CommentThe Scotch 3rds played their best game of the season against a depleted Guildford side. The teams were reduced to 16 a side due to Guildford struggling to have numbers, which made for some wide open spaces and exciting football. It was really pleasing to see Scotch maintain discipline throughout the entire match with their willingness to run and tackle the whole game. It was also great to see the boys sharing the ball around and kick to position, rather than taking the opportunity to be selfish in possession. Boys were happy to be rotated and backs were given some much cherished time up forward during the second half. The boys won by over 100 points.Scotch kicked with the assistance of a very strong breeze in the first quarter and they made a great start. The midfield won plenty of the ball and the forwards capitilised with five goals for the term. Mitchell Lane and Reece Eades were very dangerous around the goals and Nick Ryan provided a good target at full forward. The second quarter was a battle working into the breeze. Scotch played very well in the opening minutes and dominated the play. Unfortunately the side was unable to control the tempo at which they were moving the ball and this created some easy counter attacks for Guildford. The final five minutes of the quarter were spend defending the Guildford goal and to every players credit they kept Guildford goalless for the term. The second half was a continual battle in difficult conditions. Guildford outscored Scotch one goal to nil, with Scotch running out 31 point winners.

Guildford provided the venue for the Round 11 clash in pouring rain. For this reason Scotch players were issued the focus to effectively control the game through a non-negotiable attack on the ball and player allowing them to dictate time in possession with the football. The decisions made by each players highlighted their mature understanding and ability to make the right decision during each minute of the game regardless of the skill execution that follows. The player’s continual development of each skill (whether the skill be whilst in possession of the football or whilst regaining that football back from the opposition) coupled with the ability to maximize their role within the team proved valuable against a Guildford team who possessed larger bodies in positions around the ground resulting in a win.

‘How are you developing as a player’ each session and each week in a program that has 2 games remaining drives the group both individually and collectively to continually improve, develop skills and decisions that will influence their football now and in the every challenge they are confronted with.

CommentComing back from the holidays the boys’ skills were slightly rusty, and took some time to get their intensity up to the standard that it had been at before the break. This proved costly, allowing a sharper Christchurch side to get goals on the board early, and press their advantage home for the rest of the game. However, the final scoreline of 4-2 to CCGS does not reflect the second half comeback that the Scotch boys showed, having many shots on goal that were unlucky not to go in. Tom Miller was dominant as always in the centre, and Ben Anderson kept us in the game for much of the match with some fantastic saves in goal.

After clinching a nailbiting 2-1 win over Christchurch in the last game before the break started, both Scotch and CCGS were eager for a rematch in the first round back from the holidays. Unfortunately the weather was not quite as eager, and heavy rain and winds made this game a tough one for both sides, with ball pace greatly reduced by the sodden pitch and tackles becoming more and more desperate as the game progressed. After a scrappy first half by both teams, the floodgates opened for CCGS, who then dominated possession, and finished up with 5 unanswered goals. Well lead as always by Ridge Mannikko, who then showed huge dedication to fill in for the 10B’s in the following game.

This was always going to be a difficult game and then the weather arrived to make it even more challenging! We played very well in the first half, very direct hockey. Despite continuous circle penetrations we only had one on the board by half time and then Guildford scored early on in the second period. At 1 -1 we could have been in trouble but we kept our structure and eventually got a good open play goal. Two late goals made the result look comfortable but it was not that easy. Well done to the team for keeping focussed and simple in the completion of the game.

Scotch 8A continued their roaring success on the rugby pitch with a win against Guildford 62-0 on Gardiner Oval. A howling north-westerly wind helped the team secure a 41-0 half-time lead with tries from Lachie Phillips, Sean Szalek and skipper Connor O’Sullivan. On his birthday, prop Sam Pierce was in no mood to surrender and made rampaging breaks when unleashed onto the paddock. Ben Skelton, on his return from injury, played like a man possessed with blistering pace and scored a fine 70 metre try. Zac Cheir made his 8A debut and his strong performance will give coaches Robinson and Fowler a selection headache for the Trinity outing. Despite some pivotal moves, there were occasions when a final pass would have proved the better option. In the second half, a 13 man Guildford were given two Scotch players as a sporting gesture (Lachie/Jock Thomson and Fletcher Houston) to make up the numbers. Since the Hale fixture the boys have not been challenged although we hope that Trinity prove otherwise. A promising start to the term, but this is not a time for complacency. With a determined effort for the final 2 weeks, there is every chance that 8A will travel another year unbeaten.

