The following is an extract from ‘In The Breaking Of The Bread’ by J. Lee Magness.
And Eat With You
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
(Revelations 3: 20)
Jesus spoke those words, those red-letter words. He is the “I”, standing at the door, and more than standing—knocking on the door, and more than knocking—calling through the broad boards of the door. He is the one standing there sad-eyed and thorny-crowned, knocking with raw knuckles cupping a pierced palm, calling as if from the broad beams of the cross, except for the fact that he is standing, standing at the door, knocking.
But on whose door does he knock? To whom does he speak? Not to the lost, but to the found. Not to the loyal, but to the lukewarm, the well-clothed-but-naked, eagle-eyed-but-blind, prosperous-but-pitiful, neither-hot! hot! hot!-nor-chilly-cold, spit-you-out Christians od Laodicea.
And what does he want with them, the lukewarm-like-us Laodicean Christians? What does he want with us? Not just to hear his knock-knock-knocking, not just to open the barred boards of the door, not even just to come in and stand there in awkward, don’t-I-remember-you-from-somewhere? silence. He comes to eat with us, to eat with us and us with him.
There words from the book of Revelation are not about the need for conversation; they are about the need for Communion.
They are not about finding Christ for the first time; they are about being found by Christ again and again.
They are not so much about salvation-time as about supper-time, supper-time-with-Jesus time, Lord’s-Supper time.
Listen! In the stillness of this moment, listen! He is standing at the door, right now, knocking; and if we can hear his voice and tear open the door as we tear that of morsel from the loaf, he will come in to us and eat this meal with us, and us with him.
God, help us to make this meal the open-door police of our lives, through Christ. Amen.
