and Dad would give us half of what ever we rented after a certain time.

When I started college, Dad went with me to see Mr. Nichols at First Security Bank. We borrowed $500.00 so that I could pay my tuition and books. During the semester I worked and paid the money back to the bank. The next semester we did the same thing. After a couple of semesters Mr. Nichols said to me, " You don't have to bring your dad with you anymore. Just come in and sign for what you need." I felt that I had finally reached adulthood and was trusted enough to have my own credit. I appreciated Dad's help in getting me started. It taught me the importance of being fiscally responsible. That lesson has stuck with me all my life, and I have always maintained the attitude that we should pay our own way and be responsible for our money and our debts.

Page 42: Provo High School 1957 Memory Book

I had a lot of fun the first couple of years of college. I joined a social unit, the Val Hyrics. We had a lot of social activities with the female counterparts and it was great. I dated a lot. My grades didn't do so well. After two years I decided that I would accept a mission call. In 1959 I was assigned to the West Central States which included the states of Montana, Wyoming, and part of North and South Dakota. President Casper W. Merrill from Logan, Utah and his wife were the mission presidents. About halfway through my mission they were released and Grant G. Wooley and his wife were called to preside. My first area was Missoula Montana and my first companion was Clayton Huber from Lapoint, Utah. After a couple of months I had trained him well enough that he was made assistant to the president. I worked with another Elder Lund, Grant Lund. They called us brother and sister Lund..... my first name is Marion..... Hmmmmm.(Grant is the brother to Gerald Lund who is the author of The Work and The Glory series of books. He came out to the same mission field when Grant went home.)

I was transferred to Bismark, North Dakota. I also served in Mandan and Dickenson, North Dakota. It was especially bad in the winter. My companion and I had the only baptisms that came out of that district in years. We baptized Gwendolyn Hazel Chadwick and her son Larry. Larry was 12 years old and was our only Deacon for a long time.

My next area was Lander, Wyoming where I worked with an Elder who had emotional problems. He was so shy that he would not talk to anyone... including me. About 20 years after my mission I was working in Burley, Idaho. I was playing church ball and there on the basketball floor was this same Elder (Lynn Hanks). I couldn't believe it was the same Elder. He was now a 70, Stake Mission Leader, married with children and very out-going. What a change!

From Lander we went to the Ft. Washakie Indian reservation. It was about 15 miles out of Lander. We lived in the little white chapel and worked with the Shoshone and Arapaho Indians. While there a brother Parent gave me an Indian name. "Big Stink Foot". I don't know where he came up with that one.

My brother, Bill was serving a mission in England during part of the time I was out. Dad was having quite a struggle keeping us both out at the same time. He went to the High Priests of the stake and asked if they would help. He sent me $20.00 and the High Priests were to send me $80.00. The High Priests only sent a couple of checks and then nothing. I was too embarrassed to tell Dad that I needed more money. We ate a lot of peanut butter and crackers. (We called peanut butter "Salvation Salve". Whenever dad would send a check he would say, "Well son, you just sold another calf" When we were young and helping with the branding dad would brand a calf for us. He used to ask us if we wanted a steer calf or a heifer calf. We learned quickly that steer calves brought more money at auction, but heifer calves would build a herd. We took the heifer calves and built a herd. By the time my mission was over, my herd was gone.

My next transfer made me a Supervising Elder. I went to Butte, Montana and then to Whitehall and finally Bozeman, Montana. I finished out my mission in Bozeman. At the conclusion of my mission I returned to Provo and began working for Vista Optical. It was owned by Warner Murphy. He also owned Sisken Optical where Bill worked. Mr. Murphy thought that If I was as good of a worker as Bill, I would do all right. I was, and I did.

In 1962 I went to the Hill Cumorah Pageant with Dr. Harold I. Hansen. Six Elders supervised three bus loads of girls all the way to New York and back. Talk about the "fox in the hen house". What an opportunity! That Eastern States Mission was the only mission in the world that got a two week vacation... with girls.

