Learning Outcomes
1. I can explain what is meant by resilience
2. I understand the role of resilience in success
3. I understand what we mean by failure
4. I can reframe and learn from failure
Refresher
Think back to your task from last week.
What do we mean by emotional wellbeing?
Who can share some of the things they did this week that they think helped their wellbeing?

Defining Resilience
In small groups, consider these points:
the ways in which Kayla was resilient
how Kayla responded to being told she couldn’t do something (ie having MS would usually mean people couldn’t or wouldn’t do sport)
why you think she responded as she did?
what lessons we can all learn from Kayla’s story?
Can you think of any other examples of where someone has shown remarkable resilience?
Reframing Failure
Click image above to watch the video.
Why does he say ‘I’ve failed over and over again in my life – this is why I succeed’? What does he mean by this?
Reframing Failure
Read the handout
How did Kayla reframe failure? For each of the five ways of reframing failure: could this be applied to Kayla’s story and if so, how?
1. Stop judging2. Focus on why3. Get comfortable being
uncomfortable4. It’s a marathon not a sprint5. Acknowledge progress
Now consider Bill, Belle and Bailey in the second part of your handout.
• How could they reframe failure?• What would a parent or teacher say to them?

Watch how Kayla’s story ends
• How does Kayla respond to falling in a race?
• How could these lessons be applied to an everyday scenario like failing a maths test?
Extension/Homework
Find an example of a person who has failed to achieve what they wanted to (don’t choose anyone you or the class might know; think about athletes, musicians, academics, etc..)
Write them an email (no more than 300 words) explaining how they could reframe their failure and how their experience might make them more likely to succeed in the future.
