The Parent Association of P.s. 175Q, the Lynn gross
Discovery school would like to welcome our returning parents and the new parents to the school. this academic year is going to be an ex-citing and fun one for our children. We couldn’t be more excited to be part of the great programs featured for the students this year. the PA supports innovative and educational programs for all our children. this year, we are funding the guggenheim Museum for a 20 week residency program for 4th grade, the Marquis studio residen-cy for 1st and 3rd grades. We also are paying for part of the 5th grade graduation activities, such as their year-end picnic and luxury busses for their Broadway trip. Not forget-ting our littlest academics, we also finance the Pre-K and Kindergarten graduation activities as well. In addi-tion, the PA recognizes the dedicat-ed and hard-working teachers of P.s. 175Q and support them with a $100 stipend for each classroom. We also supplement the tAg (talented And gifted) program
with Constitution Works. this year, the PA was proud to announce the introduction of our new after-school program — thinkingCap. this program is a mixture of education and fun with a choice of homework help and sev-eral activities: Discovery Kids; Move It, Move It; Cartooning; Drama; Dance; reading Bear; Crazy Cool Art; sports; and Debate. In addition, thinkingCap offers supplemental enrichment Classes: engineering through Lego, Creative Writing, Chess and Decoding Math Problems. As with any new program, there had been some “growing pains” in the early implementation. But we are happy with the progress already made and look forward to continued success. of course, we have left the best
for last. so now let’s get down to the fun stuff and talk about our Leg-endary halloween Party! this year, prepare to have the time of your life with dancing, food, raffles, games, and prizes… and of course, our annual show! the halloween party is the largest fundraiser we have for the year, but we plan on having many more during the school year. Be on the look-out for bake sales, international food fest and movie night — a kid favorite. All this cannot be done without you, the P.s. 175Q family. our family get togethers happen once a month, usually on the second tuesday of the month. Please join us for our next meeting on November 10, 2015 at 7:00 PM, in the school cafeteria. As always, there will be refreshments and childcare on site. remember the PA are parents, just like you. get involved and let’s make this year a fun and educational one for our children.
Sincerely,Elena Aminova and Nancy BaxterCo-Presidents, PA Board of P.S. 175Q
Congratulations to Gulnora A. of K-123,
raffle winner of 2 Halloween Tickets during last month’s PA meeting!

GO STUDENT COUNCIL GO!
Student Council is a representative structure for all the students in the school. It provides students with the opportunity to become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents. It always works for the benefit of the school and the stu-dents. The student council helps share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. They often also help raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events and community projects. For example food drives fundraisers and parties.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to a new year at the Lynn gross Dis-
covery school for 2015-2016! I hope you enjoyed the summer off and are looking forward to a great school year. there is no better sound than the sound of our children’s laughter and chatter. GoALS our mission at P.s. 175Q is to be a respectful, successful, and safe community of high-achieving learn-ers. We want all students to make academic and social gains at their own learning level. We also want all parents to know that we are here to partner with you serving your children and the families in the community. our school community strives to instill in each child the excitement that comes with learning. the bar is high and academics are aligned to the Common Core Learning stan-dards. the goal of our staff is to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of each child. At P.s. 175Q, teachers work incredibly hard to offer differentiated instruction and opportunities for our students. We will continue to use the readygen and goMath curriculum this year in addition to Core Knowledge phonics program for grades K-2. It is a chal-lenging and thorough program that encourages students to learn math and reading with deeper understand-ing. Along with academic excellence,
our staff is also committed to social and emotional needs of our students. the “stars expectation, No Place for hate, respect for All” is our character program that consists of three key characteristics that will be stressed throughout the year. the characteristics are respect, respon-sibility and honesty. this year we will be working with students to provide leadership opportunities within our school and putting what we learn into action. ImPoRTAnT InFoRmATIon School Hours: school begins at 8:00 a.m. and is dismissed at 2:20 p.m. for grades Pre-K-5. Breakfast is served everyday in the cafeteria beginning at 7:35 a.m. students need to be in school on time in order to begin their day with a sense of confi-dence and assurance. Emergency cards can be updated in person only. for security reasons, office staff will not be allowed to add, drop or change anything on the emergency cards without checking ID from the parent or guardian who is changing the information. We want to make sure your children are safe. Change of Plans: I know there are situations that arise occasion-ally during the day that cannot be helped. Please be aware that we need a note for any change of plans for dismissal at the end of the day. If there is no note, your child will go with their usual plan. Please call the
school office if you have last minute changes. the call needs to be made by 1:30 p.m. to ensure that your child and the teacher receive the message. A consistent routine for your child is extremely helpful to all concerned. thank you in advance for your help with this! uPComInG PAREnT TEACHER ConFEREnCES – dATE To REmEmbER – THuRSdAy, novEmbER 5, 2015 At home, I urge you to be active in your child’s education. encourage them to read outside of the scope of what is required of him/her by the school. In New York state, we con-tinue to develop our skills under the Common Core Learning standards. the amount and rigor of outside reading will greatly contribute to your child’s success not only in school but in the world outside of the class-room as well. It takes a village to raise a child. Parents, teachers, support staff, com-munity and administration all play a part in helping our students meet and exceed our expectations of them. Please feel free to stop at my office to say hello, as my door is always open! I wish your family, and especially your student, great suc-cess during this new school year.
sincerely, Milagros DuenoAssistant Principal