CommentAfter our first round loss to Guildford, it was very pleasing that this time around we were able to convert our domination into points and score five tries to their nil. In the first half the Scotch team displayed their skills in running straight and offloading which are two areas that we’ve worked on at recent training sessions. The team was supporting their runners well and it was pleasing to see Calum Dow cross over for a well-deserved try. In the second half Charlie Benson’s boot kept us in our attacking half and we were able to cross the line four times. Harry Ayers did a fine job in delivering clean ball to our backline and Hayden Donnelly was aggressive all over the field.

Another tough game against a very well organized and structured side. We got off to a good start and made a lot of first up tackles and committing players to the ruck forcing a number of turn-overs early on. As fatigue started to build though the sustained pressure from Guilford’s forwards started to tell, and with more ball being retained at the breakdown they were to start to move the ball more, further tiring our forwards and leaving backs exposed to covering larger spaces and hang to contest the breakdown with little support. Unfortunately a couple of very soft tries made the score look less competitive than the game really was. The highlight being a Scotch try at the death.

On a bleak afternoon we traveled to Guildford for the return fixture of 2014.As tough and unforgiving as any match of the year, but played in a great spirit with neither team giving an inch. Both sides where evenly matched and the game flowed from end to end. With no team able to get away it came down to a missed tackle here and so individual skill there to break it open. An unfortunate 5 minute lapse in concentration saw Guildford take the lead and whilst Scotch surged late it was just too much. A huge effort and compliment from both sides supporters said a great deal about the fixture.

Well done boys.

The Scotch team had a solid victory against Guildford on Saturday. Scotch started strongly and were soon into their pattern. James Warne and Isaac Bombara running the ball up strongly. After numerous phases Will Cusack crashed over to open the scoring. Scotch soon took command up front and Lau Penaia ran in an impressive solo effort. Scotch continued to press as Nick Gale (2) Mikey Cureton and Abe Potter crashed over for Scotch to lead 32 - 0 at half time.

Guildford were short on numbers as Scotch wrung the changes and helped them out. Josh Thomas continued his emergence as a good lock forward with some strong running and Harry Jones continues to play with aggression and commitment and was rewarded with a try. The Scotch team kept to their pattern and the second half belonged to Khysom Umbagai who scored a hat trick of tries with illusive running as Nick Gale rounded off a personal hat trick, 2 tries for Scotch and 1 for Guilldford.

CommentThe Scotch-Aquinas-Hale Barbarians came back from the term break eager to put in a good performance and they delivered on all fronts. Con-ditions were unfavourable as it was raining for the majority of the match, and subsequently the boys had to adjust as the expansive attacking game we had planned was not suited for these conditions. A narrower “up the guts” style was required, the boys rolling up their sleeves and getting into it with absolute dedication for one another. This was indicative by the scoreline, which highlighted the fact the Barbarians line was not breached once. A huge effort by the boys, even more so as they were previously thumped by the same Wesley outfit last term by more than 60 points! What a turn around. Keep up the effort gents.boys soon.

CommentA comprehensive 5-1 victory against a strong GG side. Goals to Aidan Davies (2), Kalle Palmer (2) and a cracking strike from 30 yards from James Mackinnon ensured Scotch took full points.