I was selected by Dr. Hansen to play the part of the resurrected Christ. It was the final scene of the pageant, and the culmination of the whole story. It was really a special experience. I read and re-read III Nephi where it talks about the great destruction that came upon the earth and the weeping and wailing and the darkness and the silence at the time of the Savior's crucifiction and resurrection. I gained a greater appreciation for the Savior. One of the participants in the pageant was a little Russian woman who was not a member of the church. Her daughter was a member, but not the mother. One night after the performance she sought me out. I was still dressed in the robes and had the beard and wig, etc. She said she wanted to be baptized and wanted me to do it. The next day we went to Rochester to a chapel and I baptized her. (Years later her daughter served a mission call under me at the Provo LDS Employment center.)

When I came home from the pageant I continued to date some special girls. They were mostly Cougarettes, flag twirlers and cheer leaders. I also dated the vice president of culture at BYU. Her name was Maria Toronto from Spanish Fork. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed dancing at the Terrace Ballroom in Salt Lake City. The singles dances were held every Thursday night.

On Thanksgiving Thursday in 1962 I took a date to the dance. Since it was a singles dance you were not supposed to take a date. My date danced the first dance with her cousin, Robert Clark, then he brought her back to me. While they were dancing, I had an opportunity to scope the crowd. I saw Ralle't Christiansen out on the dance floor. My, she looked good! I had known her for a long time because my brother, Bill, had dated her sister Danielle. Ralle't was always a cute little thing, but was always too young. When I was sixteen, she was only twelve. When I was twenty and went on a mission, she was only sixteen. But now, I was twenty three and she was nineteen. She had really grown up! I took Linda, my date, to the sidelines and cut in on Ralle't. The music ended all too soon. Then, the announcer said, "This next dance will be a ladies choice." Ralle't said, "Oh, Dear, I'll have to take you to the sidelines, this dance is a ladies choice." I thought to myself, "You little snipe", and I started walking away. She grabbed my arm and said, "I was only kidding. There is no one I would rather dance with than you!" She melted my heart. I tried to take her home from the dance, but she said, "My mother always said, ‘You go home with those what brung ya'" I WENT HOME FROM THAT DANCE AND TOLD MY MOTHER THAT I HAD MET THE GIRL THAT I WAS GOING TO MARRY!! We dated quite steadily for the next month, and on December 23, Joseph Smith's birthday, I asked her to marry me. She agreed, and two months later on February 28, 1963 we were

Page 43: Provo High School 1957 Memory Book

married in the Logan Temple by President A. George Raymond.

After five or six months we decided it was time to have a baby. Our baby daughter Andrea Ralle't Lund was born March 30, 1964, during my last year of college. Rallet didn't have an easy time with child birth because of her previous back surgery. The doctors worked hard and really pulled hard with forceps to help the baby be born. We said a lot of prayers in her behalf and the Lord blessed us with a beautiful baby girl that looked as if she had just gone twelve rounds with Muhammed Ali... and lost. I thought she was beautiful even though she was so beaten up.

I finally got my degree from Brigham Young University in 1965 in Sociology and Human Development and Family Relationships. It took me a little longer than most because I had to improve the grades that I had my first few years of school when I played. I took school very seriously and re-took many classes. After a lot of hard work and with the encouragement of my wife, I finally pulled my grade-point up to the honor roll my last two semesters. Twenty five years later at a fireside where I was asked to speak, I saw Dr Joseph Simmons, the chairman of the Sociology Department at BYU. When I greeted him by name he asked if he knew me. I told him I had taken several classes from him...." no", I said, ...." I only took one class from you, but I took it several times". He just chuckled. He was tough on grades.

We moved our little family to Pleasanton, California, where I worked as a dormitory counselor for the Job Corps. I was scared to death! I had a dormitory of eighty Job Corps boys. They ranged in age from 16 to 21. They were either high school drop-outs or had been kicked out. They were from all over the united states. Most of them were Black or Hispanic and were tough dudes. I had never been around Blacks much before and I didn't know what to expect, and the only words I knew in Spanish were swear words.