Pre-kinderGarten Pre-kindergarten is off to a won-derful start. We are learning many things everyday. We enjoy stories, singing, center time and eating breakfast, lunch and snack. We are becoming accustomed to morning arrival and routines. We are happy to come to school and look forward to seeing our friends. Pre-K teachers are so proud of how we’ve already come and look forward to an exciting year. The Pre-K Teachers:

kinderGartenWhat a successful start to Kinder-garten! the children transitioned very well into a new school with new teachers. they are learning the routines and adjusting well to classroom rules. We are so proud of the Kindergarten children and the smooth transition they have made. the Kindergarten students are really fALLing into recognizing
sounds and letters. It’s so nice to watch them learn and develop. We are learning how to blend words. Blending words will help your child become a better reader and writer. they are also learning how to rec-ognize character and settings in a story. It’s nice to watch them create their own stories including character and setting with much detail. Contin-ue reviewing these concepts when you read with your child at home. 1st Gradethe first grade is off to a wonderful school year. We have been very busy in our classrooms reading and writing on a variety of subjects, including “All About Me” and what it means to be a responsible “Class-room Citizen” and communities. We have been exploring the fall season through our reading, writing and art activities. We are also working on number operations, using addi-tion and subtraction concepts. We are also learning about living and non-living things. We are looking forward to our upcoming trips this year. our first trip will be on october 26th to the green Meadow farm and pumpkin
picking, followed by our second trip on December 17th to see the Pa-perbag Players. Parents, please be on the look-out for announcements regarding these trips. We also wel-come parent chaperones. so please join us and your children for fun, educational trips. enjoy this beautiful season of fall. take your children apple and pumpkin picking, visit the science Museum in Queens, and all the other great cultural institutions New York has to offer. Parents, please read with your children every day, asking questions about the stories. enjoy this special time with your children. The First Grade Teachers: Ms. Collin, Ms. Curiale, Ms. Olson, Ms. Piansky, Ms. Shimunov
2nd GradeWe welcome you back to an excit-ing new school year! there are so many plans ahead to supplement the scope and sequence of the curricu-lum and encourage parent engage-ment to provide the children with a learning environment for maximum personal-social and academic de-velopment. to start with, we recently sent you a letter notifying you of changes to our grading system for the math tests. the math materi-als have changed and we wanted a grading system to help better identify the children’s weaknesses and strengths in this subject area. this allows us to modify our les-
sons and address students’ needs. In addition to this change, we plan to infuse the curriculum with Project Base Activities to support chapter units in social studies and science. this means that your child may be asked to bring specific items for in-class projects or may have to complete some projects at home. these hands-on activities are meant to strengthen your child’s under-standing of various topics covered in the content areas. And, at present, we are continu-ing with our testing and evaluating levels in reading and math with our i-ready assessments. Already we are using earlier tests to set goals to address each student’s academic needs. We will also focus on the writ-ing process in fiction and nonfiction using thinking Maps. the purpose of using thinking Maps is to help children to think critically across all subject areas. students will create thinking Maps to make better cur-riculum connection across content areas and develop deeper knowl-edge and understanding of concepts in geography and earth science topics such as erosion, weathering, earthquakes, and volcanoes. We plan to keep you informed of future developments with parent engage-ment activities/events to help you understand the curriculum require-ments better. As for other extra-curriculum activities, several trips are scheduled