At the 5th time of asking this year, the Scotch 10C’s finally beat Wesley in an entertaining 3-0 victory for the away side. Coming into the game, the boys were desperate to beat Wesley who have had the upper hand over us so far this season, and they did it well in a 3-0 victory. The boys came out firing from the first whistle, and with inclusions coming down from the B’s to assist us with numbers, as well as the regular group, the boys put together their best performance of the season. Every Scotch boy played unbelievably well so it is hard to single anyone out, but Jamey was outstanding in Midfield, as was Eddie, Flynn and Charlie in defence. Lewis came down to help us out with numbers and did well to open the scoring, firing nicely into the bottom corner, before a second was added just before halftime. Wesley started the second half well, but were unable to get a goal, with Scotch holding very firm in defence. The desire by our boys to attack the contest and hold the lead was commendable, and with only one minute to go, Tristan, another inclusion who came down from the B’s dribbled into the Wesley box, beating three players before tapping the ball into the bottom right corner. The boys were thrilled to finally beat Wesley, and hopefully we can finish the season strongly.

The windy conditions were initially a concern, however the boys did not seem to be hampered by the elements. Their tenacity and desire to attack the ball proved to be too overwhelming for Guildford as most of the play was in our attacking zone. Mitch Anstiss moved up from fullback to attack and he had a significant influence on the result.

Taj Sadler put in a solid performance against Guildford. His willingness to press forward and become an option resulted with him putting the ball into the back of the net. Jack Adams consistently puts in a strong effort in defense. Jack’s ability to drive the ball forward and send it into attack enables us to be a very competitive team.

Our away game against Guildford was very exciting with the Guildford boys attacking hard from the first whistle. During the first 15 minutes, the Scotch boys’ passing game was not working. The defenders were not linking well enough with midfielders. However, things started to get better and soon Stefan scored after receiving a great ball from midfield. James Taylor who was very dominant in midfield scored the second goal and soon after Stefan Safar scored again. Tom, who was making things very difficult for the Guilford defenders, scored just before the break to make the half time score; Scotch 4 Guildford 0. The Guildford boys started the second half with a greater desire to win. They were stronger in midfield and we started to see linkup play between their midfielders and forwards. However, the Scotch defenders were very strong and organised. The Guildford forwards just could not get through them. About 10 minutes in the second Raghav Khanna scored from a header after receiving a great cross. Suddenly, the ball was almost entirely being played in the Guildford half of the pitch. Raghav soon scored another goal. Stefan scored again 5 minutes before the end of the match to make the final result 7-1 for Scotch. The 9B Scotch boys remain undefeated after eight games.

In wet and windy conditions Scotch dusted off the holiday cobwebs and played an impressive brand of Soccer. After falling behind by a fortunate goal early in the first half, Scotch began to dominate possession and win every loose ball. They were rewarded with an equalising goal by Coen Miller late in the game which surely rates as one of the goals of the season. The match ended 1-1.

Playing with a very strong wind behind us in the 1st half, we felt we had to get to half-time with a healthy lead to give us something to defend in the 2nd half. With almost their 1st attack, Guildford scored to take a 1-0 lead. This seemed to galvanise the Scotch boys who produced wave after wave of attack & we rewarded when Josh Fisher headed home the equaliser from a corner. More chances came & went & just when it looked as though GG would reach half-time level, Nick Price ran on to a through ball & slotted home a fine finish to give Scotch a 2-1 lead. The wind was still strong as the 2nd half began, but Scotch produced a resilient team performance as GG couldn’t get close enough to our goal to threaten & any long balls they played over the top were gathered by the ever alert Josh Dyson in our goal. To top off a fantastic team performance, Peter scored a superb individual goal to give the Scotch boys a 3-1 win. Well done to all the squad on a fine performance.

On a horrible, wet, blustery day at Guildford Grammar, Scotch fought out a 2-1 win. Despite dominating the 1st half, it took a 30 yard wonder goal from Carlin Feely to give Scotch a deserved 1-0 half-time lead. In such poor weather conditions, on a tight pitch, a slender 1-0 lead was keeping everyone nervous & when a defence lapse allowed GG to score from their 1st shot on goal 10 minutes into the 2nd half, you almost felt you could have written the script. Scotch stayed on the offensive, but poor finishing, poor delivery of free kick opportunities & lady luck being on the side of Guildford meant that we struggled to get that 2nd goal. Eventually, our perseverance was rewarded when Carlin Feely scored his 2nd goal of the game & so it proved to be the winner.