My first day at Camp Parks Job Corps Center, as I was walking across campus, I saw a great big Black guy coming right at me. He was shaking his finger at me and saying, "I know you, you are the guy that called me BABY HUEY when I played basketball at Utah State." I had been dating a flag twirler and had a seat on the second row from the floor, and yes, I used to get pretty exercised during the games and did what I could to rattle the players and the referees. Brother ! Did I remember him? I'll say I did! His name was Darnel Haney and he was 6'8" tall. I was scared to death!~ He put out his great big hand and shook mine and welcomed me to Camp Parks. Whew! We had a good laugh and before long, we were good friends. When they announced a new Job Corps Center being opened in Clearfield, Utah, I jumped at the chance to move back to Utah (and with a thousand dollar raise.)

We lived in an apartment in Clearfield, Utah until we had someone try and break into our apartment. When that happened we decided to look elsewhere for an apartment. We had the newspaper on the dash of the car with the apartments for rent section when we stopped for gas. The fellow washing our windows asked if we were looking for a place to rent. We told him we were and he said he had a house that he was buying and needed to get out of it. We could take over his payments for just a few dollars a month more than we had been paying for rent. We took it. It was in Layton (Robin's Park, just off Hill Field Road. Lisa and Shaun were born while we lived in Layton. Lisa on February 20, 1968 and Shaun March 17, 1969.

Also while we were in Layton, we got word that Ralle't had gone through the change of life and we would not be able to have any more children. She knew then why the prompting had been so strong to have another baby so soon after Lisa. A few years later we had an opportunity to adopt a baby. We had talked about it before, but I was hesitant. I felt that if Heavenly Father wanted us to have more children, we would have our own. Then, we got a call from Katie and Ron telling us about two girls who were having babies and going to give them up for adoption. We decided to go for it. We were all set when the phone call came that a little girl had been born and all we had to do was go to Washington D.C. and pick her up. Then, we got a disappointing call saying that we could not have her because the grandparents lived close to us and they would know. We were sick and just about gave up. They told us the next baby would be born in a few months. The first little girl was sent to a family in Arizona. She was a little blond, angular faced girl that went to a family of blonds.... with angular faces.

In September 1972 we got a call saying that our baby was born. It was a girl. The mother didn't have any insurance and had to have the baby "C" section. We would have to have the money to pay her hospital bill before they would release the baby to us. I sold my small fishing boat, my Radial arm saw, and collected debts from several people who owed me money. I had about $800.00 saved toward a new boat. We gathered all we could and sent it off to Virginia to pay the hospital bill. Instead of our having to pay for airline tickets, Katie and Ron said they would bring the baby when Ron came to LDS general conference. He was a bishop and had a ticket to conference. Wendy was born on September 28, 1972, and Ron brought her to us on an airplane about October 3, 1972. She was a little wrinkled pumpkin, just five days old. We took the whole family to the airport to pick her up and tears were shed all around. Shaun believed that babies were delivered at the airport on a big silver bird. No stork story for him!

We had to wait a whole year before the adoption could be finalized, but finally the day came when we went to the court house in Farmington, Utah and appeared before the judge with our petition. He asked if anyone in the court room had any reason why this adoption should not be granted, no one spoke up. He banged the gavel and pronounced her ours. Wendy had been very quiet up to this point and when the final decree was pronounced, she let out a "YIPPI!". The judge commented that it sounded as if she was in agreement, too, so it was final. We were then able to take her to the temple and have her sealed to us. I have teased Wendy many times about how she could have been named HYDROSWIFT, or EVENRUDE, or CHRIS CRAFT or something similar because she was my boat money. She has been a lot more fun than a boat!

