Specialized Training Programs for Member Associations

PSFU aims at ensuring that the capacity of our members is strengthened. In order to do so we have therefore come up with tailored training programs in association governance, resource mobilization and membership development. These programs are organized on a bi-monthly basis and are offered to members free of charge at PSFU premises. Tailored programs can also be organized and offered to members at subsidized rates.

Mentorship and Coaching Support

PSFU provides an opportunity for sharing and exchange of knowledge, we do know that there’s a lot we can all learn from each other. We therefore provide an opportunity for young members to learn from those that have vast experience or those that have outstanding performance in some areas of interest. This is done through our mentorship program where members are exposed to leaders from various associations (mentees) for a period of at least three months. We also offer an opportunity of apprenticeship for the staff working in the various associations with a priority to young associations to be placed at PSFU for a period of at least three months. Induction of New Boards

We ensure that all our members understand the mandate of PSFU and also participate in the activities of PSFU. It’s therefore our policy that every new Board of every Association is inducted about PSFU services and how they can contribute towards enhancing the mission

of the organization .The Membership department regularly organizes the induction for all new members and also new office holders that have not been exposed to the operations of PSFU.

Technical Support and Advice in Conducting Association Governance Affairs and General Elections

PSFU knows that managing affairs of member based organization is sometimes complex or might require an extra hand. This is the main reason why PSFU has been entrusted by a number of our member associations to offer technical support and advice in preparing, conducting and presiding over general elections. This service is offered to members upon request.

Annual Member Needs Assessment

We aim to continuously serve you better that’s why we give our members a chance to participate in our annual member needs assessment survey. This acts as a yard stick for PSFU to design new programs and activities that can enhance member participation but also development of our wider membership. The online membership needs survey is open to all members and a representative sample is selected for one on one visits and interviews. Copies of our annual needs assessments are available to all stakeholders on our website or in the PSFU resource center on request.

Hand over of certificates to bicycle entrepreneurs/repairers during the launch of the project in Nambieso, Apac district.

PSFU is engaged in a number of activities that enhance social and community development. Over the years we have been actively involved in issues related to HIV/AIDS, Gender mainstreaming and women empowerment and youth support. We have also recently launched a Private Sector Health Common Fund. Below are some of the activities that we are currently involved in;

i) Improvement of Children Well being. The Bernard Van Leer Foundation (BVLF) District project became effective from the 1st February 2012 and is expected to run up to January 30th 2013 as a pilot subject to extension for another two years subject to satisfactory performance. The Project targets three Districts i.e. Apac, Nakapiripirit and Kumi two sub counties in each of the three Districts. Implementation of activities is undertaken by District staff at headquarter and sub county level with overall supervision of the District Health

Officer (DHO). The accounting role on behalf of the District is lying in the hands of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). PSFU also has a coordinating office based in Kumi District Head Quarters at the DHOs Office.

The project activities will cover the following broad areas. 1. Reduced childhood mortality and morbidity among young rural children growing up in unhealthy physical environments

2. Reduced violence in families with young children in rural areas 3. Young children (0-6 years) in rural areas spend their days in safe and stimulating environments near their homes

The BVLF project has supported the formation of 144 VSLA groups covering over 5000 households in the three districts. And also works with other 300 VHTs who have all been facilitated with a bicycle. The program will also give the various cluster groups seeds, oxen and ox ploughs to increase food security in households. In a bid to increase access to water and improved sanitation, the project will support extension of water and digging of bore holes which will be facilitated through the water user committees.

F ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES THAT LEAD TO INCREASED SOCIAL BENEFITS TO COMMUNITIES

ii) CSR Annual Award

PSFU in partnership with Bernard Van Leer Foundation recognizes the need to advocate and integrate young children program in private sector activities in Uganda. It is noted that 98% of children in Uganda live in rural areas and approximately 38% of them under five years are stunted. Uganda also still experiences the challenge of high infant and child mortality. In addition there are a number challenges facing the lives of young children which include environmental health, disease burden, poor personal hygiene and inadequate sanitation.

The Private sector in Uganda mainly corporate bodies have been involved in various initiatives both at national, regional and local level through corporate social responsibility/shared value programs aimed at increasing and improving access to water, promoting and offering cheap and affordable housing, provision and promotion of community toilet facilities, distribution of treated mosquito nets, promotion of sanitation programs among others.

There is therefore a need to create deliberate efforts to recognizing corporate companies/private companies that are involved in such programs aimed at Creating Shared Value. PSFU in partnership with BVLF therefore started an Annual CSR Award for Investment in activities that enhance the well being of young Children.

The main objectives of this ward include;• To promote more private sector participation and involvement in initiatives that lead to a healthy physical environment for young rural children • To increase funding and participation

from government and development partners for activities that reduce child mortality and morbidity.• To raise awareness among the private and public sector about family and young child violence• To increase awareness of the early learning needs and rights of young children among the private and public sector.

The award criterion puts into consideration the following for eligibility purposes: • Must be a profit making company, • Must have contributed funds or in

kind to a project focused on reducing childhood mortality and morbidity, reducing violence in families with young children, and promoting early learning.

iii) CSR Activities and Trainings

PSFU has developed specialized CSR training programs targeting corporate managers and officers involved in supporting initiatives in communities such that they are equipped with skills to be able to make a decision in supporting projects that create high impacts in communities. PSFU through the membership department will organize a series

of sports activities, cultural and education fairs to ensure that we engage the private sector on critical issues that affect our communities. For example PSFU organized a Golf Tournament in July 2012 to raise funds for the Private Sector Health Common Fund to support initiatives that reduce child mortality and morbidity.

iv) Private Sector Health Common Fund

This year 2012, PSFU in partnership with JHU-CCP and the Ministry of Health launched the Private Sector Health Common Fund (PSHCF). This new initiative is aimed at supporting the health sector in addressing maternal and child health, which is responsible for high mortality and morbidity in Uganda. The purpose of this PSHCF is to address critical health care needs that affect the less fortunate and vulnerable groups (children under 5 years and women of reproductive age) in Uganda. Among the critical health care needs identified including Malaria, Nutrition and Safe water hygiene and sanitation.

PSHCF is being created to support and compliment the Ministry Of Health Uganda objectives as outlined in the Health Sector Strategic Plan with emphasis of Children under 5 years of age and other vulnerable groups (women). The primary goal of PSHCF is to encourage private sector participation in the national response to issues of health with regards to Children and Women with a focus on underserved areas. We do encourage corporate companies and various development partners to contribute towards this fund.