During the athletic events students demonstrated competitiveness, sportsmanship and respect for the other competitors. so many parents were in attendance and cheering, it felt like the actual olympic games. After the athletic events the entire school ate and cele-brated together at the school barbecue cour-tesy of the principal, it was a beautiful day.PEn and InK: What are the challenging aspects
of your job?mr. davis: Is the lack of time I have with the students. I see each class either once or twice a week for only 45 minutes. Ideally I would like to see each class 3x a week for 60 minutes.PEn and InK: What is your favorite:mr. davis: sport: football mr. davis: fruit: grapefruit. I eat one every morning.mr. davis: color: Bluemr. davis: ice-cream fl avor: Cookie DoughPEn and InK: If you get a chance to go any-where in the world and do whatever you would like, where and what would it be?mr. davis: I love to travel and have been many places, but if can go anywhere I would choose switzerland. It is the third healthiest country in the world, and teaching is a highly prized profession in that country. Wherever I go I can always see myself as some sort of teacher/coach and advocate for fi tness, health and education.

you had a result and wonderful sum-mer vacation. All students in grades K-5 are currently taking the iready reading and Math assessments. results will be given to parents in the November report cards. once all assessments are completed, each student should set a goal of doing one hour of reading lessons and one hour of math lessons per-week. the local libraries have computer for you to use, if you do not have students in grades 3-5 are reminded to bring their mate-rials to class each week. these materials consist of: ear-buds, folder and flash drive. thank you and we look forward to working with your child this year.Ms. Feldman, Ms. Pongratz
LiBrarY As the library undergoes construc-tion, I will be working hard with the students to build their literacy skills. from read aloud to thinking maps the children will become confident readers and writers. Please look over the reading tips below which I have taken from www.k12reader.com. I look forward to working with each class this year!Ms. C. Viola
LAy A STRonG FoundATIon FoR REAdInG SuCCESShelping your child develop good reading comprehension skills involves planning. In other words,
you need to give your children the tools they need to apply to what-ever kind of book you’re reading together. Before reading a book about ocean life, for example, first talk to your child about how fish are different from mammals and have to live in a water environment. Preview the text to find unfamil-iar words like “gills” and “verte-brate” and explain them before you start reading. talk about the fish you may have seen in a pet store or at the beach. You can even go the extra mile and take your child to the local aquarium!
moRE REAdInG TImE And LESS Tv TImEstudies show that children are ex-posed to a larger variety of words in children’s books that are read to them than from what they hear on prime time tV. that means anything you read to them will enlarge their vocabulary much more than the words heard on television. remember that your child’s listening vocabulary is much larg-er than her reading vocabulary. When you read books that are interesting to her, both reading and writing vocabularies increase. that’s because if she has heard a word before in context, then when it’s presented in the class-room she’ll be able to recognize it with greater comprehension.

REAdInG ALoud And THInKInG ALoudgood readers unconsciously create visual images in their heads while they are reading. It’s all part of the comprehension process. While you are reading to your child, think out loud about the images you see or the questions that may arise. that means explain-ing the ideas, pictures, questions, and connections that go through your mind as you read a passage.
LET youR CHILd bE THE TEACHER
Most all children jump at the opportunity to play a little role reversal. As you and your child are reading, take turns coming up with questions, making predictions, and summarizing. You be the student and let your son or daughter be the teacher. Children love being able to say things like “Dad, tell me what you think will happen next!”

sCienCeAs the academic year begins, we have focused on thinking, observing and communicating like scientists. We agreed that we are all scien-tists as we learn about the world around us, and to fi nd solutions to problems our community faces. fifth grade students have focused on learning to communicate ideas and instructions with clarity. fourth grade students focused on making spin-a-copters and fi nding ways to modify the design to improve performance. third grade students began by using four out of fi ve senses to identify mystery objects. Kindergarten students learned what science is and how we use our fi ve senses to understand the world around us. We learned that communicating our thoughts and ideas with clarity is more diffi cult than we thought it would be. We will apply our skills
of thinking, observing and commu-nicating like scientists to our future studies. Moving forward we will create a model of an ecosystem in fi fth grade. fourth grade students are learning about plant and animal adaptations. In the third grade, our focus is on Matter. our little ones in Kindergarten are learn-ing the difference between living and non-living things. We look forward to sharing our work with you during open school week and parent-teacher conferences.Ms. Green