During the time I worked for Job Corps I went to school at the University of Utah and got a master's degree in Manpower Planning and Administration through the college of business. I graduated in 1972. A few years later I left Job Corps to accept a position as Residential Treatment Director for Project Reality, a drug treatment program in Salt Lake City. I worked with drug addicts for about a year, but didn't enjoy it much. I didn't see much success. A few weeks later we moved to Canada to go into real estate with some LDS

Page 44: Provo High School 1957 Memory Book

people.

We have seen many miracles in our lives and seen how we were guided in the choices that we made. It was miraculous how we got to Canada. We sold our home in less than a week and were on the road for Victoria, British Columbia, where Rusty Butler, my brother-in-law was teaching at the University of Victoria. We became Landed Immigrants, took the real estate licence exam and passed it and started selling real estate. We made enough money that first year to build a home in Orem, Utah, and planned on moving back. However, the stake president, Howard Biddulph, had other plans. He asked me to be a branch president, build a chapel and fill it. Then, we could feel good about going back to the United States. We stayed three more years, built the Sidney Branch chapel and brought 14 families into the church. When we baptized Fred and Janet McCullough, I knew that we could go back to Utah. A month later, we were packed and gone.

We moved to Utah but couldn't find work. I spent 6 months unemployed. We had rented our house and couldn't get the renters to move so, we rented. I finally took a job selling cars for Rusty Butler's dad in Ontario, Oregon. We sold our Orem home to liquidate our debts in Canada and moved to Ontario. I sold cars for a year and then got a chance to manage a Deseret Industries store in Ontario. That was April 12, 1979. I was forty years old when I began that new career.

Deseret Industries moved us to Burley, Idaho, where we stayed for three years and then they said they needed us in Denver, Colorado to take on three stores. After a couple of years I received a promotion to be Area Manager over the Employment Centers in the Northern Plains. I had employment centers in Billings, Cheyenne, Kansas City, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, and Denver. I enjoyed traveling and training and then I asked to come home to Utah. We moved to Provo in 1986, built us a new home and don't care if we never move again. I continued to work for the Church as manager of employment services over the Utah South Area. I had nine employment centers to supervise and about 60 missionaries to run them. I retired October 31, 2002, after 23 ½ years of working for the Church.

During the last fourteen years we have been involved in service to the community and the church. I served as branch president over an apartment house branch for three of those years. Rallet and I have been ordinance workers at the Mt. Timpanogas temple. Rallet and I will finish putting together three more family history books and then serve somewhere else. We have all of our children married and sealed in the temple and have 25 grandchildren.

Our first Grandson, Kazj Briggs is serving a mission in Louisville, Ky.

Since retirement I have helped Rallet with her jewelry business, "Rallet Designs" . We now have ten designers in our company and have added a studio onto our home to accommodate the business. We have raised money for Cancer Survivors, Hope home (a shelter home for pregnant un-wed girls), Women Helping Women, Catholic family and Child Services, Hospice and the Humanitarian Services of the LDS Church. We are enjoying being creative and making beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry. We have twenty five stores carrying our product and have our own web site. Rallet.biz. Check us out.

2007 UPDATES: My career was in clinical social work for Valley Mental. I worked for 25 years. It was a job I still miss. Some of us need to move on and leave the jobs for the next generation.

Since I retired in 1998 from Social Work I have been traveling. I dearly loved my job, but traveling has been a good replacement. I have traveled in Europe, Eastern Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America and Australia. My goal now is to go to Paris, France.

I started Art School three years ago. I am painting in watercolors. I lived in Wyoming for 7 years and currently in Salt Lake City.

I have one child, my daughter Lisa. She lives in France Utah. She loves the country. (esp. hiking in southern Utah.) She is divorced with no children.

FROM 1987 BIOGRAPHY: HOBBIES: hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling, camping, family OCCUPATION: printer Daily herald, former foreman sports editor Moabe, Ut.

2007 UPDATES: I am currently working for the Daily Herald of Provo but in the new Pleasant Grove office. In this office we cover the news and advertising for all of the North County weekly newspapers, from Orem to Lehi plus more. I am a graphic designer, which means I have a job sitting in front of a Macintosh computer building advertisements for the newspapers. My grandsons wish they had the same opportunity. I have been back at the Herald for over 20 years after leaving and going to Moab for about 18 years.

In Moab, we raised all of our kids, and of course I am very proud of all of them. My wife Naoma Sorensen Milner, also a PS grad, class of 1960, were involved in just about everything we could get into. I helped organize the world famous Jeep Safari in 1970, and led trails for 8 years. It was "GREAT". While doing this we met a lot of very wonderful families, some of whom we have remained close friends since.

Both Naoma and I have had some health problems, who hasn't, but she has had more than her share.

We share 13 grandchildren and one great grandson. 2 of them live in California so we don't get to see them often, but they are both in college and are too busy for family stuff anyway. The others live nearby. Our oldest granddaughter, Shawnelle, is currently Miss Deaf Utah. She went to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Miss USA contest, but as she said, I am glad I didn't win. It is for a 2 year term and she wants to get married and raise children. I have two others in college and the rest are still in high school, jr. high or grade school.

We live in Provo with no plans on leaving for awhile. Maybe if I ever retire we will relocate but no plans of that right now. I have too much fun going to work.

Morgan, Michael    Following HS graduation, I attended and graduated from BYU(1961). I married Mary Lee Thatcher and we trekked off to Cleveland, Ohio to attend Dental school at Case Western Reserve. We graduated in 1966 and looked for a town that needed a dentist and where we were needed to assist the church to grow. We settled in Zanesville, Ohio. A small town of about 35,000, about one hour east of Columbus. We have been busy in church and community activies and rearing seven children. We have 21 grandchildren and are "empty nesters." We are selling our dental practice and preparing to leave on a church mission in the near future. I have served as Bishop twice, Counselor in SP twice and numerous other positions in the church. I am currently on the HC. I have been involved in the Scouting programs and am currently

serving as Council president. Mary Lee and I have just celebrated our 45th anniversary.

2007 UPDATES: I am fast reaching the end of a list which I made in high school and labeled, "This will

never happen to me!" Never say NEVER!! I get teary when I think of beautiful fresh youth trembling on the brink of life as they

gratuate from high school, full of hopes and dreams with the energy and desire to fulfill them all. "Older and wiser" is my current label. It is humbling and heartening

to see what I have not and have achieved. Life is good, but not what I expected! I am married to Dr. M. Lyman Moody who practiced Internal Medicine in Provo for 30 years, and most of those years we were both married to another spouse. He lost his wife to death from cancer; my husband asked me for a divorce after 30 years of marriage. During those 30 years I lived in Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Austin, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, and Salt Lake City. I came back to Provo (much to my delight and surprise) after a mutual friend introduced me to Lyman and we were married in May, 1997. After graduating from BYU in Child Development and Family Relations in 1961, I served a mission for the LDS Church in France. Since I have married Lyman Moody, we have served two more missions, based in Madrid, Spain, and now in Frankfurt, Germany. I am the contented mother of three wonderful children, two sons and a daughter, all married and have 7 grandchildren (soon to be 8). Aug 10, 2006 email: I have been cruising the fabulous website. I have not taken the time to check it for many months. It is wonderful!!! But, I must admit, it is shocking to see how many of our number are no longer with us, and listening to that music of our youth as I see those faces so familiar in the era that we listened to that music brings me to almost a wrenching nostalgia! I noticed that JoAnn Means is posted as one of the "lost" ones. She was in my ward, Provo 8th, as we grew up together. She passed away over 20 years ago. I think she was teaching school out in the Uintah Basin, if my memory serves me correctly (and it may not!)

I am looking forward to this 50th Class Reunion. Thanks to the committee that is putting it together! Bravo!! Of course I will be there.....with bells on. Or is that appropriate?!!! Oh, I WILL wear something else, too! I did not stop to read if I need to send you a check soon. I will look carefully and see what I need to do. Greetings and encouragement to you all! 2007 UPDATES: I raised my family in Springville where I also worked in Nebo School District for about

30 years. When I left my husband I came back to Provo where I have lived since.

I have enjoyed travelling, have visited many of the states and have stuck my nose into Canada and Mexico. After I retired in 2000 I made several trips to Wales to do family

history research and to stand on my father's homeland. My health (or rather the lack thereof) has ended that sort of travel, so I don't go very far from home anymore. (I have suffered from Fibromyalgia for about 25 years now, and my symptoms have worsened in the last couple of years.)

I love being with my five children, four of whom are married, and my fourteen grandchildren. I also enjoy doing family history research and teaching others how to do theirs. My hobby is digital photography, especially landscape photography. Many of my photos are posted on my website.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. I plan to be at the picnic, at least.

2007 UPDATES: I went to BYU after high school and received my MRS. degree! I met my husband Paul there and waited for him to serve a 2&1/2 year mission to New Zealand. I was also the secretary at Maeser Elementary school for a year. We were married in Aug. 1961. We lived in Salt Lake City for two years where Paul attended the U

of U for his pre-dental studies. We moved to San Francisco and he attended College of Physicians and Surgeons for four years. He received his D.D.S. degree and I received my P.H.T degree. (Putting Hubby Through) We moved to Granada Hills, CA and went into Dental practice with Paul's brother for four years. We then moved to Santa Paula, CA and have lived here for 30 some odd years. Too long for me. I'm ready to move back to Utah!! We raised 7 children here. They all served missions and all graduated from BYU. Our 4 boys are Eagle Scouts. Four are married and three are single. About 12 years ago, my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. He was unable to practice general dentistry so we purchased a dental x-ray lab which proved to be a real life saver. We both worked there and retired Dec. 2005. My husband is doing well. The P.D has progressed slowly, but we aren't able to do much because of this disease. Thank goodness I am in good health and still very active in the Church, community and family. We love to travel and have been able to visit several different countries. We went to Italy June 2005. I think that will probably be our last trip like that.(Added 10/06) Actually we took our seven children and spouses on a cruise July 2006 to Alaska. It was wonderful and Paul did great. So I see more travel in our future. I'm so glad we have this site to share with each other and get to know each other better.

2007 UPDATES: Brent and I are happily married and living in Sunnyvale, California, about 45 miles south of San Francisco. We have lived here 36 years and so this is home to us. We come to Provo a few times a year to see friends and relatives and that is home too. We have five sons and one daughter and 25 grandchildren. It seems that we will not have more grandchildren, but we now have 4 Great Grandchildren and another on the

way. We loved the people there and some days we wish we were back in England. Most of the time we are happy to be home. It has been a good life and we have had a lot of wonderful friends including those from the class of 57. We have been truly blessed and have learned how much the Lord loves all of us. If any of you come to the bay area, we would love to see you.

April 2007:Our children gave us a wonderful 50th wedding anniversary party last summer. Theypicked us up in a 56 Chev. Belaire and to took us to a Sock Hop over at the church. When we arrived we saw a group of family and friends dressed in Poodle skirts and Levisand T shirts. They had a shirt for Brent and a Poodle skirt for Jeniel. We danced to music ranging from Rock Around the Clock to our love song, True Love, from High Society which we saw on our honeymoon in 1956.It has been 50 years of bliss and we now have a direct descendants numbering 52 including 6 children with spouses, 25 grandchildren with many spouses and 7 great grandchildren. We have been truly blessed! The party took us back 50 years and made us look forward to the PHS reunion comingthis summer. See you all there!

All the best, Brent and Jeniel Dickson

Salerno, Muriel [Stuart]   2007 UPDATES: We moved to Mesquite NV 9 years ago (rather than driving to Wendover 3 times a week for entertainment). Now we live in Beaver Dam AZ 10 miles away - the Boondocks!!! But - much warmer! No snow, just wind and dirt! Only grandchildren live in Georgia so I don't baby-tend!

Jan. 25 Email: Well - I have never been too interested in the computer since I worked with them for so many years doing complicated computations - reports requiring reports, etc - by working for a Gov't Sub-contractor. My son bought me these computers, he was born with an electrical/computer brain, thought everyone should want one. Well, I had Dial-Up from a company who would not upgrade you without paying for DSL. I also had only a regular monitor when I first visited your site. This meant that I was only able to view 1/2 of the pages, the words were so

huge, you lose interest trying to go side-to-side to see what is being said!

So - my son brought me a 22" LCD Monitor so I was able to view the words at one click - but it still wouldn't let me connect to any site with pictures - our "server" disconnects you after 10-15 minutes and it would take 3-4 hours to load pictures - so I was not able to get any. He paid for a one-year contract of DSL on Nov. 22. He "bugged" them until mid-January when he flew up and drove over and bugged them in person! Guess what - it only took one more week for them to put in a new line so I now have DSL! I can get "instant" service now, so I can go in and check it out whenever I find time!

As to Slide Shows - I don't know much about them. I do get them from friends here and there and watch them, but I don't think I have anything interesting in my life to make one from! But I will send a picture for the "current" listing - thanks for writing back.

I am still contemplating coming up which requires transportation and finding motels and cabs to the events - I am also going to try to get to SLC in March for a big surprise party for my sister. It is hard living so far away and having a handicapped husband - believe me, no "picnic" trying to get around in one so he has to stay home!

I saw on the Birthday List my friend Jean Clark but not her twin sister Joan Clark Beck. I also didn't find her on the deceased page, so I wonder what happened to her. Don't worry about it, I will ask Jean if she comes to the Reunion.

Symons, Margene [Johnson]   FROM 1987 BIOGRAPHY: HOBBIES: oil painting, genealogy, singing, sewing, cake decorating OCCUPATION: legal secretary for my attorney husband. I also taught school in Provo and N.Y.C. after graduation from BYU.

2007 UPDATES: After graduation from Provo High, I attended BYU for four years. I graduated in 1963 in HDFR and Elementary Education. I worked as a legal secretary in Provo during the four years I attended BYU. Upon graduation, I taught kindergarten for a year at Sunset View School in Provo.

I married Raleigh Johnson in the Logan Temple in December of 1961. We immediately went to New York City where he was in his second year of law school at Columbia University. While there, I served as a secretary to two Columbia law professors and also taught kindergarten at Teacher's College. Raleigh obtained his law degree and an MBA from Columbia in 1963 and we moved to Phoenix, Arizona while he passed the bar. We then moved to Holbrook, Arizona and resided there for 19 years where he practiced law. All 6 of our children were born in that area.

In 1982 we moved to Monett, Missiouri where we resided for 14 years. While there, I acted as legal secretary to my husband and later became the owner and manager of a corn husk doll business that employed 45 women and had a clientel of over 300 businesses throughout the country. In 1996 the family moved to Mesa, Arizona where I lived for 3 years. At this point, my marriage of 38 years ended in divorce and I moved back to Provo and into the home that I was raised in while attending Provo High and BYU. I am probably the only graduate that is living in the same house lived in while attending Provo High. I was blessed to find a wonderful job at the MTC almost 6 years ago and continue to love my work here. (On Wednesdays, I have the privilege of working with Dolan and Shirley Condie at the MTC) I am presently serving as Relief Society President in the Oak Hills 7th Ward. In the past I have served as President and Counselor in all 3 organizations on a ward level and have also been in Presidencies of all three organizations on a stake level. Five of my six children are married and I have 17 grand children, whom I love dearly. Four of my children served missions and my youngest (unmarried) son, is presently doing Humanitarian work as a Fulbrite scholar in Thailand. It is good to be back home and I look forward to the upcoming reunion,.... although it can't possibly be the 50th......are you sure you counted correctly!!!???
